For Punjabis, more than just a festival, Lohri is also an example of a way of life. Lohri celebrates fertility and the spark of life. People gather around the bonfires, throw sweets, puffed rice and popcorn into the flames, sing popular songs and exchange greetings. An extremely auspicious day, Lohri marks the sun's entry in to the 'Makar Rashi' (northern hemisphere). Lodi- The Bonfire Ritual & Song & Dance: This is prayer to Agni, the fire god, to bless the land with abundance and prosperity. People circle around (parikrama) the bonfire and throw puffed rice, popcorn and other munchies into the fire. shouting "Aadar aye dilather jaye" (May honor come and poverty vanish!), and sing popular folk songs and dance around the bonfire. The prasad comprises five main items: til, gajak, jaggery, peanuts, and popcorn. LODI - A Festival of spreading love and happiness & Harvest of happiness and dancing Bhangra around bonfire. The tribals start their New Year from the day of Sankranti by dancing and feasting around bonfires. Rice and til remain the two important ingredients of this festival. Sesame has a hot potency and its use in sweets is supposed to be good for health in winter. Further, til being soft, its exchange means exchange of love and tender feelings Makar Sankranti is celebrated Makar Sankranti also marks the northward throughout India as a harvest apparent migration of the sun or Uttarayana, festival.
