EDUCATIONAL VALUES RELATED TO TRINGA PRINCIPLES AS SEEN IN THE MAIN CHARACTER IN LITTLE BOY MOVIE Marlen Naomi Talan & Yuyun Yulia nonny.talan@yahoo.com yuyun.yulia@ustjogja.ac.id ABSTRACT Banyak hal yang dapat kita pelajari dari pendidikan seperti nilai-nilai luhur. There are lots of things that we can learn from education including values. The objectives of this study were to find out the educational values of the main character in relation to Tringa principles. The study applied qualitative method. The object of this study is Little Boy movie. In collecting the data, the researcher used library study and literary study. Meanwhile, for the data analysis technique, the researcher applied organizing, coding and interpreting. Data showed that Tringa principles are revealed such as respect (nglakoni), responsibility (nglakoni), honesty (ngrasa), helpfulness (nglakoni), compassion (ngrasa) and tolerance (nglakoni). Compounding with this, most values occur simultaneously. Key Words: educational values, Tringa principles, Little Boy movie Introduction Education plays an important role in life. Educational values are someone s achieving to the values of life. In the Indonesian context, education is closely related to theories, principles and thoughts of Ki Hadjar Dewantara (KHD). One of them is TRINGA ngerti (understand), ngrasa (comprehending and feeling) and nglakoni (doing or applying).. In relation to Tringa principles, values of education are close to our life because in doing educational values, Tringa principles are needed. We can learn from those values, how to apply them for ourselves in our lives and also for the benefits of all human kinds. 1

Review of Related Literature Welleck and Warren (1949: 9) stated that literature is everything in print wereas Neufeldt (1988: 889) defined movie as a play, story, etc, photographed as such a sequence. According to Spranger on Personality and Problems of Adjustment book by Young (1945: 314-315), types of human characteristics or personality are: the theoretical whose dominant interest is the discovery of truth, the economic who is interested in what is useful, the aesthetic whose highest value is form and harmony, the social whose highest value is love of people, the political whose interest is primarily in power and the religious whose highest value is unity. Lickona (1991: 43-46) mentioned some educational values are as follows: respect means showing regard for the worth of someone or something, responsibility means ability to respond, honesty means do not deceive and cheat people, fairness requires us to treat people impartially, tolerance is a fair and objective attitude toward those whose ideas, race or creed are different from our own, prudence tells us not to put ourselves in moral danger, self discipline tells us not to indulge in self-demeaning or self-destructive pleasure, helpfulness means a helpful spirit takes pleasure in doing kindness, compassion help us not only know our responsibility but also feel it, cooperation means work together towards goals, and democratic values means rule of law, equality of opportunity, due process, reason argument, representative government had taken together. Tringa as Principle of Tamansiswa According to Hariyadi (1988: 46), Tringa (ngerti, ngerasa and ngelakoni) is a compass to learn and also a theory for culture s establishment. Ngerti means knowing or understanding, ngrasa means comprehending or feeling and nglakoni means doing or applying. Research Method The study applied the qualitative method. The object of this study is Little Boy movie. In collecting the data, the researcher used library study (reading relevant 2

books) and literary study (watching movie several times and using transcribing). In analyzing the data, the researcher used qualitative research. According to Creswell (191 195), the steps of qualitative research are: (a) organizing and preparing the data, (b) reading through all the data, (c) using the coding process, (d) making an interpretation. Discussion In this study, educational values and their relation to Tringa principles of the main character can be found in this following table: Table 1 Educational Values of the Main Character No Educational Values Frequency 1 Respect 1 2 Responsibility 2 3 Honesty 6 4 Tolerance 1 5 Helpfulness 2 6 Compassion 2 Based on the table, it was found that quotations revealing educational values and their relation to Tringa principles are ngerti or understanding; ngrasa or feeling; and nglakoni or applying. There were six educational values found in the main character of Little Boy movie. They were respect (1 quotation), responsibility (2 quotations), honesty (6 quotations), tolerance (1 quotation), helpfulness (2 quotations) and compassion (2 quotations). There are three types of characteristics found in the main character in Little Boy movie. The description of the characteristics is: a. Theoretical type The example of theoretical type: PB: Do I have dwarfism or what? DF: You know what? Let's... just keep an eye on you. It's really too soon to make any type of diagnosis. 3

