CANADA InSight Slavic Gospel Association Serving Churches Reaching Russia June 2013 The Gospel at the Crossroads of Asia The Russian regions of Altay and Gorno- Altay are stunning in their beauty. In fact, this small region at the crossroads of Asia is known as Russia s Switzerland because of its tall, snow-capped mountain peaks and clear, emerald rivers and lakes. Yet beyond the physical beauty, Altay is also a region of profound spiritual hunger. Buddhism is strong, and the region s tallest mountain Belukha is believed in local folklore to be the entrance to the paradise of Shambala. It is here where SGA partners help missionary pastor Piotr Lokaichuk labor for the sake of the Gospel, Pastor Piotr Lokaichuk with the town of Novoaltaisk as his base. And his church is active and vibrant! Piotr and his congregation recently dedicated their new church House of Prayer and ordained two new deacons, including his son, Ivan. They often hold outreach services, and last fall their youth went out street witnessing and handing out literature. Piotr has witnessed to many people in prisons, to neighbors, local governmental officials, and people in the marketplaces, giving them Christian literature as they believed and repented. One of Piotr s main ministries is prison outreach. As he relates, the power of God at work in this ministry has been amazing to see... We encountered some difficulties at one of the prisons. A prisoner there, a so-called leader, forbade several people to attend our prison fellowships. Then he committed suicide. Afterward, 10 inmates began to attend our services and several have come to faith in Christ. The prison administration organized a series of lectures on healthy living targeted to drug addicts and alcoholics. They invited us to give lectures, to preach, show documentaries and fellowship with the inmates. We were given a video camera, and they even allowed us to take pictures in the prison!

Together, Pastor Vyacheslav from Yuzhniy and I visited five prisons. More than 150 people attended the meeting in one prison. Some smiled at our words and even laughed, but when they saw the death of a young boy because of drugs, they Vyacheslav s testimony deeply moved even hardened convicts to hear the Gospel. stopped smiling and became serious. I asked them if they are indifferent to the fate of their children. I shared my own testimony with them, and of my own life without God. Then I told them of salvation in Christ. Many of them wept as I prayed. Now, about 20 of the men attend our weekly Bible classes. According to Piotr, women s prisons are not neglected. At one women s prison, more than 30 attended the meetings and many have believed. His church even took up an offering and raised more than $100 to buy Christmas gifts for the women inmates. There were tears as The Gospel and Christian films are a regular offering in this women s prison. Piotr s team distributed the gifts, and they rejoiced in their hearts. Even more, Piotr gave Christian films to the prison officials, and they show the films to the inmates! For Piotr and his church, ministry in this remote region of Russia the crossroads of Asia is difficult, but with rewards that will last for eternity. Their motto is... For whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13). They are thankful to know that SGA partners are with them, praying for them, and providing for their needs. May the Lord bring even more abundant fruit as the Gospel is proclaimed! The life-changing Gospel is not bound even by barbed wire, guard towers and forbidding prison walls. The Power of God for Salvation The history of Russia s Caucasus Mountains region is marred with frequent bloodshed. Murder is a common occurrence. Yet in Kabardino-Balkaria, the Lord is using bold missionary pastors and the support of SGA partners to change the most broken of lives. Pastor Ruslan s ministry is largely focused on prisons, drug rehab centers, and hospitals. He recently shared a powerful testimony... The situation here is difficult. Even in the capital of Nalchik, recently a journalist and the director of the Agricultural Academy were killed. But on one of our regular visits to a medical clinic, I saw a room with four drug addicts. I knew three of them, but the fourth man I did not know he looked very peculiar, with a big beard and an angry look. I have received many death threats from dangerous people, so I stood at the door instead of going in. He glared at me, then pushed me away and went out. I then entered and began to preach. In 10 minutes, the large man came back in and began to shout, Can t you tell us something about the Quran and Muslim belief? I thought he would hit me. But the Lord gave me power and a word from Him. I said, Sit down, my friend, and listen. I will tell you a very important thing. He sat down and listened as I told him about how the Lord saved me. Suddenly, blood began running out of his nose. I asked my assistants to take him to the doctors. In a few minutes, he came back looking miserable and confused. He sat on his bed and began to listen as I called him and the others to repentance. All the people in the ward knelt, and one young Russian boy repented at once. Even the big Muslim man knelt, as the Lord had humbled him. He has not yet repented, but he realized the power of God. The Lord showed us again and again that He is with us! What a tremendous example of God declaring His power just when He is most needed always on time and never late! And Ruslan is living out the Apostle Paul s bold declaration... For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes... (Romans 1:16). Please pray for Ruslan and his church as they continue their faithful outreach in the dangerous Caucasus.

