Weekly News 15 th July 2018 www.stpetersharrogate.org.uk St Peter s Church, Cambridge Road, Harrogate, HG1 1PB Getting to know you... Over the Summer we will be featuring some 'getting to know you' articles about a few of the myriad people who volunteer at St Peter s. Sarah Guthrie Sunday Club Leader Sarah Guthrie is the leader of the Sunday Club that takes place for children aged 5-11 during the course of the 9:30 am Family Communion Service on Sundays. For eleven years, Sarah was a full time primary school teacher, working in three different independent schools in London, Surrey and Yorkshire. Three years ago she decided to take a leap of faith and take her career in a different direction; she began working as a self-employed music teacher and academic tutor. Sarah s working week is made up of two mornings as a peripatetic music teacher at Belmont Grosvenor School, an independent prep school in Birstwith, together with lessons to her private pupils (in piano, flute, Maths and English) in the afternoons and evenings. She also accompanies instrumental students for their graded music exams each term. In her spare time, Sarah loves baking, reading, sewing and knitting (as well as playing the piano for pleasure!). If you d like to join the fantastic team of Sunday Club leaders and helpers, please get in touch with Sarah or talk with her after the service. Sunday Club will be taking a break during the School Summer Holiday, but will be back in September.

Sunday Lunch Club Meets Today! It is open to everyone and there s no need to book or bring anything although donations towards the cost will, of course, be very welcome! Lunch today will be served at 1:00 pm. Please speak to Hannah Beck (07503 186455) or Yvonne Dawes (07960 779381) if you need to know more. St Peter's Evening Fellowship The Story of Diamonds The next meeting of St Peter's Evening Fellowship is on Thursday 2 nd August in the Brostoff Hall starting at 7:30 pm. We welcome back Robert Bolton, an expert on diamonds, who ran a jewellery business in Leeds with his father until 2013. Some of you may recall his fascinating talk on pearls last year. Seen here is the Hope Diamond, one of the most famous jewels in the world, once owned by Louis XVI and worn by Marie Antoinette and rumoured to carry a curse... Your support could help disabled people live the life they want Could you spare a couple of hours a week to meet some amazing people at our residential care home, and find out about their goals and aspirations? Disability Action Yorkshire is a charity that supports disabled people in achieving their life aspirations, whatever they may be. We have a range of rewarding volunteering opportunities available to suit people of all ages, and backgrounds - no prior experience is needed! Please get in touch for an informal chat at emmi.wainwright@da-y.org.uk or on 01423 855410, and help us to make a real difference. Amnesty Uk Reunite Refugee Families Petition For many thousands of refugees in the UK, safety from conflict has come at a heavy price. The UK government's strict and unfair rules have forced apart parents from their children, sisters from brothers and elderly parents have had to be left behind in war-torn countries to fend for them selves. The stroke of a pen could reunite these families. To find out more and to sign Amnesty UK's petition asking the Home Secretary to change these rules visit www.amnesty.org.uk/actions/homesecretary-reunite-refugee-families.

Men s Breakfast at St Peter s Saturday 21 st July 2018 Beginning with Morning Prayers at 8:00 am for those who wish to take part, and breakfast from 8:30 to 9:00 am, followed by an informal discussion session in The Gallery for perhaps 30 minutes or so. Please email Bryn Heapy if you are planning to come: brynsusie@hotmail.com or text him on 07561 889076. St Peter's Fundraising Refreshment Days can you help? We are on the lookout for volunteers old and new for our community refreshment days to help us raise valuable funds for our Church. Can you spare a few hours to help prepare and serve our delicious sandwiches, soup and cakes, or clear tables and chat to our customers in the café? We would also love to hear from you if can bake scrumptious cakes and scones or make soup for us to sell in the café. Forthcoming dates for your diary are: Saturday 21st July and Saturday 15 th September. I d love to hear from you if you can help! If you are new to St Peter's and would like to know more about volunteering at these events, then please do get in touch with me, Louise Knight (Louise1knight@icloud.com). A thank you from Sue Abbott Sue thanks everyone for their prayers, phone calls and emails enquiring about her recent hip operation. She says she is making good progress and enjoying the lovely weather. St Peter's Afternoon Fellowship The next Afternoon Fellowship will be tomorrow, 16 th July, and will be a trip to Sophie's Coffee Shop and Bistro in Hampsthwaite for delicious cream teas. Please telephone Gillian Taylor (01423 500482) if you would like to come. Tim Hurren's Retirement Tim Hurren, our Associate Vicar, will be retiring on 16th September. We will be marking this occasion with a Parish Lunch (please note the date) and also a gift to express our thankfulness for all that he has contributed to the life of St Peter's over very many years.
