Devotion NT300 CHILDREN S DEVOTIONS FOR THE WEEK OF: Silas LESSON TITLE: Timothy Joins Paul and THEME: Love for God will cause us to live for God. SCRIPTURE: Acts 16:1-5

Dear Parents Welcome to Bible Time for Kids! This is a series of daily devotions for children and their families. Our purpose is to supplement our Sunday morning curriculum and give you an opportunity to encourage your children to develop a daily devotional life. We hope you and your family will be blessed as you study God s Word together. This week the lesson was Timothy Joins Paul and Silas. The theme was Love for God will cause us to live for God. When someone loves something in life, then their life will usually reveal what it is they love. As Christians, we love God because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). When we love Him with all of our hearts then we will live for Him. This week in our devotions we will learn about how we can live for God. When our lives reveal Jesus Christ others are attracted to Him. Jesus gets all the glory, not us! What a blessing that must be to Jesus. The section of scripture that we studied was Acts 16:1-5. The following five devotions are based on either the scripture and/or the theme for Sunday s lesson. As a starting point it would be good for you to review these verses with your children. These devotions are designed to help you reinforce Sunday s lesson throughout the week with your children, provide some more ideas for the application of God s Word in your children s lives and provide a tool to help in family devotions. Obviously children at various age levels will respond to the devotional in different ways. You may want to add your own ideas to these to make them more age appropriate. May the Lord bless you as you study His Word together!

Day One Take a Stand for God Text: 2 Kings 23:25 Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might. Also read Matthew 22:37-38 and 2 Chronicles 34:1-33 Josiah was eight years old when his father died and he became king. Josiah s father was a cruel and evil man. He did not follow God. Josiah s grandfather was also a wicked man but later in life, he turned towards God. Perhaps Josiah grew to know God through the life of his grandfather. Everyone around Josiah was an idol worshipper. Carved images made out of wood were their god. Josiah was different because he turned his heart, soul, and might over to God. He loved God very much. His love for God caused him to live for God. Josiah took a stand before a lot of people who did not know God. He was not ashamed or embarrassed about letting others know that he loved God. King Josiah had his servants destroy all the idols and the places of idol worship in the land of Judah. He wanted to repair the temple so he and his people could worship God. Nothing could stand in the way of King Josiah s heart to please the Lord. Josiah was a good example to his people because he worshipped God instead of idols. By destroying all the idols, he encouraged the people to worship God. Perhaps you are the only one in your neighborhood who has accepted the Lord or the only Christian in your class at school. You may be the only Christian others see. That means you must be a leader when it comes to the things of the Lord. Perhaps at times you may think, I can not read my bible in front of my friends next door because they will make fun of me or I can t talk about Jesus at school the other kids will make fun of me. Whatever the situation might be, you need to remember 1 Corinthians 16:13, 14: Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love. How old was Josiah when he became king? What right thing did he do? How can you show your love for God? Kid s Bible Dictionary Taking a stand: To take a stand for God means to be brave enough to do what God wants you to do, even when no one else is.

Day Two Obedience Shows Our Love Text: 1 John 2:5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know we are in Him. Also read 1 John 2:15-17 I didn t touch it! Scouts honor! replied David. David s mother had just asked him if he was the one who was playing with the computer. Mrs. Mello, David s mother, was typing a report that was due the next day for work. One of the rules in the Mello s home was to never touch the computer if someone else was working on it. Unfortunately, someone attempted to install a game and somehow lost Mrs. Mello s report. The only problem with David s story is that David and his mother were the only two at home at the time. David has lied before and Mrs. Mello had a feeling that David was not being honest. The truth is that David really did lie to his mother. His friend, Larry, loaned him a new computer game. David could not wait and temptation overcame him. So he tried to install the game without his mom s OK and lost her report. David CHOSE to disobey over obedience. David could see the disappointment in his mother s heart as he told her he did not do it. He began to feel really bad for what he had done. In fact, he could not handle the guilty feeling any longer and he told his mother the truth. David s mother was disappointed that he had lied to her, but she was thankful that he came to her and told her the truth. Mrs. Mello forgave David for what he had done, but he also lost the privilege of using the computer for a few days. David and his mom prayed together and asked God for forgiveness and strength against temptation. Sadly there are times when all of us are disobedient. God tells us that we are not to do the will of this world but we are to do the will of God. The will of this world would be to lie, cheat or do whatever we feel like doing even if it is against the rules. David was not trying to hurt his mother, but it did show that in his heart it was more important to him to do what he wanted to do than to do what his mom asked of him. When we love God He places a desire in us to do what is right. Satan my try to tempt us, but we have a choice to make. Will we obey out of love? Or will we disobey? We sometimes disobey and then the Holy Spirit lets us know that we were wrong and we can ask for forgiveness. The Lord is always faithful to forgive us, but there may be things that happen because we disobeyed. Like losing computer privileges was for David. Let us learn to always obey, because that is the way of blessing! By being obedient to God we show our love for Him. Kid s Bible Dictionary Love: What does the word LOVE mean to you? (Read 1 Corinthians 13 to find out what LOVE means to God)

