Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou unto ages of ages. Amen. Great Lent starts on March 4th - this is the time in preparation for the Easter- Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. In order to prepare ourselves well it is not enough only to fast and bake the Easter bread and buy meat for blessing of Easter foods but it is more important to prepare our soul by examining our conscience and receiving Sacrament of Confession during Lent. It is more important to teach by a life of doing good than to preach in eloquent terms. St. Isidore of Pelusium Page 3

Sunday of the Prodigal Son - On Repentance Christ the Good Shepherd who came to find the lost sheep calls us all to repentance: Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand (Mt. 4; 17). Without repentance, there can never be salvation nor new life. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, Christ reveals the essence of repentance as a return to the Father and the acceptance of the gift of his forgiveness. In repentance, we come to know God as a loving and merciful Father. He accepts repentant sinners and rejoices at their conversion because He is good and loves mankind. Repentance allows a Christian not only to experience God as a merciful Father, but to rediscover oneself in God s embrace-to see oneself as the son who returned from a foreign land of sin to the father s home of righteousness. On the Sunday of the Prodigal Son the Church sings: As the Prodigal Son I come to You, merciful God. I have wasted my whole life in a foreign land; I have scattered the wealth which You gave me, O Father. Receive me in repentance, O God, and have mercy on me. Repentance has a positive character - it is liberating and life-creating rather than demeaning. It is the force of renewal and rebirth, the fruit of hope, and negation of despair. This is so because repentance is not looking down at one s own faults, but looking up towards the Lord s love; not backwards with self-reproach, but forward with faith. One must focus not on what one has failed to achieve, but on that which, with the mercy of Christ, one may still become. Repentance is a continuous path toward personal healing and growth.it is precisely this kind of constant transfiguring of our lives in repentance that we pray during the divine services; That we may spend the rest of our lives in peace and repentance, let us ask the Lord. Thus repentance is enlightenment, the crossing from darkness to light. Until we see the light of Christ, we will not be able to recognize our own sins. The closer we come to God, the more clearly we see how sinful we are. The light of Christ illumines us and leads us to repentance, to a vision of beauty rather than deformity, to an awareness of God s glory rather than our own destitution. (Catechism of the Ukrainian Catholic Church - Christ Our Pascha.) The Lord greatly loves the repenting sinner and mercifully presses him to his bosom: Where are you my child? I was waiting a long time for you. The Lord calls all to Himself with the voice of the Gospel, & His voice is heard in the entire world. Come to me, my sheep, I created you, & love you, my love brought me to earth, and I suffered things for the sake of your salvation, and I want all of you to know my love, & to say with the apostles on Tabor; Lord it is good for us to be with you. (St Silouan the Athonite) Page 5

Let Your Prayer Come From A Humble Heart: When we pray, our words should be calm, modest and disciplined. Let us reflect that we are standing before God. We should please Him both by our bodily posture and the manner of our speech. One should employ a quiet tone in their prayer. Moreover, in the course of His teaching, the Lord instructed us to pray in secret. Hidden and secluded places, even our own rooms, give witness to our belief that God is present everywhere; that He sees and hears all; that in the fullness of His majesty, He penetrates hidden and secret places. This is the teaching of Jeremiah: Am I God when I am near, and not God when I am far away? Can anyone hide in a dark corner without my seeing Him? Do I not fill heaven and earth? Another passage of Scripture says: The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, observing both good and wicked men. The same modesty and discipline should characterize our liturgical prayer as well. When we gather to celebrate the divine mysteries with God s priest, we should not express our prayer in unruly words; the petition that should be made to God with moderation is not to be shouted out noisily and verbosely. For God hears our heart not our voice. He sees our thoughts; He is not to be shouted at. The Lord showed us this when He asked: Why do you think evil in your hearts? The Book of Revelation testifies to this also: And all the churches shall know that I am the one who searches the heart and the desires. ~St. Cyprian of Carthage Page 6
