Communion from the Reserved Sacrament April 19, 2019, 8:15am Then Jesus took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Luke 22:19 Trinity Church The Chapel of All Saints Broadway at Wall Street, New York City

Mission In the spirit of the Gospels, the mission of Trinity Church Wall Street is to build generations of faithful leadership, to build up neighborhoods, and to build financial capacity for holy service in New York City and around the world. Our mission is grounded in our core values. Vision We seek to serve and heal the world by building neighborhoods that live gospel truths, generations of faithful leaders, and sustainable communities. Core Values Faith For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. Matthew 17:20 Integrity Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 Inclusiveness There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28 Compassion When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Matthew 14:14 Social Justice He has showed you what is good; and what the Lord requires of you: to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 Stewardship There will come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt. After them there will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; the famine will consume the world. Genesis 41:29 30 Core Values guide us in carrying out our mission and realizing our vision. By their nature, core values are touchstones for prayer, discernment, ongoing conversation, and action. We seek a deep understanding and ongoing engagement with Trinity s Core Values. Over the years, we will continue reflecting on what our Core Values mean in their application; how they challenge and inform decisions and actions in Trinity s ministries, and how they help our ministries be aligned with our mission and vision. 2

Welcome Please add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome here, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together. If you would like to learn more about The Episcopal Church, or how you can become a member of Trinity Church, please visit www.trinitywallstreet.org/membership. About this Service From the earliest times the Holy Eucharist was not celebrated on Good Friday. In the early Church, receiving communion would have been regarded as breaking the fast that lasted from Good Friday until the Easter Eucharist. Among the Orthodox churches of the East, during Lent the Eucharist is celebrated on Saturdays, Sundays, and feast days, but never on the Fridays in Lent. On other days the liturgy of the Presanctified is celebrated (similar to Communion from the Reserved Sacrament) but not on Good Friday, unless this falls on March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation. From the 7th century the custom developed in the West of receiving communion in both bread and wine from the Sacrament reserved after the Maundy Thursday Eucharist. The Three Great Days continue with the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday at 12:05pm today and concludes with the Great Vigil of Easter on Saturday evening at 8:00pm. Source: The Rev. Bruce W. B. Jenneker Before the liturgy begins, simple candles on the altar are lighted, the bare altar is prepared with corporal spread, a flagon of wine and a paten of bread reserved from the liturgy of Maundy Thursday, chalices and purificators. 3

Anthem of the Cross At the sound of the bell, please stand as you are able. We glory in your cross, O Christ, and praise and glorify your holy resurrection; for by virtue of your cross joy has come to the whole world. May God be merciful to us and bless us, shine the light of God s countenance upon us, and come to us. Let your ways be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. We glory in your cross, O Christ, and praise and glorify your holy resurrection; for by virtue of your cross joy has come to the whole world. BCP p. 281, adapted Confession and Absolution CW p. 78, adapted/bcp p. 352, adapted God s love for us is shown in this: in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Let us show our love for God by confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Silence All All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 4

Comfortable Words Hear the consolation of Scripture to all who truly turn to God. BCP p. 332, adapted Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. John 3:16 The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1:15 If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2 The Lord s Prayer BCP p. 364 All As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. 5

Holy Communion Invitation BCP p. 364 The Gifts of God for the of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. Please come forward to receive communion as directed by the sacristan. Prayer Please stand as you are able. All BCP p. 282, adapted Lord Jesus Christ, Onlybegotten of the living God, we pray you to set your passion, cross, and death between your judgment and our souls, now and in the hour of our death. Give mercy and grace to the living; pardon and rest to the dead; to your holy Church peace and concord; and to us sinners everlasting life and glory; for with God Almighty and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Anthems of the Cross BCP p. 282, adapted/p. 281, adapted O Savior of the world, by your cross and precious blood you have redeemed us: Save us and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. If we have died with Christ, we shall also live with Christ; if we endure, we shall also reign with Christ. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Silence The Ministers and depart in silence. There is no Blessing or Dismissal because the liturgy of the Three Great Days will only conclude at the end of the Great Vigil of Easter. A retiring offering, The Good Friday Offering, is received as the congregation leaves the Chapel. 6

The Jerusalem Cross and the Good Friday Offering The Jerusalem Cross is a major symbol used in Christianity, representing Christ s command to spread the Gospel around the world beginning in Jerusalem. The symbol is composed of 5 crosses; 1 large central cross with 4 smaller crosses in each quadrant. The large central cross represents Christ as the strength at the center of Christianity and the smaller crosses as the 4 corners of the earth to which the faith spread. A cross of this shape was unearthed by a team of American archeologists in the hidden tomb of Baldwin I (c. 1060 April 2, 1118), the first Christian King of Jerusalem, which is why it s called the Jerusalem Cross. The Jerusalem Cross is associated with the Good Friday Offering in The Episcopal Church. The tradition of the Good Friday Offering reaches back to 1922 when, in the aftermath of World War I, The Episcopal Church sought to create new relationships with and among the Christians of the Middle East. From these initial efforts, which focused on a combination of relief work and the improvement of ecumenical and Anglican relations, the Good Friday Offering was created. Through the years many Episcopalians have found the Good Friday Offering to be an effective way to express their support for the ministries of the four dioceses of the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East. Pastoral care, education, and health care continue to be primary ministries through which the reconciling spirit of the Christian faith serves all in need. To make a donation to the Good Friday Offering, please write a check payable to the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society, write Good Friday Offering in the memo line, and mail to: DFMS Protestant Episcopal Church U. S., P. O. Box 958983, St. Louis, MO 63195-8983. Source: The Rev. Bruce W. B. Jenneker 7
