CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST CONGREGATIONAL 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai`i Second Sunday of Advent, December 9, 2018 Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor Pre-Service Music Congregational singing WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD Words of Greeting Pastoral Welcome Prelude: Nowell, Nowell Old German Carol, arr. Stickles Jayson Rekis Rev. Eric S. Anderson Lighting of the Second Advent Candle (Peace): Henry & Joyce Nakamoto Family Nakamoto Family: Despite the well-known benefits of peace, our conflicts leap to violence all too often. In homes, on streets, in parks, and along the restless borders of the nations, we leave the path of peace to take the weary way of war. Christ Jesus called us to another road. All Sing: Let peace take wings and make its flight To all ends of the earth Let weeping cease and mourning end As God s reign proves its worth In homes and lands and in our souls When Jesus comes to birth. TUNE: BROTHER JAMES AIR Nakamoto Family: In the first candle of Advent, we declare our Hope. In the second candle of Advent, we raise our Hope for Peace. This candle glows for the coerced. This candle glows for those in fear. This candle glows to pierce the shadows that cloud our vision. This candle glows for Peace. Hymn #101: Comfort, Comfort O My People (v. 1-3)

Invocation Holy One, inspire Peace within us. Inspire Peace that flows from us. Inspire Peace that raises hearts, and quenches rage. Inspire Peace that overcomes the world. Amen. Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, And to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen. Amen. WE SHARE THE WORD OF GOD Anthem: The Angel Choirs Kountz Na Leo Ni`o Lani Time with Children Please rise if you are able and join hands in a circle for the Lord s Prayer in unison: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Scriptures: Luke 1:68-79 Luke 3:1-6 Sermon: Guide My Feet Rev. Eric S. Anderson Pastoral Prayer/Prayers of People Hymn #497: Guide My Feet (v. 1-2, 4) WE RESPOND IN WORD AND DEED

Reception of New Members: Henry Nakamoto (Affirmation of Faith) Julann Sonomura (Affirmation of Faith) Cheryl Sumida (Reaffirmation of Faith) Invitation Questions of the Candidates Baptisms Sharing of the Covenant All: We covenant one with another to seek and respond to the Word and the will of God. We agree to walk together in the ways of the Lord, made known and to be made known to us. We hold it to be the mission of the Church to witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ in the entire world, while worshiping God, and striving for truth, justice, and peace. As did those who came before us, we depend on the Holy Spirit to lead and empower us. We pray for the coming of the kingdom of God, and we look with faith toward the triumph of righteousness and eternal life. Welcome Pastor: Let us, the members of Church of the Holy Cross UCC, express our welcome and affirm our mutual ministry in Christ. People: We welcome you with joy in the common life of this church. We promise you our friendship and prayers as we share the hopes and labors of the church of Jesus Christ. By the power of the Holy Spirit may we continue to grow together in God s knowledge and love and be witnesses of our risen Savior. Prayer Invitation to the Offering: In times of joy, the greatest gift anyone can receive is the gift of peace. In times of sorrow, the greatest gift anyone can receive is the gift of peace. In times of strife, the

greatest gift anyone can receive is the gift of peace. May our gifts now promote that greatest gift of peace in homes near and far away. Let our offering now be received. Offertory: The Quiet Carol -- Lorenz Please rise if you are able Doxology: Hoʻonani i ka Makua mau Ke Keiki me ka ʻUhane nō Ke Akua mau, hoʻomaikaʻi pū Ko kēia ao ko kēlā ao.
