I AM THE VINE, YOU ARE THE BRANCHES. Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Happy 5th Sunday of Easter! Last weekend we heard from the 10 th chapter of John s Gospel and meditated on the story of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. This weekend we move onto the 15 th chapter of John s Gospel and contemplate the analogy of Jesus as the vine and we as His branches. In Today s Gospel Jesus states, Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit because without me you can do nothing. At our Vigil and Sunday Masses, I ll read for you Bishop Zubik s letter announcing the new clergy team that will be assigned to our parish beginning on Monday, October 15 th, 2018. This clergy team will consist of one administrator who will be the sole administrator of each of the 5 parishes in our new parish grouping. Our new parish grouping will most likely consist of the 5 parishes of St. Paul, St. Peter, St. Michael, St. Fidelis, and us. This administrator will have 2 to 3 assisting priests who will serve as parochial vicars and/or a priest chaplain for area nursing homes, Butler Memorial Hospital, and the prison. God-willing a deacon or two will also be assigned to the new clergy team. This new clergy team will have 2 to 3 years to first pray with you and get to know all the people that make up the 5 parishes. Second, the clergy team and the key parish leaders that emerge will use the guide of the Diocesan blue print, which is the fruit of the last 3 years of prayer and study from the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, to formulate a proposal to our Bishop for the establishment of merging our 5 parishes into one new parish. God-willing in the year 2020 or 2021, the Bishop will come to install the previous 5 parish administrator as the new single parish pastor for a term of 6 years. Throughout the consolidation process and the unfolding of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, my prayer is that we continue to look up and move forward in courage, collaboration, and compassion. May we remain to learn, love, and live Jesus as a branch, after pruning, grows anew into a stronger and more vibrant life. God Bless You, Father Nick

THIS WEEKEND: ON MISSION ANNOUNCE- MENTS: Today at Mass you will hear about On Mission for The Church Alive! decisions for your parish. In the announcement you will learn: (1) the final Parish Grouping that your parish will be in; (2) the clergy team assigned to serve the grouping; and (3) the maximum number of Masses for the grouping beginning October 15th. With these announcements, there are many tasks ahead to bring about the vision of vibrant parishes in our communities. The first task over the coming weeks and months is to build relationships, especially between the parish communities in the grouping and with the clergy teams who are eager to begin serving you. As we continue to share in the joy of the resurrection of Jesus we must not be discouraged by the challenges that may come. Instead, we are called to go forward with hope for the good of our parishes and for the good of our own lives with God. The information about your grouping and all the groupings is available online at onmissionchurchalive.org and will be shared in your parish bulletin and the Pittsburgh Catholic next weekend. May God bless the Church of Pittsburgh, our parish communities and each of us.
