Worship Service City Reformed Presbyterian Church Sunday Morning Worship November 11, 2018 Presider: Reverend Joseph Bianco Call to Worship: Philippians 2:5-11 Please stand for the Call to Worship if you are able. Leader Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. People And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Leader Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, People So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Prayer of Invocation 1

Arise My Soul Arise (Words: Charles Wesley 1742; Music: Kevin Twit 1996) Arise my soul, arise, Shake off your guilty fears; The bleeding sacrifice On my behalf appears. Before the throne my surety stands, Before the throne my surety stands, My name is written on his hands. He ever lives above, For me to intercede. His all redeeming love, His precious blood to plead. His blood atoned for every race, His blood atoned for every race, And sprinkles now the throne of grace. Arise Echo: Arise Arise Echo: Arise Arise All: Arise my soul, arise (Repeat) Shake off your guilty fears and rise. Five bleeding wounds he bears, Received on Calvary. They pour effectual prayers, They strongly plead for me. Forgive him, O forgive they cry. Forgive him, O forgive they cry, Don t let that ransomed sinner die. My God is reconciled, His pardoning voice I hear; He owns me for his child, I can no longer fear; With confidence I now draw nigh, With confidence I now draw nigh, And Father, Abba, Father! cry. 2

Sing Hallelujah (Words & Music: Linda Stassen 1974) Sing Hallelujah to the Lord (echo) Sing Hallelujah to the Lord (echo) Sing Hallelujah! sing Hallelujah! Sing Hallelujah to the Lord. Jesus is risen from the dead. (echo) Jesus is risen from the dead. (echo) Jesus is risen! Jesus is risen! Jesus is risen from the dead. Sing Hallelujah to the Lord (echo) Sing Hallelujah to the Lord (echo) Sing Hallelujah! sing Hallelujah! Sing Hallelujah to the Lord. Scripture Reading: Isaiah 45:22-25 Come Ye Sinners (Words: Joseph Hart 1759; Melody: Southern Harmony Folk 1835) Come ye sinners, poor and needy Weak and wounded, sick and sore Jesus ready stands to save you Full of pity love and pow r He is able, He is able He is willing doubt no more Come ye weary, heavy laden Bruised and broken by the Fall If you tarry till you re better You will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous Sinners Jesus came to call. Come ye thirsty, come and welcome God s free bounty, glorify True belief and true repentance Ever y grace that brings you nigh Without money, without money Come to Jesus Christ and buy 3 (continued on next page)

Let not conscience make you linger Nor of fitness fondly dream All the fitness He requireth Is to feel your need of Him This He gives you, this He gives you Tis the Spirit s rising beam. Agonizing in the garden Lo! your Master prostrate lies On the bloody tree behold Him Hear Him cry before he dies It is finished, it is finished Sinner, will not this suffice? Lo! incarnate God ascended Pleads the merit of His blood Venture on Him, venture wholly Let no other trust intrude None but Jesus, none but Jesus Can do helpless sinners good. Saints and angles joined in concert Sing the praises of the Lamb While the blissful seats of heaven Sweetly echo with His name Hallelujah, hallelujah! Sinners here may do the same. 4

Call to Confession: I Peter 5:5-6 Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you... Prayer of Confession Father, you give grace to the humble. But we confess that we are slow to ask and slow to admit our needs. It is easy for us to act as if we don t need mercy even as we judge our friends and neighbors. Help us to see that Jesus is a friend to sinners. We don t ask this so that we can sin more freely. But we ask that you would make us quicker to repent. Give us confidence of the forgiveness we have in Christ. Give us courage to look clearly at our sin and let us know the full weight of forgiveness. Pour out your grace in our hearts that we would overflow into the world around us. We ask this for the glory of Jesus. Amen. Silent Confession Assurance of Pardon: Romans 5:8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Testimony: Emma Blumer Corporate Prayer 5

Song of Renewal During this song we will pass offering bags through the congregation. We ask that our members and regular attendees will thoughtfully consider their contribution as an act of worship - a response to God s grace in our lives. Those who are not a regular part of our church are not expected to participate in the offering. Man of Sorrows (Words & Music: Matt Crocker & Brooke Ligertwood 2012) Man of sorrows Lamb of God By His own betrayed The sin of man and wrath of God Has been on Jesus laid Silent as He stood accused Beaten mocked and scorned Bowing to the Father s will He took a crown of thorns Oh that rugged cross my salvation Where Your love poured out over me Now my soul cries out hallelujah Praise and honor unto Thee Sent of heaven God s own Son To purchase and redeem And reconcile the very ones Who nailed Him to that tree Now my debt is paid It is paid in full By the precious blood That my Jesus spilled Now the curse of sin Has no hold on me Whom the Son sets free Oh is free indeed See the stone is rolled away Behold the empty tomb Hallelujah God be praised He s risen from the grave 6

Pastoral Prayer At this time, children ages 4-7 are invited to continue their worship at Children s Church. The leaders will bring the children to children s church and then back to the worship service after the sermon. Additional Scripture Deuteronomy 7:7-8 / It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Deuteronomy 10:17-19 / For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 1 Samuel 16:7 / But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. Luke 9:58 / And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. John 7:24 / Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment. I Corinthians 1:26-29 / For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 2 Corinthians 8:9 / For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. 7

Sermon: James 2:1-7 Wisdom for Life from the Book of James Rich and Poor - Reverend Matthew Koerber My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, You sit here in a good place, while you say to the poor man, You stand over there, or, Sit down at my feet, 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? Leader This is the Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 8

Notes 9

Creedal Response: Westminster Shorter Catechism Q27. Wherein did Christ s humiliation consist? A. Christ s humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition, made under the law, undergoing the miseries of this life, the wrath of God, and the cursed death of the cross; in being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time. Q28. Wherein consists Christ s exaltation? A. Christ s exaltation consists in his rising again from the dead on the third day, in ascending up into heaven, in sitting at the right hand of God the Father, and in coming to judge the world at the last day. Songs of Thanksgiving Please stand for the final songs if you are able. Joy and Toil (Words & Music: Daniel Snoke & Michael Savisky 2017) Let us not toil unto our own good But give us righteousness and thankful work Remove the mess within us, Restore your wisdom to us Let none be driven into deep despair. Consider God, the works of God. Return the joy to us in all our toil May our work be your delight Return the joy to us in all our toil Let our days be made aright Let not our eyes contend for riches But give us just reward and charity When all our work is weary When we can t see your beauty Help us remember God s hand will endure Consider God, the works of God. 10

Our labor keep away from evil Forgive our discontent and selfish pride Now make our prayers humble And keep our conscience able For God s commandments will our work renew Consider God, the works of God. Create In Me - Psalm 51:10-12 (Words & Music: Keith Green 1984) Create in me a clean heart, oh God, And renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, oh Lord. Take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation. And renew a right spirit within me Prayer Announcements At the beginning of announcements parents are dismissed to pick up their children from nursery.
