Joint Service of Confirmation & Reception into Membership of the Methodist Church By Nicholas Bishop of Leeds & The Reverend Mark Godfrey The Parish Church of St Robert of Knaresborough Pannal 10.00am Sunday 23 rd April 2017

Welcome to St Robert s Church for this morning s confirmation service. Over recent years the Anglican and Methodist Churches have been working more closely together. Following a Covenant Agreement between the two churches in 2003 at both national and Diocesan/District level, our churches here in Pannal have been exploring new ways of expressing our unity. One visible sign of this has been the preparation of our young people for confirmation together. Confirmation classes this year have been led by Revd Mark Godfrey and Revd John Smith At the confirmation itself, the Methodist tradition is for the local minister to lay hands on the candidates whilst the Anglican tradition is for the Bishop to exercise this ministry. This morning both the Revd Mark Godfrey and the Rt Revd Nicholas Bains will lay hands on all the candidates. As the young people receive the grace of the Holy Spirit, they are welcomed into membership of both churches. We pray that, as they grow in faith, so may our two churches grow ever closer together in the unity that comes from the Holy Spirit. Those being confirmed are: Hannah Davies Lucia Davies Ava Edwards Betty French Lily Hagen Niamh Hamshaw Bethan Prytherch Katherine Runcorn Daisy Talbot Harriet Toy Alexander Forbes David Granger James Wild Please spend a few moments before the service praying for them. 2

CHOIR INTROIT LEADING INTO THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN - COME DOWN O LOVE DIVINE Please Stand Come down, O love divine, seek Thou this soul of mine, And visit it with Thine own ardour glowing. O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, And kindle it, Thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn To dust and ashes in its heat consuming; And let Thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, And clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, And lowliness become mine inner clothing; True lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, And o er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, Shall far outpass the power of human telling; For none can guess its grace, till he become the place Wherein the Holy Spirit makes His dwelling. Words & Music in the public domain CCL number 198564 THE GATHERING Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. There is one body and one spirit. There is one hope to which we were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. Peace be with you and also with you. 3

WELCOME by the Bishop COLLECT led by the Bishop Heavenly Father, by the power of your Holy Spirit you give your faithful people new life in the water of baptism. Guide and strengthen us by the same Spirit, that we who are born again may serve you in faith and love, and grow into the full stature of your Son, Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING: Acts 2:14, 22-32 Please sit Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh will live in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One experience corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence. Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us 4

to this day. Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying, He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses. GRADUAL HYMN - SHINE JESUS SHINE Lord, the light of your love is shining In the midst of the darkness, shining Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us Set us free by the truth you now bring us Shine on me, shine on me Shine, Jesus, shine Fill this land with the Father's glory Blaze, Spirit, blaze, Set our hearts on fire Flow, river, flow, Flood the nations with grace and mercy Send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light Lord, I come to your awesome presence From the shadows into your radiance By the blood I may enter your brightness Search me, try me, consume all my darkness Shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine As we gaze on your kingly brightness So our faces display your likeness Ever changing from glory to glory Mirrored here may our lives tell your story Shine on me, shine on me Shine, Jesus, shine Fill this land with the Father's glory Blaze, Spirit, blaze, Set our hearts on fire Flow, river, flow, Flood the nations with grace and mercy Send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light Graham Kendrick 1987 Make Way Music, CCL number 198564 5

GOSPEL READING: John 20:19-31 Please stand for the Gospel reading Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John Glory to you O Lord When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe. A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you O Christ. SERMON By The Right Reverend Nicholas Baines 6

HYMN IN CHRIST ALONE In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone! - who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save: Till on that cross as Jesus died, The arms of love were opened wide - For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine - Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand: Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand. PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATES Sisters and brothers, by grace, through the sign and seal of Baptism, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, we become God s people, the Church. In Confirmation we are strengthened by the Holy Spirit that we may remain in Christ for ever as his faithful servants and witnesses. The candidates are presented to the Bishop and Minister and go forward as their names are read out THE REQUEST FOR CONFIRMATION The bishop says to the candidates At your Baptism into Christ, God offered you the gifts of his grace and has constantly been at work in your life. In this moment God offers to strengthen you by his Spirit and invites you to respond. I thank God, and ask to be confirmed. THE DECISION The Paschal Candle is lit. The Bishop addresses all the candidates In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ. 8

