The Gospel of MARK, Message #12 Barry L. Cameron Pastor THE UNPARDONABLE SIN (Text: Mark 3:20-35) The Bible is full of examples of God s forgiveness. - When ADAM and EVE sinned, God forgave them. - When ABRAHAM sinned, God forgave him. - When ISAAC sinned, God forgave him. - When JACOB sinned, God forgave him. - When ISRAEL, under the judges and kings repeatedly sinned, God forgave them. Israel s entire history is a history of the forgiveness of God. Psalm 86:5, You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. Psalm 103:2-3, Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases. Daniel 9:9, The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; Exodus 34:6-7, God described Himself to Moses as, The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Micah 7:18-19, Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. The N.T. is also a picture of God s forgiveness: - Ephesians 1:7, In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God s grace. - 1 John 1:9, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. No matter how severe the sin... God can forgive it. - The worst conceivable sin would be to kill God s own Son. Yet, Jesus appealed to God s mercy and forgiveness ( Father, forgive them... ) The volume of sin doesn t affect the possibility of God s forgiveness. - A 70 yr. old reprobate who s lived a life of debauchery, stealing, lying, profanity and immorality is just as forgivable as a 7 yr. old who s done nothing more than normal childhood misbehavior. The particular kind of sin doesn t affect God s mercy, grace or forgiveness. - In the Bible, we find God forgiving idolatry, murder, gluttony, fornication, adultery, cheating, lying, homosexuality, covenant breaking, blasphemy, drunkenness, extortion, and every other kind of sin imaginable. God will even forgive self-righteousness the deceiving sin of thinking you have no sin. - God even forgives the sin of rejecting Christ; otherwise no one could be saved. The rejection of JESUS as the Messiah gradually escalated as He continued His ministry. - First, there was doubt and disbelief. Then criticism, followed by open, defiant rejection.

Page Two The religious leaders of Israel added blasphemy against the Holy Spirit to their rejection of Christ. For centuries, God s people had longed for the Messiah, their Divine Deliverer. - The hope of every prophet and teacher was to live to see Him. - Every Jewish girl dreamed of being His mother. But when Jesus arrived, He was denied and rejected. We pick up the narrative in vs. 20 and see: (1) THE APPREHENSION (Mark 3:20-21) - Jesus went home to Capernaum, most likely to Peter s house and the crowd showed up again. - Mark says, they couldn t even eat. Were people banging on the door? Shouting from outside? We don t really know. - Whatever people were doing, Jesus friends and family went out to try to stop it. - The word for seize means to take custody, like an arrest. They decide to go out and get Him. - Mark tells us they thought He was out of his mind (vs. 21c). John 7:5. His own family didn t believe in Him. - Mary did. She knew what the angel, Gabriel, had told her. - Joseph did. He had a similar experience. Although he was probably dead by now because he isn t mentioned in any of the other gospels. During the first 30 years of Jesus life, Joseph and Mary had a family where there were brothers and sisters who grew up right alongside Jesus. - But He wouldn t have been a Messiah to them. He was their brother. They knew Him when He wasn t doing miracles and wasn t teaching anyone. The one thing they would ve noticed is that He never did anything wrong. He never got in trouble. - That had to bother them a lot. Imagine our Savior surrounded by siblings who were all sinners. - He probably never had to do the dishes or take out the trash or mow the lawn or go to His room. So they hear about what He s doing and the crowds that are gathering. - They come to Capernaum from Nazareth, to see it for themselves. - And when it appears things are starting to get out of hand, they go out and apprehend Him. Verse 21. They say to the people around Him, Excuse us, we need to take Him inside. He s not Himself. He s lost it. He s out of His mind. That leads us to: (2) THE ACCUSATION (Mark 3:22-30) - The Scribes, the religious authorities who had come down from Jerusalem, agreed with Jesus family and said, They re right. This guy is nuts. In fact, He s demon possessed and He s actually working for Satan. - Jesus turned around and said, Wait a minute. You guys come here. He wasn t about to let their accusation go without an answer.

