Week 1- Teaching 001.p01 Foundational Healing Scriptures Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities, and the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. The Hebrew word for infirmities or griefs in the King James Version is translated 12 out of 14 times in the Bible as sicknesses. It is never translated as sin or sins. H2483 (cholîy, khol-ee ) From H2470; malady, anxiety, calamity: disease, grief, sick (-ness). In the original Hebrew the word for sorrows meant mental anguish. H4341 (mak ôb) From H3510; anguish or affliction: grief, pain, sorrow. The word took up or bare from the King James Version implies substitution suffering for; not suffering with. If Christ has taken or bourne from the King James Version our sicknesses, why should we also have to bear them? H5375 (nâsâ, naw-saw ) A primitive root; to lift: suffer, to bear (up), bring (forth), burn, carry (away), take away, up Verse 5 uses the word wounds, translated in other versions as stripes or bruises. It goes on to say that we are healed. H7495 (râphâ, raw-faw ) A primitive root; properly to mend (by stitching), that is to cure: cure, (cause to) heal, physician, make whole. Matthew 8:16-17 (quoting the Isaiah 53 passage above) When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him [Jesus] and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases. The word infirmities in the Greek is G769 (astheneia, as-then -i-ah) From G772; feebleness (of body or mind); by implication malady; moral frailty: disease, infirmity, sickness, weakness. The word diseases is G3554; of uncertain affinity; a malady disease, infirmity, sickness. 1 Peter 2:24 (quoting the Isaiah 53 passage) He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. The word wounds is G3468 (molops, mo -lopes) A mole ( black eye ) or blow mark: stripe. The word healed is G2390 (iaomai, ee-ah -om-ahee) To cure heal, make whole.

Week 1- Teaching 001.p02 In the incident of the brazen serpent in Numbers 21:4-9, God foreshadowed Christ s death on the cross. He also made clear again that the blessing of redemption includes both the forgiveness of sins and the healing of disease. Psalm 103: 1-5 Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle s. Also, in the New Testament Jesus shows us that His forgiving sin and healing power are closely linked and go hand in hand. Matthew 9:1-8 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven. At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, This fellow is blaspheming! Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Get up and walk? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. Then he said to the paralytic, Get up, take your mat and go home. And the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men. This passage is repeated in Luke 5:22-24. Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier: to say Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Get up and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins... He said to the paralyzed man, I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home. Jesus shows His authority to forgive sins with the miracle of healing.

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p03 Is it Really God s Will to Heal? Precious Lord, you have said that you are the truth and the life and that you will lead us into all truth. You willingly give us wisdom when we come to you and ask. We come to you for wisdom and truth regarding health and healing. Speak to us clearly as you open our eyes to your truths and let us not be misled. We put our faith and hope in you as we ask this in Jesus name, Amen. What does the Bible teach about healing? We at believe it teaches that God wants to heal you and that he has provided for your healing through Jesus Christ. Without thoroughly believing that God wants to heal you, you will not have faith for healing. Knowing the will of God concerning sickness and healing provides the groundwork of faith where God acts on his promises. Examine these passages and decide for yourself. Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. James 1:6-7 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord. The starting place for each of us must be to examine the character of God. Is God honest? Is he full of integrity? Does he change his mind or go back on his Word? Is he the same God now that he was in the Bible, with the same will and the same character? Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? 1 Kings 8:56c Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave through his servant Moses. Psalm 119:89 Your word, O LORD, is eternal. It stands firm in the heavens. Jeremiah 1:12b For I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled. The Hebrew translation for watching is hasten. H 8245; hasten- to be awake, watch, stand guard. God in all his unlimited power is standing guard over his Word to see that it is fulfilled. Psalm 89:34 I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. Galatians 3:17 What I mean is this: the law, introduced by Jesus 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p04 Based on the scriptures we can see that God is honest, consistent, reliable and full of integrity. Satan, on the other hand, is a liar. The devil has denied God s Word for thousands of years and continues to deceive God s children into doubting the reliability, truth, and dependability of God s Word. John 8:44b He [The devil] was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language for he is a liar and the father of lies. To further examine the character of God, ask yourself, does he show favoritism? Does he desire to heal some and not others? What does scripture say? Deuteronomy 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. Acts 10:34b God does not show favoritism. (KJV God is no respecter of persons.) This indicates that God s will is the same for each person. If he wants one to be well, he wants all to be well. The provision that he has made for one is the same provision that he has made for all. If we allow ourselves to entertain a justified maybe in one case, then we are compelled to apply a maybe in every case. Next, let us examine God s history regarding healing his people. God has been healing people ever since the Exodus. Exodus 23:25b-26 I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span. Psalm 105:37 He [God] brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold, and from among their tribes no one faltered. (KJV And there was not one feeble person among their tribes.) When God called the Israelites out of Egypt, he gave them a statute and an ordinance for health & healing: Exodus 15:26 He said, If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you. Exodus 38:26 says that at the time of the construction of the temple, a year or two after the Exodus, there were 603,550 men over 20 years old, plus women and children. Bible scholars estimate that two to three million people in total were part of the Exodus. Can you imagine that many people with not one feeble person among them? (Psalm 105) If under the old covenant, that many could be well at one time, then how much more may God s people who are living under the new and better covenant today be made well! Health and healing was God s way under the old covenant and health and healing is God s way under the new covenant, which we may claim today through our belief in Jesus as Savior and Lord of our lives.