For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints (Hebrews 6:10). As SGA prepares to begin a new fiscal year July 1, we praise and thank God for all that He has accomplished through the Bible-preaching churches you help support across Russia and her neighboring countries. It is hard with limited space to share all that is happening, but this month, we want to encourage your hearts with a pictorial tour of all that you help make possible through your prayers and faithful giving. Bible Training SGA partners have helped train thousands of Bible students for lifetimes of ministry through the four UECB seminaries and two Bible institutes we sponsor in the CIS. The graduates are making an eternal difference in countless lives! Missionary Pastor Sponsorship As the number of evangelical churches increases across the lands of Russia, the need for trained pastors also increases. Today, nearly 350 faithful missionary pastors are faithfully laboring, with many serving and planting more than one congregation at a time. Your prayers and support are a great encouragement to them! Antioch Initiative The SGA-sponsored Antioch Initiative in Russia continues to be a key avenue for North American church coalitions to train Russian pastors, and help strategic, missionary-minded Russian churches reach their regions for Christ! Israel Bible Training SGA s newest ministry opportunity: helping to provide Bible training for Russian-speaking congregations in Israel. We praise God for what He is doing in the land of the Bible! Youth IN Ministry Across the CIS, believing teenagers and young adults are on fire for Christ and intent on reaching their regions for Christ. SGA partners are helping to prepare a new generation of parents, lay ministry leaders, pastors and missionaries. The youth are discipled by their local youth leaders, and are actively using their gifts to share the Gospel. We also help fund periodic national and regional training conferences geared for youth discipleship. Russian-Language Bibles and Literature SGA partners have literally helped us send millions of copies of God s Word and other literature since our 1934 founding nearly 80 years! Just last year, we printed 20,000 more Bibles for distribution in the CIS. The need for God s Word has never lessened! Children s Ministry Compassion Ministry Reaching the next generation for Christ is vitally important! Through SGA-sponsored children s ministries such as Orphans Reborn, Sunday school outreach, summer camps and the Immanuel s Child Christmas ministry, thousands of children have heard the Gospel! As part of their ministries, SGA-sponsored missionary pastors and their churches, also assisted by the Children s Hunger Fund, distribute food and other humanitarian aid to hundreds of poverty-stricken families. Christian love and compassion is opening doors for the Gospel!

