AUMC Catch the Spirit Alpha United Methodist Church Pastor Terry Evans 211 Scandia St., PO Box 607, Alpha, IL 61413 April 2013 Volume 2013 Issue 4 Growing up as a child of the seventies I fondly remember watching Gilligan s Island and now many years later I look back on some of the episodes and see the real story hidden in the humor. There were very few of these episodes that you could consider emotionally touching. But I do remember one. Gilligan had gotten his feelings hurt and decided to move away to the other side of the Island to live alone in a cave. Immediately, this became a miserable existence for Gilligan he was all alone. But also miserable for everyone else on the island one of their own was no longer among them, in fellowship with them...and there was a terrible void. They missed him at the dinner table. They missed his jokes, his laughter, and his gentleness. They even missed his clumsy screw-ups. I think at one point in the episode they were sitting around the dinner table taking turns talking about the specific things they missed about him. So what did they do? I think it began with Skipper. He decided to leave the rest and go live with Gilligan so he wouldn t be alone. Then another person did the same and then another. Until finally, all seven people were together again on the other side of the island in Gilligan s cave. In true spiritual community, we either make it together, or we don t make it...at least not in a healthy way. This month with the help of the Worship Committee and you we are focusing on our gifts, friends and family with special Theme Sunday s each week. I pray that each of us celebrates the blessings that God has been providing to us for opportunities to minister and grow as a community of believers. 12 This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than to give up one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I don t call you servants any longer, because servants don t know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because everything I heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You didn t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you could go and produce fruit and so that your fruit could last. As a result, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. 17 I give you these commandments so that you can love each other. John 15:12-17 CEB See ya in Church! Pastor T.

Page 5 Joylines Volume 2013 Issue 4 New Bible Study - Lindi Kernan's house Begins Wednesday, April 3, 6:30-7:45 When Godly People Do Ungodly Things - Beth Moore A message of warning, protection and restoration. The goal is to understand how whole-hearted, sincere, and purely devoted followers of Christ can be seduced by the enemy. Through the study we will examine ways to seduceproof our lives so that we are protected from the enemy's schemes. Finally, we will see in Scripture that there is hope and restoration for any believer who truly repents. The first week will be the introduction followed by six weeks of study. There are workbooks which will require daily individual study. Each week we will watch a video and discuss the weeks study. Each session will last 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Each workbook is $13 and scholarships are available. Contact Lindi Kernan if you plan to participate in the study. It's time for April Showers to make our kitchen supplies grow! We are doing some great mission work out of our kitchen and are finding there are some things we need to help us with this work. So, the outreach committee is having a kitchen shower! There will be a list of items needed. Some can be purchased or you can donate money for the Outreach Committee to purchase items that must be bought at specialty stores. A list of items and prices will be available at church or it can be emailed or mailed to you. Contact Lindi Kernan for the list. 629-9924 or dlkernan@divcominc.net All items should be left at the church and monetary donations can be put in the offering plate in an envelope. It should be marked "kitchen shower" and note the item you wish to purchase. A master list will be posted at the church and on the church website so all will know what has been purchased and what is still needed.

Page 6 Joylines Volume 2013 Issue 4 Starting April 7, 2013, there will be "Worship Buddies" for kids during church. These bags will be hanging outside the sanctuary before worship and clearly labeled 3/6 for children 3 to 6 years old and also 7/12 for children 7 to 12 years old. Each Worship Buddy Bag contains: simple snacks, coloring page and crayons and a Children's Bulletin that will allow our children to follow Pastor Terry's message while doing some creative things (dot to dot activity, word searches, crossword puzzles, "can you find" activities) and other great fun! These bags were created by the Worship Committee to allow our children to participate in church and have fun while learning about Jesus. Parents are encouraged to place bags back on the rack after worship so that they will be refilled for the following week and enjoyed by other children. The Worship Committee would like to thank Dave and Linda Lambin for their generous contribution for creating the rack and also embroidering the Worship Buddies for our children! Without their assistance, this project would not have been possible. COLLEGE BOXES It is time to help our college students have snacks while they study for finals. There is a box in the fellowship hall to drop off your donations. Sample items include: granola bars, chips, cookies, candy, gum, popcorn, microwave Mac N Cheese or any other snack you can think of. You can also write them a note of encouragement or scripture or even a joke, just to let them know that we are thinking of them. We have 5 students to mail to this time. THANKS for donations. The box will be there thru Sunday April 28 and will be mailed out on Monday April 29.
