Thanks to a tip from a member of Knox Church, two international students have agreed to a one-month rental of the house ending in late August. Jay is in engineering, and his wife is in the dental field. We have provisional arrangements for our Syrian family, should they be given their visas and plane tickets before the rental ends. Page 12 News from the Pews ST. ANDREW S SUMMER WORSHIP THEMES 2016 July worship services: Sula Anne Kosacky will be leading worship. July I'm going to take a whole month to talk about what we receive from God. So those are the weekly themes: Rest, Creation, Prayer, Grace/love. And coming from the Wesleyan background, the message will be that we don't need to earn these things, and they aren't limited to when God favors us.. But that we - in response - draw closer to God. July Themes- God Gives to Us... July 3rd - Rest Matthew 11:25-30 - Come to me you are are weary and I will give you rest. Psalm 23. July 10th - Creation - Genesis 1, John 1 July 17th - Prayer/Rending Our Hearts - Joel 1:13-20 A Call to Lamentation Joel 2:12-14 Rend Your Heart Matthew 5:1-12 The Beatitudes July 24th - Love & Mercy - Romans 5:1-8 - while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Galatians 2:15-16, Justified by faith August to September - Grant Williams will be leading worship. I am Seven week worship series In the four Gospels Jesus unique authority and identity as the Son of God are expressed in sayings which begin with the words I am (Greek, ego eimi), a phenomenon most frequently seen in John s Gospel. In the synoptic Gospels we see an example of this when Jesus comes to the disciples walking on the water and he identifies himself by saying, ego eimi, I am, which the NRSV translates It is I. John s Gospel - Seven times in John s Gospel we find Jesus saying I am and then adding a vivid metaphor. I am the bread of life 6:35, 41, 48, 51. I am the light of the world 8:12, 9:5. I am the door/gate of the sheep 10:7, 9. I am the good shepherd 10:11, 14.
Page 13 News from the Pews ST. ANDREW S SUMMER WORSHIP THEMES 2016 (CONT D) I am the resurrection and the life 11:25. I am the way, the truth and the life 14:6. I am the true vine 15:1, 5. Three of them, The bread of life, light of the world and resurrection and life interpret miracles Jesus has performed. Two of them, I am the good shepherd and I am the true vine imply that the Jews as the people of God, Israel, will be replaced by the followers of Jesus as the people of God, new Israel. Two others, I am the door/gate and, I am the way the truth and the life, make Jesus the only way to enter into a saving relationship with God. July 31 - I am the Bread of Life - John 6:22-59 August 7 - I am the Light of the World - John 8:12-20 August 14 - I am the Door/ Gate of the sheep - John 10: 1-10 August 21 - I am the Good Shepherd - John 10: 11-18 August 28 - I am the Resurrection and the Life - John 11: 17-27 September 4 - I am the way the truth and the life - John 14: 1-7 September 11 - I am the True Vine - John 15: 1-17 September 18 - the Believe Series - Resumes