CIS in the News... Youth on Mission in Kaluga Editor s Note: The following article from local youth leader Nikolai Nagikh is only a brief excerpt from a report that could make up a whole issue of InSight. It s a wonderful, encouraging glimpse of what young believers in Russia s Kaluga region south of Moscow are doing throughout the year to reach their people for Christ! Our youth decided to dedicate themselves to the spiritual awakening of the Kaluga region. Through events they called Short-Term Mission on a Weekend, they supported churches large and small in their Gospel efforts. They began with two months of planning bathed in prayer. The youth created a special website where they would post information about their plans, as well as a video presentation with invitations to other youth to come and be a part of it. On a nearly weekly basis, they went out with banners calling people to prove their faith by their deeds and not just by words. Then it was off to the small town of Balabanovo! They began with a cleanup project, arriving with garbage bags and gloves, and before long, residents and passersby encouraged them with thanks and approval. Afterward, they went out for street evangelism, then in the evening held an outdoor concert in the square. The whole city heard the Gospel, as the brothers read the story of Jesus, His crucifixion and resurrection. Balabanovo pastor Pavel Mesheryakov told us afterward, Even the most eager atheists stopped to listen and talk, observing that they wanted to live by the same laws as believers. Praise God that they heard the Gospel, because it shows how impossible it is to earn salvation. As I looked at the faces of the young people laboring for the Lord s glory, I saw that they are filled with the same joy as me. I thank God that He is using us as instruments in His work! The youth of Kaluga are bold and joyful in their Gospel witness! Similar events were held later in the year in Khvastovichi and Terebven, and late in the summer, the youth held a hiking trip and invited unbelieving friends. We continue to purchase banners with Bible verses for street evangelism, and DVDs to record Christian programs and movies for distribution. We are thankful for your partnership and your priceless investment in advancing the Kingdom of God! ARMENIA Yerevan AZERBAIJAN IRAN Baku Caspian Sea Aqtau Khirdalan, Azerbaijan No Legal Place to Worship A recent court decision has left the 40,000 people of Khirdalan a suburb of Baku, Azerbaijan without a legal place for the Muslims to worship. The case involved the only previously legal mosque in the city, and the court stripped its legal status this past winter. Earlier, the town s Greater Grace Protestant Church also lost its legal status through court action. Under Azerbaijan s strict religion law (amended in 2009), all religious activity without state permission is illegal and subject to punishment. In a separate matter, the main Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists (UECB) KAZAK UZBEKI church in the capital of Baku is still fighting to get its historic building back. According to Azeri UECB president Ilya Zenchenko, his grandfather constructed the church building, but Soviet authorities confiscated it in 1930. The current government rejected the church s request to have the building returned, saying they already had a church in Baku. Today, the old church has been turned into a theater. This is yet another example of the renewed, intensifying pressure faced by believers across the CIS, especially in regions where Islam is dominant. SGA seeks every opportunity to serve and encourage these believers. The last Bible institute assisted by our partners in Baku concluded in 2008. We are praying for the resources and opportunity to begin Bible training again in Baku, as well as in the republic of Georgia. Sources: Forum 18, UECB How You Can Help The 2013-2014 fiscal year begins on July 1. As always, we look forward with anticipation to the coming months, realizing that so many across Russia and her neighboring countries have yet to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. National governments continue to tighten laws and restrictions on the churches, and global economic turmoil remains an ongoing challenge. Your prayerful support helps SGA continue to provide Bible training, Russian-language Bibles and Christian literature, support for children s summer camps and orphan ministry and so much more. Please continue to prayerfully stand with us for the sake of the Gospel!

Canadian Connection Where could I go, oh where could I go... where could I go, but to the Lord! When you have no place to go, but to the Lord, you are in very good company. Having been detained in Rome because of his faith, the Apostle reminded the Philippian believers that... God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). While this is not a blank cheque to do what we want, it is a wonderful reminder that our Lord is more than able to care for those who are His. Missionary Pastor Stas Petrash, his dear wife, Ludmila, their family, and the other believers in the city of Shuya are very grateful for Pastor Stas Petrash and his family. your faithful prayers and financial partnership. They see the Lord as their ongoing refuge. For some time, Ludmila has suffered from a cyst on her leg. Although surgery would be a good option, by Allan Vincent access to a trustworthy surgeon and funding has forced her and Stas to take this to the Lord. When other believers prayed for Ludmila, the pain decreased, and when the other pastors prayed for her, the cyst dried up. The unsaved husband of one sister recently repented. Although he has cancer, which has metastasized throughout his body, he responded to the Gospel. The Word of God now strengthens and sustains him. Another couple with a son has begun to attend services. Convicted by the Lord of living together, they have registered their marriage, and the father has registered Nikita as his son. Parents of two Christian sisters and one Christian man now come to the church. Another lady who came to services 10 years ago has returned and is open to the Gospel. All of these are answers to prayer and the Lord s blessing on Stas and Ludmila s faithful ministry. Would you consider partnering with them not only in prayer, but financially and joining their ministry team?
