Prophecy By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished. He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. He poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:8-9, 12 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. He trusts in the Lord, they say, let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him. Psalm 22:6-8 I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. The Gospel We lost our honor, righteousness, and power Jesus Christ, the One with perfect honor, righteousness, and power Took our shame, sin, and vulnerability on Himself Gave away to us His honor, righteousness, and power This is His glory! And this is who we are to become We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 10
The Big Idea Disciples must follow Jesus Christ in service and in suffering and then into glory Discipleship is always and ultimately following Jesus. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. Suffering precedes glory, both for Christ and for His followers. 1 John 3:16 11
How could the disciples miss Jesus message? They have seized upon that part of Jesus language which is appealing to them, and ignored the rest. How easily we can do the same! I thought: Jesus suffered so I don t have to. Now I see: Jesus suffered so that my service & suffering is not alone, so that it brings great good, and so that it is followed by glory with Him forever! Two models for prayer and hope Here are the things I want in order to make my life better and the life of the people I love better. James and John Here s what I want. Yet not my plan, but God s plan. Jesus Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. Abba, Father, he said, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. Mark 14:35-36 12
