New Series - discover what scripture teaches - engage in a new way Scripture calls us: - ambassadors 2 Cor. 5:18-21 - light to the world Matt. 5:14, Phil 2:15 - clear evidence of God s love John 15 - witnesses to the world Rom. 10:14-17

Some Foundational Issues 1. Purposeful Design - challenged in much of our cultural thought a) created for relationship 26 Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing

that creeps on the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. Gen 1:26-28

- created in the image of God, for relationship with God - created for relationship with one another - created for a relationship with creation b) created with purpose 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. 18 Then the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him. Gen. 2:15-18

- dominion over creation tend and care - relationship between male and female - fruitful and multiply offspring & family - choice to obey God & respond *intentional design in creation for relationship and responsibility. We were designed for this! *challenges cultural thinking about our purpose and responsibilities

2. Redemption and Restoration - Adam and Eve rebel and eat of the tree - Gen. 3 the curse and separation a) mankind deserving of God s wrath - Romans 3:23 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God - Eph 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins

- Romans 5:12 12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned b) God acted in Love - response to Adam and Eve - covenant with Abraham - setting apart a people through whom a savior would be provided

- John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

- Romans 5:6-10 6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

Col. 2:13-14 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

c) we are recipients of this Grace - Eph 2:1-9 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and

were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness

toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. - we have received a great gift redemption from death to life

3. An Uncomfortable Reality - A W Tozer There can be no Savior without Lordship - common lie you can enjoy redemption without participation in restoration. - accept, and live as though it has no bearing

- Eph 4:20-24 But that is not the way you learned Christ! 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

- Jesus in John 14:20-24 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world? 23 Jesus answered him,

If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. - clear our participation in God s plan and commands are important as we receive the grace freely provided

1. Engage in this Series So What - passing on faith God s way will challenge us 2. Be Clear - salvation is a gift accepted by faith - clear we are expected to respond to this gift of grace and participate in God s design 3. Ask God to reveal truth in these days
