Valley Isle Fellowship Love God. Love His Church. Love His World 473 S High St PO Box 886 Wailuku, HI 96793 This past Sunday I preached on the Vision and Goal that comes out of Ephesians 4:11-16. This passage reveals the passion of God for His people. He wants His people to do His work. This cannot be accomplished unless God s people love Him with all of their hearts, minds, and souls. It is my burning desire to see this accomplished in Valley Isle Fellowship. Everything that we do in VIF is done with the hope that this would honor and glorify the Lord. Nothing honors and glorifies the Lord more than His people becoming all that He desires us to be. All of the good works that we might do in His name will not honor and glorify Him more than each person that claims Jesus as their Lord and Savior coming to the point of loving Jesus with all of their being. If you take away all of the props and supports of Christendom, will you still love Jesus with all of your heart, mind, and soul? If you were stuck on a deserted island, will you still love Jesus with everything that is within you? If this world threw at you the worst trials and challenges that Satan could muster up, would you still love Jesus? Loving Jesus means that you will not give up on Him because He does not give up on you! Loving Jesus is so important that when you are truly falling in love with Him your life patterns will begin to change. Everything begins to get reoriented around Jesus. He becomes the center of your whole existence. Seeking for every way possible to please Him begins to dominate all of your waking hours. His pleasure begins to become your pleasure. desires. His desires become your You might say that this is impossible with all of the commitments that we have to make in this world, with job, family, schooling, and other kinds of commitments that we are all forced to make. However, if you just look around you, you will see that there are many examples of fanatical fans. Fans that are so committed to their Moving On To Maturity Pastor Stephen Kaneshiro team, their star, to whatever their focus is that they will spend whatever it takes, wear whatever crazy attire, yell and scream with great excitement and enthusiasm so that their desire to show their all out commitment will not be mistaken. Crazy sports fans. Crazy music fans. Crazy whatever kind of fan you may be. Why can t there be followers of Jesus that are so in love with Him that whatever the cost may be, they are willing and able to pay that cost? Building followers of Jesus that are that committed is what Jesus calls us to be. An interesting and powerful revelation in Ephesians 4 is that the Lord does not want just a few special individuals to stand out like this. He desires us ALL to be like this with a visible unity and cohesion that becomes a powerful demonstration of the love, grace, and mercy that can come only through the Father in Heaven. He is the reason for our existence and for our fulfillment. We can become so excited in Him that all of our relationships revolve around Him and reflects His love and grace. All of our speech reflects His love and grace. All of our actions reflects this as well. Imagine what your work situation would be like if you allowed Jesus to fill your speech, actions, and relationships. Imagine what your home life and your friendships would be like if you allowed Jesus to become front and center of all of theses venues. To love Jesus with all of your heart, mind, and soul is known as the Great Commandment. This is so important that if you get this commandment wrong, everything else that you attempt in the Christian life will fall apart because your love for Jesus is shaky. Any ministry or service that you do for the Lord will be built on the sand where any storm (continued on page 2) IN THIS ISSUE 1-2 Moving On To Maturity 3-5 For the Person Struggling with Doubt 5 Missionary Spotlight 6-7 Announcements 8 VIF Calendar 9 Sermon Notes

Moving On To Maturity by Pastor Stephen Kaneshiro (page 2 of 2) can blow you apart. However, if you build your life on the solid ground of an all-encompassing love for Jesus, nothing will be able to shake you. Ephesians 4:11-16 (NLT) 11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. This passage is the direction and goal that God desires and I pray that this will be your desire for Valley Isle Fellowship. In the coming weeks I will be calling for Listening Sessions or Discussion Sessions to begin to flush out how together we can move to accomplish all of this for the honor and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you all. Website: www.unlockingthebible.org Date Posted: Mar 25th, 2016 Page 1 of 3 People struggle to believe. If this is you, it may help you to know that others shared the same struggle, even in the time of Jesus. John tells us the marvelous story of Thomas. Doubting Thomas is the man in the inner-circle of the twelve who struggled to believe. The story begins like this: Jesus had appeared to ten disciples on the evening of the first day of the week. He came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you (John 20:19). Then Jesus showed them his hands and his side, and said again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. And he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit (John 20:20-22). Thomas was not there. When Thomas meets up with them, the ten disciples are full of joy. It becomes evident that something happened to them. And whatever has happened to them, it has not happened to him. So, Thomas says, Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe (John 20:25). Why Do People Struggle to Believe? Let me suggest three reasons, all of which were true for Thomas, and they are the experience of many people today. 1. Thomas had seen and experienced indescribable evil. Crucifixion was a horrendous event. What would it have been to see this happen right there in front of you? And what would it be like to see this happen to someone you love? Many people struggle to believe because of the appalling evil in the world. There will be folks reading this today who would say, How can I believe in a God who is good, in light of what I have seen? How can I believe in a God who is in control, in light of what I have experienced? If it were not for the resurrection, what could we say about the evil in the world? Darkness and injustice would remain unanswered at the heart of the universe forever. But the Bible says that God has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead (Acts 17:31). 2. Thomas had seen and experienced massive disappointment. For other people, the struggle to believe arises from massive disappointment. This too was true of Thomas. Thomas left everything to follow Jesus. He had extended himself to serve Christ for three years. He had high hopes, along with the other disciples, that Jesus would lead them into great things. And this was a massive disappointment when all of that ended on Good Friday. How can God be good and in control when he lets this happen? Maybe this is where you are the loss of a job, the loss of your health, the loss of a loved one, the failure of a great venture, or the collapse of a once-vibrant ministry. Where is God in that? It is only through the resurrection that we have anything to say. Justice will be called to account. The apostle Paul says, I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Romans 8:18). (continued on page 4) - 3 -

