Yes, work on the sidewalks is scheduled to begin this week. Our goal is to make it safe for people who walk around the Church and Academy. Ozanam Hall 22nd Annual Rose of Carmel Benefit The Ozanam Geriatric Foundation is delighted to be celebrating the 22nd Annual Rose of Carmel Benefit, honoring the Most Reverend Raymond F. Chappetto, D.D.., V.G., V.E., Vicar General of the Diocese of Brooklyn and Pastor of St. Kevin R. C. Church with the Rose of Carmel Award. This event will be held on Friday, May 3rd, at North Hills Country Club. April 21, 2019 Easter Sunday of the Resurrec on of the Lord Page 6 Expect the Unexpected We all know what to expect of Easter: lots of lilies around the altar, our Alleluia joyfully sung over and over, perhaps a tasty ham dinner later in the day, topped off by some chocolates from the Easter basket. But all of this began, as we hear in today s Gospel, with the unexpected when Mary Magdalene found the tomb empty. Indeed, Peter s speech from Acts in the first reading could insert the phrase you might have expected at a number of points... that Jesus would baptize John, not the other way around... that his healing and exorcising ministry would win him acclaim, not death... that his resurrection would place him in another dimension, not back at table with his followers. On a day like Easter, a day filled with traditions, customs, and expectations, we are called more than ever to keep looking for God s will in unexpected places, people, and events. In this way we can continue to give witness, like Mary Magdalene and Peter, that Christ is truly risen from dead, and continues to live among us. The Easter Octave Eastertime lasts fifty days: seven weeks of seven days (seven equals Biblical perfection) plus one day: perfection plus! The Church celebrates the Easter Octave: the marriage of heaven and earth, as the Vigil calls Jesus resurrection; our new members baptismal rebirth; our renewal of baptismal vows; our hearts divine vacation (Latin vacare, to be empty ), new found time and space for love of God and neighbor. Adorn the dining table with a pillar candle (your paschal candle ), a bowl full of water (ideally, from the parish s baptismal font), a vase of flowers or bowl of sprouting grain with Easter eggs. Even non-singers can handle the three-fold Gospel Alleluia! Let that be your grace before meals, perhaps with a prayer recalling Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35): Be known to us, Risen Lord Jesus, as you were to the first disciples, in your word, in the breaking of bread, and in everyone we meet. Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?