(00:10:20,135 --> 00:10:27,844) Pepper and her mother went to the doctor to measure his height. He wanted to find out the truth of his height whether his height rising or not. Pepper had no attention to the result because he needed the truth. b. Social type The example of theoretical type: PB: Why can't we stay together? JB: Partner, I have to go. PB: I don't want you to go. (00:07:21,024 --> 00:07:27,162) Pepper s father had to replace London, the older brother who did not pass the qualification to be an army. Pepper was very sad. He loved his father so much therefore, he asked his father to stay with. He also did not want his father to go to the war. c. Religious type The example of theoretical type: JB: Do you believe we can do this? PB: Yes, I believe we can do this. (00:03:21,218 --> 00:03:23,921) Pepper and his father were pretending being cowboys. They were certain that they could defeat their enemy. Dad asked Pepper whether he was capable and Pepper was sure that he could defeat the enemy. It is inferred that Pepper had conviction. Educational values of the main character in relation to Tringa principles a. Respect The example of respect: H: What do you want? PB: I'm sorry about the other day. (00:33:49,077 --> 00:33:52,884) 4

Pepper went to Hashimoto s house asking for asking apology. Although Hashimoto was coarse, Pepper uttered his regret. It proved that Pepper had already shown his respect to other people. In relation to Tringa principles, that quotation belongs to ngerti, ngrasa and nglakoni. Pepper knew and also felt that he had already done bad things and mistakes. Therefore, he came to Hashimoto to say sorry. b. Responsibility The example of responsibility: R: Thank God nothing happened to Hashimoto. PB: I've finished. R: Very good. (00:27:27,295 --> 00:27:34,771) Pepper met the priest of the church. The priest knew that Pepper had already made a mistake so that he asked Pepper to pronounce ten Hail Marys and five Our Father in Latin and he did it. It can be inferred that Pepper showed others how to do the right thing and be responsible for what he had done. In relation to Tringa principles, that quotation belongs to ngerti and nglakoni. Pepper knew and did what he is supposed to do. c. Honesty The example of honesty: BE: It's up to you to achieve the impossible. PB: But they're gonna make fun of me. BE: Not if you move the bottle, they won't. (00:19:44,133 --> 00:19:54,749) Pepper went to Ben Eagles show. Pepper was asked to come up to the stage. They had not met yet before but the magician still trusted Pepper although he already told the truth that the audience would laugh at him. It showed that Pepper is an honest person. In relation to Tringa principles, that quotation belongs to ngrasa. Pepper felt that nobody liked him and he would be embarrassed in front of everybody. d. Tolerance 5

The example of tolerance is written below: H : Hey! What are you doing monkeying around my house? PB : I want to hang out. H : Go hang out somewhere else. PB : I meant with you. (00:36:02,176 --> 00:36:14,039) Pepper went to Hashimoto s house asking for forgiveness. By saying I want to hang out and I meant with you, Pepper tried to utter his purpose to become a friend of Hashimoto. It showed that Pepper has tolerance with other people outside or strangers. In relation to Tringa principles, ngrasa and nglakoni are suitable to that quotation. Pepper felt that he had to make an effort to become friends with Hashimoto. He also tried to apply good things or kindness. e. Helpfulness The example of helpfulness: PB: Hey, Jap. Want a soda? H: (just silent and leave Pepper) (00:34:20,808 --> 00:34:28,262) Pepper wanted to go to Hashimoto s house and brought soda for Hashimoto. It proved that Pepper assisted Hashimoto by giving soda to Hashimoto who was tired of repairing his car. In relation to Tringa principles, that quotation belongs to ngrasa and nglakoni. Pepper wanted to become a friend of Hashimoto. He felt that he had to bring something to Hashimoto. He brought soda for Hashimoto who was repairing his car. He tried to apply good things or kindness. f. Compassion The example of compassion: PB: London's not going to war, right? Does that mean that...you're going instead? JB: Yes EB: He'll be back before you know it. PB: Why can't we stay together? JB: Partner, I have to go. PB: I don't want you to go. 6

(00:06:46,922 --> 00:07:27,162) Pepper s father replaced London, the older brother who did not pass the qualification to be an army. Pepper felt very sad because his father would go to the war. Ngrasa in Tringa principles was suitable to this quotation. Pepper felt very sad because his father should replace his brother to go to the war. He would lose his closest partner. That is why he felt very sad. Conclusion The researcher found three characteristics of the main character; they are theoretical, social and religious. Social type is one of the characteristics that appeared mostly. Pepper was a person who is kind, loving, and considerate with others, compassionate and empathetic as well as care with others. The researcher found six educational values in this movie; they are respect, responsibility, honesty, tolerance, compassion and helpfulness. Honesty is one of the educational values that appeared mostly. Pepper was an honest person, not only for other people but also for himself. The researcher found that all educational values that were shown by Pepper Busbee were related to Tringa principles of Ki Hadjar Dewantara. Pepper knew (ngerti), felt (ngrasa) and applied (nglakoni) all values that he had. References Cresswell, J. W. 2003. Research Design Second Edition. California: Sage Publications. Hariyadi. 1988.
