Celebrating our 13 th Anniversary Message From Rabbi Goldstein I nearly kept my promise to offer nonpolitical sermons over the High Holidays. But the truth is I couldn t help myself. Not when Charlottesville was burning with bigotry, Jerusalem s Western Wall was re-affirmed as being only an Ultra-Orthodox synagogue, and Houston and Florida were under water. So, yes, I spoke out on each of these events (reminding us that racism and anti-semitism are very much alive in our society and that we need to fight the good fight for tolerance, that we must unconditionally love Israel even when we oppose some of her government s policies, and that our tsedakah is so significant for helping south Texas and Florida rebuild.) Still, I stand by my recent article in the Ocean County Jewish News where I wrote that my High Holiday themes would be focused on Judaism s richness and resiliency. After all, I said, out most important project is to keep our heritage alive against the tide of assimilation. My approach is that when we allow our tradition to sell itself then everything else, from tikkun olam to audacious hospitality will fall in place. The underlying message is that synagogues, like Sha arey Ha-Yam, are the key to providing what Jews need to survive. We are the only institution that reinforces, through community prayer, study and mitzvot, that we are part of an eternal story that began before our births and will continue after our deaths. We offer meaning to life. So, as we move beyond the fall holidays, re-commit to our wonderful community by joining us on Shabbat, by studying with us every two weeks, and by resolving to do everything in our power to keep Sha arey Ha-Yam as important as it truly is. President s Message I don t know about you, but I can t believe it s almost Thanksgiving and we ll be writing 2018 in about 7 weeks! It s dark when I leave for work in the morning and it s dark when I get home at night (6 months of feeling like a vampire), but since there s nothing I can do about it, I ll hope for a mild winter and take it all in stride. It s also the time of year to be thankful for the opportunities we have and for the people in our lives. I am thankful for the opportunity to be your Executive Board President.thankful for the confidence you have in me that I will successfully manage the affairs of our Congregation, ensuring that we thrive and grow. I am also thankful for the fellowship we share at Shabbat services twice monthly and the friendships we have built. I am also excited to be entering into the season of lights..the season of miracles. I always feel like a kid during, lighting the menorah, playing dreidel, eating latkes, jelly doughnuts and chocolate gelt. It s a time when we commemorate the military success of our ancestors and celebrate one of God s many miracles. This is also a good time to look back over 2017 and acknowledge those among us who do so much to make Congregation Sha arey Ha-Yam a success. Thank you Rabbi Goldstein for providing the spiritual guidance we all need to navigate these unsettled times. Thank you Allan Levy for everything you do as our Ritual Chairperson you ensure that our services run smoothly. Thank you Madelyn Dunn and Sheila Ehrlich for ensuring that our dinners and onegs are flawless. Thank you Ruth Schlyen for opening your home to the Fundraising Committee for meetings and event planning. Last, but certainly not least, THANK YOU to our Executive Board for your support, your assistance and your commitment to our Congregation and your commitment to each other we may not always agree on an issue, but our hearts are always in the right place. I would also like to acknowledge the members who have joined Sha arey Ha-Yam during the past year: Linda & Daniel Moss, Celia & Robert Salzman, Ross & Diane Lambert, and Virginia Josephson. In closing, I need each of you to take part in the day-to-day activities of the Congregation. In order for us to continue to grow and be successful, everyone must participate your Congregational Family needs you! Below is a list of each of the standing committees for you to select from: Music/Choir Fundraising Greeters Hospital Visits Membership Newsletter Tributes & Get Well Yahrzeits Please email me at shaareyhayam@gmail.com with your committee choice.
