Talk One The Gift of a New Identity 1 Peter 1:1-2 KEY IDEA: If we want to live faithfully as Christians in this world, we need to embrace our identity as resident aliens chosen aliens, known aliens, sanctified aliens and loved aliens. Puzzle piece that doesn t quite fit. We are resident aliens. Chosen Aliens. Known Aliens. 10

(Talk One) (The Gift of a New Identity) Sanctified Aliens. Loved Aliens. Application 1. Not a Christian put your trust in the death of the Lord Jesus. 2. Christian who always feels like they fit in. 3. Christian who never feels like they fit in. 4. Christian who sometimes feels like they fit in (and sometimes they don t). 11

Study One The Gift of a New Identity Read 1 Peter 1:1-2 Discuss Can you tell a story of a time when you felt like you didn t fit in because you were a Christian? How did you deal with it? Do you feel comforted by the truth that in his love God chooses people even you to be a part of his people? If you are a Christian when you became a Christian, did you feel like God s Spirit was working in your life - sanctifying you - to bring you to trust in Jesus? What were the signs that this was happening? 12

(Study One) (The Gift of a New Identity) In your own words, can you explain why it is necessary to be sprinkled with Jesus blood to be a part of God s people? If you are absolutely honest, would you prefer to be rejected by God and accepted by people, or rejected by people and accepted by God? Can you think of anything from this passage that you could share with someone you know either Christian or not? How might you share this? Spend some time praying for each other. 13

Talk Two The Gift of a New Hope 1 Peter 1:13-2:3 KEY IDEA: Set your hope on the grace that you will receive when Jesus returns and it will completely transform how you live now. Our hopes and dreams shape how we live now. 1. Set your hope on God s grace to you in the future (v. 13). 2. If you set your hope on God s grace to you in the future, you will a. Obey God (vv. 14-16). 14

(Talk Two) (The Gift of a New Hope) b. Fear God (vv. 17-21). c. Love God s Family (1:22 2:1). d. Grow as God s Child (2:2-3). 3. This new hope should drive your life. 15

Study Two The Gift of a New Hope Read 1 Peter 1:13-2:3 What hopes and dreams do you have for the future? Can you see how your hopes and dreams influence how you live now? OBEY: In what ways would you say you are similar or dissimilar to your biological parents? As one of God s children, in what ways are you like or unlike your Heavenly Father? What things about your Heavenly Father might make you to want to be like him? FEAR: In vv. 17-21, what two reasons does Peter give for living our lives in reverent fear of God? Do you think your life shows that you respect and fear your Heavenly Father? 16

(Study Two) (The Gift of a New Hope) LOVE: How do you go with loving your brothers and sisters in God s family genuinely? What makes it easy or difficult? What should empower us children to love each other even when it s hard? GROW: How does Peter say Christians grow up in their faith? What can you do practically to feed on God s Word? What do you tend to do when you don t crave God s Word? Can you think of anything from this passage that you could share with someone you know either Christian or not? How might you share this? Spend some time praying for each other. 17

Talk Three The Gift of a New Life 1 Peter 2:4-12 KEY IDEA: Come to Jesus as your cornerstone and by God s grace will find a completely new life you will have a new identity, community and mission Your life as a house. 1. Jesus is the cornerstone in God s house (v. 6). 2. The builders who reject Jesus as their cornerstone (vv. 7b - 8). a. Rebel b. Religion 3. Consequences of rejecting Jesus (v. 8b). 4. Come to Jesus as your precious cornerstone (v. 7a). 5. New Identity: you are connected with Jesus (v. 4). 18

(Talk Three) (The Gift of a New Life) 6. New Community: you are connected with Jesus people (v. 9a). a. Chosen b. Holy Nation c. God s Treasure d. Royal Priesthood 7. New Mission: you are connected with Jesus mission (vv. 9b 12). a. Serving b. Speaking c. Living 19

Study Three The Gift of a New Life Read 1 Peter 2:4-12 Discuss Who is the cornerstone in God s house? Can you remember the two ways in which people can reject Jesus as their cornerstone? What do you think might motivate you or others to build your lives around something other than Jesus? How does someone who has come to Jesus as their cornerstone relate to him, or feel about him? If Jesus is your cornerstone, what are the positive and negative aspects of your new identity? How do you feel about this? 20

(Study Three) (The Gift of a New Life) What aspects of the identity of your new community do you find most encouraging or challenging? - Chosen People - Royal Priesthood - Holy Nation - People Belonging to God Can you think of any practical ways that you could get involved in your new mission by: - Serving for Jesus - Speaking for Jesus - Living for Jesus Spend some time praying for each other. 21

Quiet Time Intro 22 What is a Quiet Time? It is the time set aside each day or regularly, to meet with God. God wants to speak to us (through Bible reading) and He wants us to speak to Him (through prayer). Quiet time is not a duty or a commandment, but a privilege and response to God s love for you. Psalm 19:10, says this about God s words, They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. As you read and meditate upon God s word, you will be encouraged and strengthened in your faith. This year, we will use S.O.A.P. S.O.A.P. is a method of Bible reading and study. It can be used with any daily Bible reading plan, and while we re at East Camp we want to introduce it to you. This will give you an opportunity to learn a simple system that you will be able to use when you get home, through the year, and maybe for many years to come. S for Scripture Open your Bible to today s reading. Pray that God will help you understand this section, then take some time to read through it carefully. Look through the rest of S.O.A.P. and then read the Bible section again. O for Observation What struck you and caught your attention in what you read? What do you think God was saying to the original readers? What are the key words in this passage? Is there a main theme? Write down these thoughts. A for Application Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Is it some instruction, or encouragement? Have you learned something wonderful about God? Does it reveal something about your life? Write how this scripture can apply to you today. P for Prayer This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or it may be a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Spend some time praying, and then write a brief prayer.

Quiet Time One Scripture - Pray that God will help you, then read: Ephesians 2:1-10 Observation - What did you observe in this section? (What words are repeated? What is the main thing happening here? What else do you see in this section? What questions do you have?) Application - What applies to your life? (Who are we? Who do we belong to? Does it matter what you think of Jesus? Why? What do you think of Jesus? How do you come to this conclusion? Are there other applications for your life?) Prayer - Write a short prayer. 23

Quiet Time Two Scripture - Pray that God will help you, then read: Titus 2 Observation - What did you observe in this section? (What words are repeated? What is the main thing happening here? What else do you see in this section? What questions do you have?) Application - What applies to your life? (Who are we? Who do we belong to? Does it matter what you think of Jesus? Why? What do you think of Jesus? How do you come to this conclusion? Are there other applications for your life?) Prayer - Write a short prayer. 24

Leaders Unmasked On our training day the leaders were asked if you could swap faces with anyone in the world - living, dead or fictional, who would it be? We ve listed their answers below but because Josh is lazy they don t have leaders names attched to them. Talk to the leaders and match them to the face they d like to have. Smaug Psyduck Gandalf Ned Kelly Pocahontas Nicole Kidman Road Runner Abraham Lincoln Wolverine Darth Maul Voldemort Chewbacca Harry Potter Effie Trinkett The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) Brian Harvey 25