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p05 Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. Psalm 103:2-3 Praise the LORD, O my soul; and forget not all his benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases. Matthew 7:7a Ask and it will be given to you... John 14:14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. The following scriptures clearly make known that it is God s will to heal whoever comes to him in faith. Healing is his will, his way. God has no other way for his people. He has willed us healing, wholeness, and strength in Christ. This is our right and privilege in him. We please and glorify him by accepting his way and then by walking in it. As you read these scriptures, let your spiritual eyes note and see that it is the will of God to heal all who come to him, not just some; and that he heals every sickness and disease, not just some of them. Matthew 4:23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. Matthew 8:16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. Matthew 9:35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. Matthew 12:15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick. Matthew 14:36 And begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed. Matthew 15:30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. Mark 6:56 And wherever he went into villages, towns or countryside they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p06 Luke 4:40 When the sun was setting the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. Luke 6:18b-19 Those troubled by evil spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all. Luke 9:11 But the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing. Acts 5:16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed. Acts 28:8-9 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, he placed his hands on him and healed him. When this happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured Please note that while on the occasions listed above, Jesus and the disciples healed all the sick, there are a few instances listed in the Bible where Jesus healed many. We are not given enough information to clearly discern the reasons for these instances, but it appears that there might have been times in Jesus ministry when he passed by some sick people to get to others; for example, when He healed the man at the pool of Bethesda who was unable to get into the water before the others who wanted healing. (John 5:2-3). Mark 1:32-34a That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. Mark 3:10 For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. Mark 6:13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. Luke 7:21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. There is also one time that the Bible states that Jesus did not do many miracles at a certain place. This seems to imply, however, that he did do some. Matthew 13:58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. In today s world, sickness and disease are taking a terrible toll. They are affecting the bodies of millions, including Christians. If it is God s will to heal all, why is this happening?

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p07 Why aren t all healed? There are a number of reasons. Listed here are only a few we can begin examining: Ignorance of what the Bible teaches regarding healing Uncertainty that it is God s will to heal Traditions of men taking precedence over the teaching of God

Week 1- Teaching 001.p08 Ignorance of What the Bible Teaches Regarding Healing The remedy for ignorance of what the Bible teaches concerning healing is to study the ministry of Jesus, who proclaimed from the start what he came to do. Further, we can examine what he did during the three years of his public ministry, and what he asked and equipped his disciples to do. Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. Hebrews 10:7c I have come to do your will, O God. John 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities, the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. The Hebrew word rendered griefs or infirmities is translated elsewhere in the Bible as sicknesses. By his wounds is also translated by his stripes or bruises we are healed. The word took up or bare (KJV) implies substitution suffering for; not suffering with. If Christ has borne or taken our sicknesses, why should we bear them? Matthew 8:16-17 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases. The remedy for ignorance of any kind is to study what God s Word says about the matter. In Deuteronomy 28, disease and sickness were a part of the curse of the law, a punishment or a consequence for the disobedient. However, Galatians 3:13a declares, Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. If we want to see people delivered from the bondage of disease, we must teach them the part of God s Word that sets them free from disease. Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. John 8:31b-32 Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p09 Uncertainty that it is God s Will to Heal All A great barrier to many seeking healing is uncertainty in their minds that it is the will of God to heal all. Just as it is God s desire that all be saved, are all saved? In the same way, God desires to heal all, yet are all healed? No, in order to be saved or healed, we must first come to Jesus, and then believe. Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. It is impossible to claim by faith a blessing that we are not sure God offers because the blessings of God can only be claimed where the will of God is known, trusted, and acted upon. This is not to say that sometimes God does not heal based on others faith, but that he does not promise to heal based on anything other than accepting his son Jesus sacrifice for us on the cross. One phrase many people seem to struggle with and add to their requests `for healing is if it be your will : This phrase, though it sounds humble, inserts doubt as to whether or not it is God s will to heal. Often it is used because people are unsure that it is the will of God to heal or are fearful God will not heal the one being ministered to. People use and justify it because of the phrase in the Lord s Prayer that says, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. They also remember when Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane and prayed Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done. (Luke 22:42). Please note the difference in declaring that God s will be done as opposed to stating that you don t know whether or not it is his will to heal (or) whether or not he will do his will in this particular case. Among those who sought healing from Christ during his earthly ministry, there is only one person who prayed for healing with the words, if it be your will or if you will or if you are willing This was an outcast leper in Mark 1:40 who did not know what Christ s will was in healing. Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched the man. I am willing, he said Be clean! (Mark 1:41). The leper said in effect, if you will, you can. Jesus answered, I will. * Strong s Concordance G 2307, will- thelema; a determination, choice or inclination, desire, pleasure, will. It is crucial to determine that it is always God s will to heal in the scriptures. If it is always his will to heal, people could know he would heal them; but since they are not sure of his will, they continue to bear the cross of their physical suffering and try to be patient and accepting. People reason that the Bible talks a lot about suffering, not realizing that it is not addressing sins and sicknesses, as much as persecutions, afflictions, and hardships. Disease destroys the very body that was bought with a price by the Son of God. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Do you not know your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. Wherever healing is taught as God s provision for all, faith is imparted and people are healed. Faith cannot fail; neither can it be exercised when one is undecided as to whether or not God wills to heal all. If he will not heal all, then we are forced to consider in every single case: I wonder if God wills to heal this one? or, is this one of the unfortunate ones whom God wills to remain sick and to suffer?

