BLURRED LINES: IN THE WORLD, NOT OF THE WORLD I John 2:15-17 Friday Night Keynote Devotional Justin Morton INTRODUCTION: A. The greatest decision a person will ever make is to dedicate and surrender their lives to Jesus (Gal. 2:20). B. We want our lives to be centered on Jesus, but maybe more often than we d like, that s not what ends up happening. C. Often, we find our love for the world competing with our love for Jesus. WE CANNOT BE FULLY COMMITTED TO GOD IF WE LOVE THE WORLD. A. John is giving them a command that He expects them to obey. B. There is no such thing as an open relationship with God. We cannot love God and love what He hates (Jam. 4:4; Matt. 6:24). C. Those who love the world do not love the father. LOVE FOR THE WORLD INTERFERES WITH OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. A. Demas (2 Tim. 4:9-11) - Even though Demas was once a fellow-worker with Paul (Philemon 24), he succumbed to the lures of the world and walked away from being a servant of God. B. Judas Iscariot (Matt. 26:14-16) He sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. C. The Rich young ruler (Lk. 18:18-23) Walked away from following Jesus and having eternal life. WHY DO WE STRUGGLE WITH LOVING THE WORLD? A. Lust of the Flesh (Gal. 5:19-21) B. Lust of the Eyes (Matt. 5:27-28; Job 31:1) C. Pride of Life (Matt. 16:26)

How Do We Live IN The World Without Loving And Being Like The World? A. Choose the eternal over the temporary (Phil. 3:20; Heb. 11:24). B. Choose to do God s will (Jn. 14:15; I Jn. 5:3). Conclusion: A. If we want to live pleasing lives to God, it starts by not allowing our love for the world to compete with our love for the Lord. B. God would not ask us to do something that was impossible for us to do. We can live in the world without falling in love with and becoming like the world.

When you are ashamed, how do you react? C. Do you feel ashamed when you are sin? Shame is Not Shameful A. Israel did not feel shame when they sinned (Jer. 6:15; 8:12) B. Are we proud of our sin, or are we ashamed? C. God punishes those who sin and do not feel regret for doing it, look at Israel going into exile. D. How we feel about sin is a big part of learning to follow God. Peter and Paul Both Felt Shame A. Peter felt shame when he denied Jesus (Matt. 26:69-75). B. Paul felt shame because of the things that he did in the past (1 Tim. 1:15; Acts 22). C. If these two felt shame because of their actions, shouldn t we feel shame when we fall short? Sin is Shameful and We Should Avoid It A. Psalm 1:1 tells us about becoming comfortable around sin. B. When we become comfortable around sin, we do not feel ashamed about what we are doing. C. Sin is like a termite eating away at our foundation. We Need to Stand Firm Against Sin A. Rom. 12:2 tells us that we should not fit in with the world B. This means that there are people that we cannot be friends with.

C. This means that we may have to find new friends who help us get to heaven rather than keep us from getting there. Conclusion: A. Do we still feel shame when we sin? B. We need to remember that God hates sin and that we need to stay away from it
