Amen. Jeremiah 31:31-34 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, Know the LORD, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. 3

Psalm 51:1-13 Miserere mei, Deus BCP-656 (Gregorian Chant sung by the Choir) Tone IV.1 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness; * in your great compassion blot out my offenses. 2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness * and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, * and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you only have I sinned * and done what is evil in your sight. 5 And so you are justified when you speak * and upright in your judgment. 6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, * a sinner from my mother's womb. 7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me, * and will make me understand wisdom secretly. 8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; * wash me, and I shall be clean indeed. 9 Make me hear of joy and gladness, * that the body you have broken may rejoice. 10 Hide your face from my sins * and blot out all my iniquities. 11 Create in me a clean heart, O God, * and renew a right spirit within me. 12 Cast me not away from your presence * and take not your holy Spirit from me. 13 Give me the joy of your saving help again * and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit. Hebrews 5:5-10 Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; as he says also in another place, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. 4

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Gradual Hymn What Wondrous Love Is This? H-439 Wondrous Love The Gospel (please stand) John 12:20-33 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say Father, save me from this hour? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, An angel has spoken to him. Jesus answered, This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. It has long been the custom at St. John s Church for the congregation to be seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. ANNOUNCEMENTS Music in Today s Liturgy: Today is the Fifth Sunday in Lent. As is our practice at St. John s, all of the music used in the liturgy, whether congregational, choral, or instrumental, is selected to coordinate with the themes of the prayers and lessons. Our Processional Hymn, O God of Bethel, relates to the Old Testament Lesson (Jeremiah31). The Gradual Hymn, What Wondrous Love Is This? relates to the Gospel Lesson (John 12), as does the Retiring Procession, Lift High the Cross. The choir will chant the appointed Psalm 51 in a Gregorian Chant setting. The Offering Anthem is a setting of two verses (in antique English) from Psalm 51. The music is by Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876) an English organist who was famous in his lifetime as one of his country's leading organists and choirmasters. He composed almost exclusively for the Anglican Church which continues to cherish his memory. This is one of his best-known anthems. The Communion Motet, a well-known Communion text, is also a well-known musical setting by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). It was composed in the last year of his brief life.the Organ Prelude is not specifically a sacred piece, but the mood is appropriate for today s solemn themes. It is a transcription for organ of an orchestral work by H. Walford Davies (1869 1941), an English composer, organist, conductor and educator who held the title Master of the King s Musick from 1934 until 1941. The Organ Postlude is a setting of a German Chorale If the hour of my death is at hand, And I must travel on my way, Accompany me, Lord Jesus Christ. The setting is marked Pro organo pleno (for full organ), and is by Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780), a student of J. S. Bach who was unrivaled, except by Bach, in organ proficiency during his lifetime. St. John s Choir will have lunch (provided by the management for the CHOIR!...) following this morning s Holy Eucharist; then they will have a special rehearsal of all the music for Palm Sunday (March 25), Maundy Thursday (March 29) Good Friday (March 30), Easter Vigil (March 31) and Easter Sunday (April 1). That s a big commitment on the part of the choir, and a lot of music to prepare. Please offer your encouragement and support to the choir singers. 7

Concerning the Choir: If you are interested in joining us, or if you know of someone who might be interested, please see Minister of Music, Bill Clisham, immediately after the Postlude or at Coffee Hour. No auditions are required, but a get acquainted meeting with Bill is necessary for placement and music assignment. Rehearsals are every Sunday morning at 9:00 AM prior to the 10:30 AM Choral Eucharist. There are no scheduled mid-week rehearsals apart from Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We served 42 people this week. The March calendar is posted on the office door so volunteers can sign up. 3/6 Sue, 3/13 Aud, 3/20 Fr. Scott, 3/27 Bonnie and Rick.
