OPENING Evening prayer, or Vespers, from the Latin word Vespera meaning evening is a worship service at the close of the day that has its roots in the Jewish daily hours of prayer. In its transfer to the early Christian church and to Vespers services today, it has kept its contemplative character, offering thanks for the mercies of the day, and prayers for divine protection and the gift of inner peace. Vespers traditionally included the singing of psalms, hymns and the canticle of Mary s song Magnificat, as well as readings from scripture and the offering of prayers. Thanksgiving for Light Sit PSALMODY Psalm Prayer Leader: Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O God, and let your loving kindness descend upon us, that with purified hearts we may sing your praise with the church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever. Psalm 96:1-9 [10-13] People sing verses in bold print. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing to the LORD, bless the name of the LORD; proclaim God s salvation from day to day. 3 Declare God s glory a- mong the nations and God s wonders a- mong all peoples. 4 For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised, more to be feared than all gods. R 5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; but you, O LORD, have made the heavens. 6 Majesty and magnificence are in your presence; power and splendor are in your sanctuary. 7 Ascribe to the LORD, you families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD hon- or and power. 8 Ascribe to the LORD the honor due the holy name; bring offerings and enter the courts of the LORD. R 9 Worship the LORD in the beau- ty of holiness; tremble before the LORD, all the earth. 10 Tell it out among the nations: The LORD is king! The one who made the world so firm that it cannot be moved will judge the peo- ples with equity. 11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; let the field be joyful and all that is therein. 12 Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy at your com- ing, O LORD, for you come to judge the earth. 13 You will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with your truth. R Psalm Prayer Leader: Ever-living God, the heavens were glad and the earth rejoiced when you sent your Son, the incarnate Word, to dwell with us. Help us to proclaim your glory to those who do not know you, until the whole earth sings a new song to you, with your Son and the Holy Spirit one God, now and forever. All: Amen
WORD Reading: Matthew 22:15-22 (The Message Translation) 15-17 That s when the Pharisees plotted a way to trap him into saying something damaging. They sent their disciples, with a few of Herod s followers mixed in, to ask, Teacher, we know you have integrity, teach the way of God accurately, are indifferent to popular opinion, and don t pander to your students. So tell us honestly: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? 18-19 Jesus knew they were up to no good. He said, Why are you playing these games with me? Why are you trying to trap me? Do you have a coin? Let me see it. They handed him a silver piece. 20 This engraving who does it look like? And whose name is on it? 21 They said, Caesar. Then give Caesar what is his, and give God what is his. 22 The Pharisees were speechless. They went off shaking their heads. Leader: Word of God. Word of life. All: Thanks be to God. Reflection (sit) Following the Reflection and some silence: Leader: Jesus said, I am the light of the world. All: Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness. Gospel Canticle (stand)