Day Three Be Careful of Who You Follow! Text: Matthew 10:38 And he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. Also read John 13:34,35 I don t think we should be in here, Sheila said to her friend Molly. Oh don t worry about it Sheila, my dad won t care if we are down here in the basement. But didn t he tell you not to go down into the basement without an adult? Yes, replied Molly. It s OK, don t worry, I know what I am doing, said Molly. Molly and Sheila were playing down in the basement below an old ranch house located on Molly s father s property. Actually, Molly was not allowed to play anywhere near the old ranch house. The house was off limits to everyone. The old ranch house was not in very good condition. The roof was falling apart, there were holes throughout the floors, and there was broken glass everywhere. Molly s father knew that it was too dangerous to play around. Sheila had followed Molly s carelessness many times before. And it seemed like every time she followed Molly on one of her adventures she always had gotten in trouble. Why did she continue to follow Molly? Did Sheila enjoy getting in trouble for what she had done? Sheila knew that she was in the wrong place again. It did not take a brain surgeon to figure this one out. Sheila was getting scared and was ready to get out! Molly! Let s get out of here. Molly was not ready to leave. She enjoyed exploring and taking risks. Unfortunately, she was taking a big risk by being in a place were she was told not to be. Sheila finally decided that she was going to get out of the basement with or without Molly. Sheila started up the stairs. When she reached the top stair, the board gave way causing her foot to fall through and her whole body to fall backwards. She fell down 15 steps striking her head against the cement floor. Sheila was unconscious. Oh no! Molly screamed. What should I do? Molly stormed out of the old house and ran all the way to her house about a half mile away. Continued on Day Four Would you follow someone if they continued to lead you into trouble? Why or why not? Was Molly setting a good example for Sheila? Do you set Godly examples for others? Are these girls showing love for the world or for God by their actions? Kid s Bible Dictionary Leadership: showing another person the right way to go or the right thing to do by teaching them and by setting a good example.

Day Four Becoming a Disciple Text: Luke 14:27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. Also read Mark 8:34 Continued from Day Three Molly ran all the way to her house without stopping for a rest. Dad! Help! Molly s father came running down the stairs. What is it Molly? It s Sheila, she fell down some stairs at the old ranch house and she s hurt really bad! The old ranch house? asked Molly s father. I thought I told you ah ah oh, I will deal with that later! Molly s father was upset, but he knew this was not the time to discipline Molly for her disobedience. Molly s father dialed 911 and asked for an ambulance to come as quickly as possible. He and Molly ran over to the old ranch house to check on Sheila. When they arrived, Sheila was sitting up and complaining of a headache. The ambulance crew arrived and took Sheila to a nearby hospital. Sheila ended up with a slight concussion. Everything was going to be just fine. Molly felt terrible. She knew she directly disobeyed her father again. Sheila would not have been hurt if Molly had listened to her father s rules. Not only did Molly disobey her father; but more importantly, she disobeyed God. God has placed parents in a position of authority over children. If we disobey our parent s rules, then we are disobeying God as well. Molly is a believer in Jesus. She had a difficult time following Him because she wanted to do what she wants and not obey rules. Jesus tells us to deny ourselves first then pick-up our cross and follow Him daily. Following Him daily means to give ourselves over to Him every morning when we wake-up and ask Him to help us to be his disciple, or follower. In order to be called a disciple by Jesus we need to love one another just as Jesus loves us. Molly did not show love towards Sheila because she disobeyed and she encouraged Sheila to follow her into disobedience. As a result, Sheila ended up getting hurt. Love for God will cause you to live for Him. Molly learned a valuable lesson. Thanks to the Lord everything turned out OK, but Molly has decided in her heart that she will listen to her parents and obey them. What have you learned from Molly s disobedience? Kid s Bible Dictionary Discipline: training that helps me to obey rules, develop character, and control my behavior.

Day Five Living for God Text: 1 John 4:19 We love Him because He first loved us. Also read 1 John 4:7-21 Our actions will reveal what is the most important things in our lives. If our own desires and wants are the most important things then we will be selfish and unkind. But if following Jesus and the Bible is the most important thing to us then we will live for Him every day. Of course no one is perfect, we are continuing to learn how to be more like Jesus, but the important thing is that we have a desire to be like Jesus. As Christians, we are to live a life that shows Jesus to others. When others see your obedience to Jesus or to your parents it is a witness to them about Jesus. Is it not a wonderful feeling when someone comes over to you and says, I couldn t help but notice how obedient you are to your parents, what a blessing you must be. What a great opportunity to tell them that it is because of what Jesus is doing in your family s lives. When you love Jesus you want to be obedient and you want to show your love to others. When you read 1 John 4:7-21 you will be able to find the 4 C s of how to show your love for Jesus to others. See if you can find them before reading below: CONFESS When you live for God you will want to tell others about Him. (1 John 4:15) CONFIDENCE We can be confident that God s love is perfect. (1 John 4:16, 17) CONDUCT How do we act towards others? How do we act around others? (1 John 4:18,19) CONCERN FOR OTHERS Do you love others just as Jesus loves you? (1 John 4:20,21) Kid s Prayer Time When Jesus Christ lives within our lives we want to live for Him. Love for God will cause us to live for God. When others see your life do they see that you are living for God and not for yourself? This week during your prayer time, ask God to reveal Jesus Christ through your life so others will come to know Him.
