This is the image of Divine Mercy. The image came in a vision to St. Faustina nearly a century ago asking souls to trust in the mercy of God for all things. The mantra of the vision is Jesus I trust in you. It has its scriptural roots in the blood and water that poured fourth from the side of Jesus when he was pierced by the lance on the Cross. The blue/ water is representative of Baptism and the blood/red is the Eucharist. These are the two Sacraments that give divine sacramental life to souls and to the Church. Why is the image in front of the church? It is because the Sunday after Easter was proclaimed Divine Mercy Sunday by Pope John Paul II in 2000 at the same time he canonized Faustina Kowalska to whom Jesus appeared. She was the first saint of the new millennium. Pope John Paul II had a long commitment to this devotion and believed it to be a key component of renewal. He asked the world to join him in this. Saint Maria Faustina was the source of the devotion to Divine Mercy. The world that Faustina lived in (1920-30) was in need of great mercy amidst the wars of that generation. A year after she died, Poland was invaded by the Nazis and just a few miles from the convent where she lived, a death camp was established at Auschwitz. St. Faustina knew nothing of these atrocities. Her focus seems to have been on personal sin, though we need God s mercy for all kinds of sins, social and personal. The Vatican decree for Divine Mercy Sunday says that we are to go to confession, receive the Eucharist, and say prayers for the intentions of the Pope, trusting in God s mercy, at some point near this Sunday to really be available for the fullness of God s graces affiliated with this Feast. Just as in St. Faustina s time, we need a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation in our world. Human beings are often merciless to each other. A rediscovery of Divine Mercy might be just what we need to advance a lasting peace in our world. You could observe the Feast of Divine Mercy and make it more meaningful by: 1. Receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation 2. Placing your complete trust in Jesus 3. Receiving Holy Communion 4. Venerating the image of Divine Mercy by some pious act of recognition as you pass. 5. Being merciful to others through your actions, words, and prayers on their behalf. May you receive the blessings of God s great Divine Mercy on this feast! Fr. Mark Vander Steeg Bishop s Appeal Total as of March 31, 2015 $70,956

Divine Mercy is the Easter gift the Church receives from the Risen Christ! The message of this feast day is simple: God s mercy is greater than our sins! God wants us to turn towards Him with our trust and to turn away from our sins - extending His love and forgiveness to others as He does to us. On this day, Jesus tender mercy is poured out as an ocean of grace upon those who have approached the font of His mercy recently through Confession and today through Holy Communion This special gift of Divine Mercy is not limited to this one powerful Sunday of the year; this devotion includes special ways of drawing daily upon Jesus Mercy and living our response to it. To learn more - including the blessings available through the powerful Divine Mercy Image - visit www.thedivinemercy.org or check out the pamphlets and prayercards on the bulletin board and tables in the Narthex. The Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed each Wednesday in the St. Bernard Chapel after the Mass. Jesus, I Trust in YOU!
