SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION NEXT SUNDAY S GOSPEL READING SAINT OF THE WEEK SEBASTIAN, MARTYR JANUARY 20 MARK 1:14-20 After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. FAITHFUL WITNESSING TO CHRIST To enter the kingdom of God we must endure many tribulations. If there are many persecutions, there are many testings; where there are many crowns of victory, there are many trials of strength. It is then to your advantage if there are many persecutors; among many persecutions you may more easily find a path to victory. Take the example of the martyr Sebastian, whose birthday in glory we celebrate today. He was a native of Milan. At a time when persecution either had ceased or had not yet begun or was of a milder kind he realized that there was only one slight, if any, opportunity for suffering. He set out for Rome, where bitter persecutions were raging because of the fervor of the Christians. There he endured suffering; there he gained his crown. He went to the city as a stranger and there established a home of undying glory. If there had been only one persecutor, he would not have gained a martyr s crown. "Saint Sebastian" by Sodoma, 1525 The persecutors who are visible are not the only ones. There are also invisible persecutors, much greater in number. This is more serious. Like a king bent on persecution, sending orders to persecute to his many agents, and establishing different persecutors in each city or province, the devil directs his many servants in their work of persecution, whether in public or in the souls of individuals. Of this kind of persecution Scripture says: All who wish to live a holy life in Christ Jesus suffer persecution All suffer persecution; there is no exception. Who can claim exemption when the Lord himself endured the testing of persecution? How many there are today who are secret martyrs for Christ, giving testimony to Jesus as Lord! The Apostle knew this kind of martyrdom, this faithful witnessing to Christ; he said: This is our boast, the testimony of our conscience. They will join young people in churches across the country to collect money for those who are hungry and hurting. In 2011, $9.6 million was collected by Souper Bowl of Caring participants for local charities. All of the money collected is donated to a charity selected by the participant - none of the money is sent to the Souper Bowl of Caring headquarters. We ask all parents and youth to practice safety at all times during drop off and pick up times. Please help to keep our children safe. Thank you. Theresa D. Fitch, DRE How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me? Psalm 116:12 JANUARY 21 22, 2012 Stewardship is a way of life... It is a comprehensive concept, recognizing that we respond to God's generosity, not because we have to, but because God's own goodness draws us to respond. Every good thing we have - even our very lives - comes to us from God. And it doesn't come in an unlimited fashion. The gifts we have received are loans to us, from God, to be used according to His plan. If you doubt that, take a moment to think about what "possessions" you are going to bring out of this world with you! Stewardship extends to all facets of life: how we care for and use our time and talents, how we care for and use the goods of nature and how we care for and use the treasures we have been given, whatever those treasures may be. Jesus reminds us that God will not be outdone in generosity and that any sacrifice we make in His service will be rewarded 100-fold in this life and eternal life in the next. Fr. Winslow will address the congregation regarding stewardship of time and talents the weekend of January 21st and January 22nd. UT IN OMNIBUS GLORIFICETUR DEUS! PAGE 5

REPORTING MINISTRY-RELATED ABUSE OF A MINOR All cases of alleged, known or suspected ministry related sexual abuse of a minor must be reported to the proper civil authority. Any person having actual knowledge of, or reasonable cause to suspect an incident of ministry related sexual abuse by any church personnel of the Diocese of Charlotte is to immediately report the incident to the Chancery, unless to do so would violate the Sacrament of Penance. The Chancery will then report the incident to the proper civil authority. After notifying the proper civil authority, the Chancery will immediately notify the Assistance Coordinator, the Promoter of Justice, and the Review Board. Following this, the individual reporting the incident to the Chancery will be notified of the particulars regarding the filing of the incident with the civil authority. This reporting requirement is not intended to supersede the right of a victim or witness to individually make a report to public authorities, but is to ensure proper, complete and timely reporting to the proper civil authority. At the time of reporting, the diocese will request to be kept informed as to the progress of that authority s investigation. Should an individual choose to make a report to civil authorities, the requirement to make a report to the Chancery is not removed. You may make a report of sexual misconduct by calling the Chancery at 704-370-6299, or by writing to: Chancellor Diocese of Charlotte PO Box 36776, Charlotte, NC 28236. At the time of reporting an incident alleged sexual misconduct to the Chancery, the person making the report will be asked to complete the diocesan form: Report of Suspected Ministry Related Sexual Misconduct by Church Personnel. INVITATION FROM BISHOP PETER JUGIS This year, men from the Diocese of Charlotte are organizing the 2 nd Annual Charlotte Catholic Men s Conference, Being a True Catholic Man. The theme is Take Courage and will be held February 18 th from 8:00am until 4:30pm at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy., Charlotte. During the day, in addition to national and local speakers, participants can receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and attend Mass at 11:00am celebrated by Bishop Jugis. The mission of the conference is to focus on the sacraments and feature national Catholic speakers who pointedly challenge participants to grow in their Catholic faith, deepen their relationship with Christ, and live up to their callings as Catholic men, husbands and fathers. The organizing of the event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus for both Knights and non-knights. The Charlotte Catholic Men s Conference is an important evangelizing effort in our diocese.
