RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS REFLECT In this Sunday's Gospel, the conflict escalates in the Bread of Life Discourse. Confusion is mounting in the crowd. "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Their minds were thinking literally, not mystically. Jesus doesn't seem to help, however, and only drives his point home with more emphasis. "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you." Jesus would later institute the Eucharist at the Last Supper. There he would definitively establish the sacramental reality in which bread and wine become substantially his own Body and Blood. We celebrate this sacrament in the Mass. Perhaps we do not always understand what we receive. "My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink." What is the essence of food and drink? Food nourishes our bodies, providing essential calories for our survival. Water is used throughout the body to cushion joints, regulate body temperature, and protect sensitive tissues like the brain. When we receive the Eucharist, we receive the spiritual equivalent of these essential elements. Like water, the Eucharist strengthens the sanctifying grace moving through us. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him." The Eucharist connects us intimately to Jesus and confirms our union with him. That is why we abstain from the Eucharist while in a state of mortal sin. It would be a contradiction and deep disrespect to these words of Jesus. To receive the Body and Blood of Jesus is not a right but a gift we receive with deep humility. As we receive the Bread of Life, grace strengthens our love, separates us from sin -- even wiping away venial sins -- unifies us with the universal Church, and helps commit us to humble service. Together we are nourished for our mission in the world! CCD REGISTRATIONS: There will be CCD registrations held on Saturday, August 18th at 9 am at Holy Family Church in the CCD Office, and Sunday, August 19th after the 10:30 am Mass at St. Bernard Church in the Religious Education Office. Please bring previously mailed registration forms, or come in for new forms. If your child is new to the program, please bring a copy of their baptism certificate. CCD Teacher Meeting: There will be a Catechist Meeting on Tuesday, August 21st from 6-8 pm in Fr. Kerwan Hall. All catechists should plan to attend. Dinner will be served, and Loyola Press will join us for a presentation on the new Religious Education text books we will be using. We will also discuss upcoming catechist training dates. CCD Office Staff and Crossing Guard Meeting: We will have a brief meeting on Monday evening, August 27th at 6:30 pm at St. Bernard School, located at 232 Pearl Street. All CCD Office Staff and Crossing Guards should plan to attend. WOMEN S ACTS RETREAT The South Windsor Catholic Community St. Junipero Serra Parish is sponsoring a Women s ACTS retreat September 20th - 23rd at My Father s House in Moodus, CT. The ACTS retreat is a three day, three night Catholic lay retreat presented by women. This is a simple, reverent, Catholic retreat that begins on Thursday evening, September 20th and will end on Sunday, September 23rd with a morning Mass and reception. For detailed information visit actsct.org or contact MaryAnn Harris at 860-280-7798. ADORATION GOD S CALL, YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF, AND RESPONSE TO GOD. COMMUNITY LOVE AND CARING FOR EACH OTHER. THEOLOGY STUDYING GOD THROUGH SCRIPTURE AND OUR CATHOLIC FAITH. SERVICE TO GOD AND HIS PEOPLE. FROM FR. GOLAS, I want to update you on the progress of the roof replacement over Fr. Kerwan Hall and adjacent areas at Holy Family Church. In mid- July, the Parish received permission to proceed with the project with Allied Roofing & Sheet Metal contracted for the work from Archbishop Blair. A requirement of the permission was a review of the contract by the diocesan attorneys. Since then, the attorneys of the diocese and Allied have been in contact about various provisions of the contract. It has involved several exchanges with clarifications. Before receiving the permission, it was recommended that we hire a consultant to advise on the project. Patrick Moore, an architect from Manchester has been retained on a limited basis to assist us with this project. I am hoping the contract will be ready to sign shortly. We have been working to clarify and settle all issues. I have expressed my concern to the diocesan attorney of the urgency of this project. In addition, I have made an effort to keep the Parish facility members informed of the status of the project. I would like to commend our maintenance staff, Greg and Jim, for keeping track of and handling the expanding leaks that are occurring as well as their efforts to help get this project under way. When I have more definite news, I will let you know. I am pleased to announce that Pat Keck has volunteered to become the Parish coordinator for worship and Parish life. This involves all aspects related to liturgy with the Eucharist being the most important liturgy that is celebrated in the Parish continuously. It would also include para liturgies and other sacramental services. Pat will coordinate the various ministries that serve the Parish at Mass. In addition, she will be the liaison between the various groups and ministries and me. I found this past year hectic trying to keep up with the activities, committees and scheduled events that occur in this critical area of Parish life. I want to thank Pat for offering her time and energy to this important ministry. Pat has also agreed to undertake further study through the Office of Education, Evangelization, and Catechesis of the Archdiocese (OEEC). This office has a formation program called Elm leadership. This program involves Evangelizing Catechesis, Lifelong Formation, and Missionary Discipleship. The program provides the human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral formation for those in ministry. Courses are offered through Catholic universities. I want to thank Pat for her willingness to undertake this role of lay ministry on behalf of our Parish. We can all pray for God s blessing for Pat s generous spirit of commitment.

CHILDREN S PAGE Welcome to the Children s Page! We encourage the children of our Parish to take the bulletin home, color the picture, put their name and age on it and place it in the collection basket the following week. We will hang the pictures in the vestibules of Holy Family Church and St. Bernard Church. We hope all our younger parishioners will have fun coloring while learning about the Gospel! The St. Bernard School and Little Angels Pre-School page will return on August 26th. Open Enrollment is available for grades K-8 for the 2018-2019 school year. If you are looking for a family community, warm and nurturing environment where your child will succeed academically, spirituality, socially and emotionally, call for a tour and we will be happy to show you what SBS has to offer your child and family. Tuition assistance available to families. Do not let cost stand in the way of your child's future success! Private tours are available. Call us at 860-745-5275. We would love to meet you and your child. We are accepting applications for 2018-2019. Name: John 6:51-58 Age:
