We have become so accustomed to the idea of divine should arouse in us. We are indifferent to the message, taking only the pleasant and agreeable out of it and forgetting the serious aspect, that the God of the world draws near to the people of our little earth and lays claim to us. ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer 2

The Collect of the Day Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light; now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in this glorious majesty, to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you, and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen please be seated The Proclamation of the Word The Readings Isaiah 64:1-9 Reader Reader People A reading from the Prophet Isaiah: read by Nan Campion 1 O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence-- 2 as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil-- to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! 3 When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. 4 From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him. 5 You meet those who gladly do right, those who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned; because you hid yourself we transgressed. 6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. 7 There is no one who calls on your name, or attempts to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. 8 Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. 9 Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord, and do not remember iniquity forever. Now consider, we are all your people. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. please remain seated 4

Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19 Refrain Choir 1. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; Thou that sittest above the cherubim, shine forth. 2. Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up thy might, And come to save us. Refrain 4. O Jehovah God of hosts, How long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people? 5. Thou hast fed them with the bread of tears, And given them tears to drink in large measure. 6. Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours; And our enemies laugh among themselves. Refrain 17. Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, Upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself. 18. So shall we not go back from thee: Quicken thou us, and we will call upon thy name. 19. Turn us again, O Jehovah God of hosts; Cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved. Gospel Acclamation please stand Choir The Word of God came and lived here among us, so all who believe might be the children of God. please remain standing and turn to face the reader as they speak the Gospel of Christ amongst us 5

Gospeller 24 "But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in clouds' with great power and glory. 27 Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. 28 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 32 "But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35 Therefore, keep awake--for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36 or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake." It is indeed right, our duty and joy, that we should always and everywhere give thanks to you, O Lord, holy Father, mighty Creator, and eternal God. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with the whole company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you, and singing: Sanctus Hymn Book 719 Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there, by his once and for all offering of himself, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted, and in his holy gospel commands us to continue, a perpetual memorial of his precious death until he comes again. 10

Hear us, O merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we who receive this bread and wine according to your Son Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood. On the night that Jesus was betrayed, he took bread, and, when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Accept through Jesus Christ, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the lifegiving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church, and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, world without end. As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Communion If you do not wish to receive the wine, you may touch the base of the cup. Hymn 101 Hail to the Lord's anointed Hail to the Lord's anointed, great David's greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, to take away transgression, and rule in equity. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, love, joy, and hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth. Before him on the mountains shall peace the herald go, and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow. Kings shall fall down before him, and gold and incense bring; all nations shall adore him, his praise all people sing. To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend, his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. he on his throne shall rest, from age to age more glorious, all-blessing and all-blest. The tide of time shall never his covenant remove. His name shall stand forever: that name to us is Love. Hymn 48 Let all mortal flesh keep silence Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for, with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to us approacheth, our full homage to demand. 12

King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood, he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. At his feet the six-wingèd seraph, cherubim with sleepless eye veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, Prayer after Communion please stand God for whom we wait, you have fed us with the bread of eternal life. Keep us ever watchful, that we may be ready to stand before the Son of Man. We ask this in the name of Christ the Lord. Amen. The Blessing Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be amongst you and remain with you always. Recessional Hymn 114 The Dismissal Lo! He comes with clouds descending Lo! He comes with clouds descending, once for favoured sinners slain; thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah! God appears on earth to reign. Every eye shall now behold him, robed in dreadful majesty; all who set at nought and sold him, pierced, and nailed him to the tree, deeply grieving, deeply grieving, deeply grieving, shall the true Messiah see. Now redemption, long expected, see in solemn pomp appear; all his saints, on earth rejected, thrill the trumpet sound to hear: hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah! See the day of God appear! Yea, amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory; claim the kingdom for thine own: O come quickly! O come quickly! O come quickly! Hallelujah! Come, Lord, come! People O Emmanuel, come and save us! Lord Jesus, come soon! Postlude Fuge über das Magnificat pro organo pleno, BWV 733 J.S. Bach 14