Page Three In Matthew s account (Matthew 12:22-23), Matthew fills in the blanks. - He says a man was brought to Jesus who had multiple problems. He was demon-possessed, blind and dumb. He may have also suffered deafness (often associated with the inability to speak.) This healing demonstrated in one act, Jesus dominion over demons and disease. - He d healed multitudes of people, cast out demons and performed many miracles. However, most of the people remained ambivalent concerning WHO He was and the SOURCE of His power. The people knew miracles would be proof of the Messiah. - But, they also expected royal fanfare and military might. Jesus was quite the opposite: compassionate, humble and gentle. For some reason, this miracle was unusually overwhelming and the people began to ask: Could this be the Son of David? - Son of David was one of the many Scriptural titles for the Messiah. - That was the title ascribed to Him later at His triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:9). That sent the religious leaders over the edge. - They were no longer just skeptical and resentful. They were openly hostile. - It would still be over a year before Jesus would be crucified, but the irrevocable decision to kill Him had already been made. It s reasonable to conclude that Jesus performed this particular healing, on this occasion, for the benefit of the Pharisees, forcing them to make their verdict concerning Him public. - There was no way they could deny the miracle that had just happened. The very idea people might think JESUS was the MESSIAH drove the Pharisees into a panic. - They reacted with the foolish accusation Jesus cast out demons by Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Jesus had denounced them as unrighteous hypocrites and trampled on their human system of traditions. - So, they reacted in a FIERY RAGE with a FOOLISH REASON. In effect, the Pharisees said Jesus was the EXACT OPPOSITE of the Son of David. - Instead, He was the servant of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. - Since they refused to accept that He was from God, they had to attribute His works to Satan. JESUS response is a classic. - He didn t respond with emotion, react with anger, sarcasm or scorn. Instead, he calmly appealed to common sense. Verse 23. He spoke to them in parables. He drew three word pictures everyone would understand. - A kingdom, a house, and a rescue. Each of them serving as a common sense illustration exposing the folly of their accusation.

Page Four (a) A kingdom (vs. 24) A nation fighting against itself won t last. - The Civil War (1861-1865) in America, where over 600,000 soldiers died, threatened to destroy our country. Satan s kingdom isn t divided because Satan isn t fighting against himself. - Common sense would tell you that. (Ever hear about a Mormon church split?) Satan doesn t cast himself out. That s both illogical and impossible. (b) A house (vs. 25) When you get division in a home, it won t last. Everyone knows that. (Common sense) Internal division tears a family apart. - Frustration becomes friction. Friction leads to fighting and, if it s not stopped, that family will be finished. Jesus was saying the household of Satan isn t divided. - The devil has more sense than to oppose himself. Verse 26. If Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. Jesus was saying He wasn t in collusion with the devil; He was on a collision course with him. (c) A rescue (vs. 27) This is a reference to JESUS and would ve included the man Matthew told us about. - The man who was bound by the power of Satan. Satan is the strong man. His house is his current domain. His goods are the souls of men. The only One stronger than Satan and his countless millions of demons was JESUS. There s no admonition in Scripture for us to bind Satan. We can t do that. - 1 John 4:4, Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. (KJV) The real problem here was the religious leaders were in direct rebellion against God. - They knew everything JESUS did and said was in direct opposition to the devil. He d healed sickness and disease, cast out demons, forgiven sin. JESUS point was, How could I do all this unless I had power OVER Satan? - The bottom line: The Pharisees weren t God s representatives. They were God s enemies. (1) THE APPREHENSION (2) THE ACCUSATION (3) THE APPLICATION (Mark 3:31-35) - Jesus said, Truly, I say to you... Better listen up. (He s the only One Who used these words.) - Every sin and blasphemy could be forgiven except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. - This was determined unbelief the defiant refusal, after having seen all the evidence, to believe. And, to go a step further, and attribute the work of JESUS to the devil. This represented an absolute, permanent refusal to believe, which resulted in the loss of opportunity to ever be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Page Five This sin was unpardonable because they refused to walk the path that led to pardon. Verse 30, For they were saying, He has an unclean spirit. - In other words, Jesus is demon possessed and is doing this by the power of Satan. There was nothing else God could do because they refused every witness and ignored all the evidence. - They had the Scriptures in their hands, the Savior in their midst, and the presence and power of the Holy Spirit right there, and concluded it was all the work of the devil. You can t commit this exact sin today because it required JESUS presence on the earth with Him performing miracles through the Spirit s power. - But you can turn your back on God so you permanently cut yourself off from salvation. There comes a time when God turns out the lights. John 3:18, Whoever believes in him (Jesus) is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. Verses 31-33. Jesus family shows up again. What about your family? Verse 34-35. For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother. You don t go to Heaven based on RELATION. You go to Heaven based on SALVATION in CHRIST. Do you know Him today? Are you doing the will of God, in every area of your life? Don t make the mistake of thinking I ve got it made, I made a decision. - I attend the right church. - I own a Bible. - I ve been a Christian for years. - My parents are going to Heaven. - I ve memorized some Scriptures. - I pray before I eat. - I ve done a lot of good things for God over the years. - I m not that bad a person. Listen to the words of Jesus, Whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother. What is GOD S WILL for you today? What is HE SAYING you need to do? - You already know the answer. You just need to do it. Whatever God s Spirit is telling you to do, do it now. - Paul said, Now is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2)