Website: www.unlockingthebible.org Date Posted: Mar 25th, 2016 Page 2 of 3 3. Thomas had seen and experienced growing loneliness. We re not told why Thomas was not with the other disciples when Jesus appeared on that first Sunday. He was there the following week, but it seems that Thomas was on an increasingly lonely path. Thomas doesn t feel at ease with Jesus friends. But he doesn t belong with Jesus enemies either. He is not at home in the church, and he s not really at home in the world. Where does he actually belong? The risen Christ is gathering a great company of people from every generation in history and from every nation on the planet people who love him, trust him, and who will enjoy him forever. He is inviting you to be part of it a community that will in every way exceed any community that has ever existed in the history of the world and will dispel loneliness. How Christ Shows His Love For People Who Struggle with Doubts Here is the good news for every person who has weak faith today: Christ loves people with weak faith, who have said, I will never believe. John records how Christ led Thomas to faith. Christ is able to lead you to faith, and I want you to see how he does it. Christ shows his love through a surprising experience. Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. (John 20:26) I say this was surprising because no one was expecting it certainly not Thomas! This is how Jesus shows his love to a person struggling with doubt: He draws near, and in some way, you experience his presence. It can happen through a friend, or a family member, or through an article like this. At first you are not even sure you know who Christ is, but you become aware that he is there and he is reaching out to you. When he comes near, he says, Peace be with you! Don t run away! I haven t come to condemn you. I ve come to lead you to faith! My prayer is that you ll experience this today. You have struggled with faith. You have not felt that you could believe. But today Jesus Christ is reaching out to you in love. Christ shows his love through a compelling evidence. Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. (John 20:27) Christ was not there when Thomas said, I will never believe Unless I see in his hands the marks of the nails, and place my finger into the marks of the nails, and place my hand into his side (John 20:25). But Jesus knew what Thomas said, so it is very striking that when he appears, Christ does not write Thomas off. Christ does not say, Well Thomas, you ve made your position quite clear. Please pack your bags. I no longer want you as my disciple. No! Christ s words are quite different: Thomas, you said you would not believe unless there was overwhelming evidence. Very well here it is: Put your finger here, and see my hands. Put out your hand and place it in my side. Christian faith is not a blind leap in the dark. It is a reasoned trust in a risen Savior, based on compelling evidence. What does this look like for us? Thomas saw the hands and the side of Jesus. None of us have had that opportunity, so what does the compelling evidence look like for us? (continued on page 5) - 4 -

From the desk of Pastor Jeremy For the Person Struggling with Doubt By Colin S. Smith. Colin S. Smith. Used with permission. Website: www.unlockingthebible.org Date Posted: Mar 25th, 2016 Page 3 of 3 The compelling evidence on which you can take a reasoned step of faith in Jesus Christ does not come by personal resurrection experiences for each of us. It comes through the evidence provided in the Gospels: These have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ. This is how you touch the evidence of who Jesus is. You find yourself looking into the Bible, wanting to discover who he is, and as you read through the Gospels, you find compelling evidence that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and by believing this, you have life in his name. The Word of God is compelling to the awakened heart. You begin to see something that you did not see before. Why? Because he has been awakening faith in you. Christ shows his love through a life-changing command. Do not disbelieve, but believe. (John 20:27) To me, this is the most wonderful thing of all: Jesus knew everything about Thomas. He knew what Thomas had said in secret. He knew all about his unbelief. Yet, Jesus still wants Thomas to be his disciple. Jesus still wants Thomas to have life in his name. So Jesus calls Thomas to faith: Do not disbelieve, but believe (John 20:27)! In the light of your experience and in the light of the evidence, I call on you to stop doubting and believe. I want you as my disciple, Thomas. What else was there for Thomas to do than to fall on his knees and confess Jesus as his Lord and his God? How is Jesus Christ pursuing you? The Son of God reaches out to you in love and with grace today. He wants you to be his disciple. After all that he suffered to redeem sinners, it matters to him that you should become his disciple. He lays before you the evidence, through his Word, on which you can venture a reasoned trust in him. He calls you! Now stop doubting and believe!