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p10 How could we pray the prayer of faith for anyone if it was not his will to heal all?! James 5:14-16 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Another cause for uncertainty that limits some from receiving healing is the questioning of whether or not God will do for you what you know he ll do for others. Awareness of your own lack of faith, feelings of unworthiness, knowledge of your own shortcomings, etc., can cause doubt. With this mentality, we are not recognizing the full extent of the provision of the cross. Sometimes in these cases, not wanting to be presumptuous, people will say that they are waiting for a special revelation of the will of God concerning healing in their case. Again, this belief indicates a lack of certainty of what the scriptures say and reveal as his will. An interesting note is that despite not being sure God wants to heal them, people are doing everything within their own power that they can to get well. They are using every human means medications, doctors, surgery, etc... they do not realize that by their own logic, this would be opposing the will of God if it were not his will to heal them. How inconsistent to think that God might heal them with modern medicine if it is not his will to heal them at all. A careful study of the Bible reveals the will of God about the healing of his children. God need not give any special revelation of his will when he has plainly given his revealed will in his Word. He has declared himself to be the healer of his people, with whom we are included. Exodus 15:26d For I am the Lord, who heals you. Jeremiah 30:17a But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds declares the LORD. Galatians 3:29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Our will also has a part in healing. We need to ask for and receive that which God wills for us. Will we persevere until we receive it? Hebrews 10:35-36 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. John 15:7 If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. Testament, as in the Old and New Testament, means a person s will. The Bible contains God s last will and testament, in which he bequeaths to us all of the blessings of redemption. Since it is his last will and testament, anything later is a forgery. If we wish to know what is in a person s will we must read it. If we want to know God s will on any subject, we must read his will, the Bible. If healing is in God s will for us, then to say that God is not willing would be changing the will, which is clearly illegal. Jesus is not only the testator who died,

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p11 but he is also the mediator of the will, (Hebrews 9:15, 12:24) our advocate, (1 John 2:1-2) and our representative at the right hand of God. He will not beat us out of our inheritance, as some earthly advocates might do. There is no better way to know the will of God than by reading the Gospels, which record the teachings and the works of Christ. Jesus was the physical expression of the Father s will. His life was both a revelation and a manifestation of the unchanging love and will of God that he acted out while he walked on the earth.

Week 1 - Teaching 001.p12 Traditions of Men Taking Precedence Over the Teaching of God Sometimes men, even well meaning men, have believed and taught in error. Below is a list of some traditional teachings that have negative effects on believing for healing: That God sends disease and that he wills the sickness of some. That we glorify God more by remaining sick and exhibiting patience than we do by being divinely healed. That the age of miracles has passed; that God no longer heals today. That it is not God s will to heal all, only some as he chooses. That it is best to add, if it be your will to your prayers. That it is God s will to take them in premature death or that God needed them or that it was his or her time to go. That it s my lot in life to suffer to teach me patience, to refine my character or to cause me to draw near to God. That I cannot expect to be healed from an incurable disease. These traditions of men are wrong! We must not stand by with little more than words of sympathy or pity. We must not let people think that it is God s will to let them suffer and die from sickness, that it will all work out for the best. Let us rather declare war on every form of sickness and take authority over every form of demon power through the name of Jesus. Let us minister deliverance to those in need of healing according to the Word of God. Let us act on the authority of the believer to overcome all the power of the enemy in Christ, lining up our every belief with the Word of God.

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
