Holy Family Parish This week we will conclude the article on Love and Faith by Chris Stefanick that we began two weeks ago. The beginning of the article was on the messaging problem we face regarding marriage. The conclusion looks into the solution. For more information, check out Chris at www.reallifecatholic.com I think our Pope has made it his central mission is to address this messaging problem. That s why, in his recent interview with America magazine, he said, We (as a Church) cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods...when we speak about these issues, we have to talk about them in a context. So what s the context of which he speaks? In a word: Love. God IS Love. The Good News of the Gospel is that Love created us to be one with him forever. When we wandered from Love, he sought us out through the prophets. When we still rejected him, he became one of us and laid down his body and his life to win us back. The bible is a love story! When we fail to grasp the context of love, there s nothing more unattractive than things like marriage...and Christianity. They make all the demands of love and offer none of the rewards. That s why John Paul II said that Religion itself, without the experience of the wondrous discovery of the Son of God and communion with him who became our brother, becomes a mere set of principles which are increasingly difficult to understand, and rules which are increasingly hard to accept. And Pope Benedict XVI said that the Church can t become identified with certain commandments or prohibitions. That s because if Christianity is only identified with these issues, we give the impression that we are moralists with a few somewhat antiquated convictions, and not even a hint of the true greatness of the faith appears." You see, despite the crazy headlines from secular news agencies about Pope Francis interview marking a radical departure from Church teaching, or a 180 degree shift from the pastoral approach of his predecessors, his message is nothing new. But then again, John Paul II and Benedict XVI weren t making up something new either. They were re-iterating the Gospel. (cont. on next column) (cont. from 1st column) Of course, the message of the Gospel isn t that moral guidelines, truths of the Faith, and the Church s sacraments and rituals are irrelevant. They re as important with faith as they are with marriage! No one would get married and say to his bride, In my heart of hearts I really love you, and you really love me, so can I cheat on you? The idea is absurd. Inherent in the question Will you marry me? is the question Will you renounce all others? That s why when Jesus announced the Kingdom he said repent and believe in the Gospel with the same sacred breath. It s not because he is a rule giving monster whose mission was to ruin your life and take away your fun. It s because he s love offering you his life, and asking for your hand. That s the context that the Gospel message frames our Catholic Faith. And it s a beautiful thing. REMINDER...If you use a cell phone for your main phone would you please let us know what your cell phone number is. Thank you. In addition, each has read a novel with their respective class. After completing a textbook unit, the classes will each begin another novel. We travel to many countries and meet many characters! There are life lessons to learn, geography to review, and vocabulary to master. The seventh grade students studied the history of Halloween. Discovering the meaning and origin of costumes and traditions from other countries proved to be enlightening. The Student Council hosts the middle school party each year. Their advisor was not able to be at school Wednesday or Thursday, and yet the Student Council decorated and organized the food and games. The leadership skills of some were very impressive. We are enjoying fall, however, we are preparing for chilly recesses! Mrs. Luanne Atkins Thank you to all who have donated to the Diocesan Annual Appeal. We will be listing the names of all who responded. We will be listing the following names for a few weeks and then another 50 or so.
