Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH December Offering To Help Haitian Children s Hospital December 3 communion offering will go to Grace Children s Hospital in Por t-au-prince, Haiti. Grace cares for children in the poorest country of the western hemisphere, where approximately 80% of the people live on less than $1 a day. In the early 1960s International Child Care's founders Jim and Virginia Snavley visited Haiti. They witnessed the shocking sight of children dying in the streets from tuberculosis, malnutrition, and other illnesses practically unheard of in the U.S. at the time. They felt God's call to open a clinic there and founded Grace Children's Hospital in 1967. Grace is recognized as Haiti s December 2017 CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS leading medical facility, and it gives hope for children to live beyond their low lifeexpectancy. The earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 forever changed the nation and severely damaged Grace Children's Hospital campus. The hospital has rebuilt transitional facilities to serve the people and has new outreaches to tent communities nearby. Each year, the hospital receives thousands of children suffering from malnutrition, TB, HIV, and other diseases. Seriously ill children are admitted to the inpatient ward and receive constant care from the hospital s all-haitian staff. Children receive excellent medical care from professional doctors and nurses, nutritious meals to help them grow healthy and strong, and comfort from the dedicated and loving mamans (nurses aides). Once a child is on the road to recovery, he or she can also attend school at the hospital. For some, this is the first and only time they will ever experience a formal education. Children and adults can be treated at Grace s outpatient clinics. People living in slums around the hospital receive vaccinations, prenatal care, and basic health services from specially-trained community health workers and volunteers. Families receive all of these services for a onetime fee of $8 USD, yet many cannot afford even that amount. Grace never turns a child or family away regardless of ability to pay. Please prayerfully consider giving to support this incredible mission project in Haiti. Betty Thomas, Worship Team Chair