May God who has given you the desire to follow Christ give you strength to continue in the Way. Amen. PROFESSION OF FAITH Please stand. The Bishop addresses the congregation Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess together with these Candidates the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 9

Almighty God, we thank you for our fellowship in the household of faith with all who have been baptized into your name. Keep us faithful to our baptism, and so make us ready for that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. The congregation sits and the candidates stand at the front. CONFIRMATION The Bishop stands before those who are to be confirmed, and says Our help is in the name of the Lord who has made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord now and for ever. Amen. Individually the candidates kneel in front of the Bishop. The Bishop extends his hands towards those to be confirmed and says Almighty and ever-living God, you have given these your servants new birth in baptism by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them all their sins. Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them: the Spirit of wisdom and understanding; the Spirit of counsel and inward strength; the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and let their delight be in the fear of the Lord. Amen. The Bishop invites the congregation to pray for all those on whom hands are laid. The Bishop and Minister then lay hands on the head of each, saying: N, God has called you by name and made you his own. Confirm, O Lord, your servant N with your Holy Spirit. Amen 10

Once all the candidates have been confirmed, we pray Defend, O Lord, these your servants with your heavenly grace, that they may continue yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more until they come to your everlasting kingdom. Amen. COMMISSION The Bishop says I ask you now to respond to God's love and grace by making these promises. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? With the help of God, I will. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? With the help of God, I will. Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? With the help of God, I will. Will you seek and serve Christ in all people, loving your neighbour as yourself? With the help of God, I will. Will you acknowledge Christ s authority over human society, by prayer for the world and its leaders, by defending the weak, and by seeking peace and justice? With the help of God, I will. May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, that you may be rooted and grounded in love and bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. Amen 11

Let us pray together Generous God, touch us again with the fire of your Spirit and renew us by your grace, that we may profess the one true faith and live in love and unity with all who follow Christ. Amen. THE RECEPTION AND WELCOME Those newly-confirmed remain standing. The minister says to them We receive and welcome you as members of both the Methodist and Anglican Churches. The Bishop and ministers of each church and a representative of the local churches extend the hand of fellowship to each newly-confirmed person. The candidates face the congregation. We welcome these young people as members of our fellowship. THE PEACE The Bishop introduces the Peace The two disciples told what had happened on the road to Emmaus, and how Jesus had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Alleluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you We offer one another a sign of that peace OFFERTORY HYMN - O JESUS I HAVE PROMISED During which the collection will be taken in support of our Link dioceses. O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou forever near me, my Master and my friend. I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide. 12

O let me feel thee near me! The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin. O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will. speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; speak, and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul. O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be. And Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend. Words & Music in the public domain CCL number 198564 PRAYERS AT THE PREPARATION OF THE TABLE We remain standing Be present, be present, Lord Jesus Christ, our risen high priest; make yourself known in the breaking of bread. Amen 13

THE LORD S SUPPER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, almighty and eternal Father, and in these days of Easter to celebrate with joyful hearts the memory of your wonderful works. For by the mystery of his passion Jesus Christ, your risen Son, has conquered the powers of death and hell and restored in men and women the image of your glory. He has placed them once more in paradise and opened to them the gate of life eternal. And so, in the joy of this Passover, earth and heaven resound with gladness, while angels and archangels and the powers of all creation sing for ever the hymn of your glory. We sing Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 14

The Bishop recalls the Last Supper We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends And, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, In him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. The prayer continues: Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. 15

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Please sit or kneel to pray Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Bishop breaks the consecrated bread The bread we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. Christ is the Bread of Life. The cup we take is a sharing in the blood of Christ. Christ is the true Vine. The choir sing the Agnus Dei as the bread is broken. 16

GIVING OF COMMUNION Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The newly confirmed receive communion followed by the people CHOIR ANTHEM Come Holy Ghost (Thomas Attwood) Silence is kept. POST COMMUNION PRAYER Gracious God, We thank you that you have nourished us with the bread of life and with the cup of salvation.
