Unity Christ Church EXPECT THE UNEXPEDTED! THAT IS THE DOABLE CHALLENGE No one has any more or less faith than anyone else. You have no more or less faith now than you had a year, five, or ten years ago. You cannot between now and some future date develop more faith than you have right now. You were created with all the faith you need to accomplish whatever occurs to you as a goal or idea. Whether you know this fact or not, or whether you believe it or not does not change the existence of faith within you. Some think of faith as an organized, systematic, flow of religious philosophy; they use the word faith when they are actually describing denominationalism. A faith that depends on spoon-fed creeds may be good enough for easy times but certainly not for tough times. We need to develop or exercise the faith we have for such times that is more than mere intellectual agreement with an aggregation of statements about the arbitrary nature of God. A person puts faith in the laws of gravitation long before he/she understands anything about physics. Walking is just continually falling. You stand on one foot and throw yourself forward, relying on the force of gravitation to bring your body into position to be caught by the other foot. If the law of gravitation should change it could be calamitous. It is literally true that we all walk by faith (in a law of nature) and not by sight. It is popularly believed that scientists do not need to use faith because they understand the reason for things as they are. Absolutely not. Nobody understands much of anything. We know the how of a few things, the why of very little. The law of gravitation is a simple statement of fact; it is not an explanation of either why or how. Those who study science may have much more faith than those who do not. Experiments into the why and how of things are propelled by a great faith and very little knowledge. Faith is that which brings the vision of a person into clear focus allowing for greater awareness and development of knowledge. Have faith in God. Verily I say to you, whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou taken up and cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he saith comes to pass, he shall have it. Therefore I say to you, ALL THINGS whatsoever you pray and ask for, believe that you receive them and you shall have them. Jesus Expect the unexpected; that is the doable challenge. The God that created you is God expressing as you and loves you as you are, and so do I; and there is nothing you can do about either one. REFLECTIONS Unity Christ Church November 2009 Page 2 EVERYTHING IS IN DIVINE ORDER Unity Christ Church closed on the sale of its property at 6214 Forsyth (affectionately referred to as the Youth Ed Building) on Thursday, October 15, 2009. Washington University is the proud new owner. Many of us shared our fond memories of this space after the October 18th Sunday service. It has served us well and we bless it to its next highest good. With any successful venture comes an obvious juncture to stop and officially thanks all who assisted along the way. This month s column seems to be the perfect vehicle for doing so. On behalf on the Board of Trustees and Ministers, I d like to thank the following individuals. The members of Unity Christ Church for empowering us to carry out this transaction. Judy Lindow, our office manager and bookkeeper. Throughout this process she was always ready to fulfill random requests for rare documents and information. She is a loyal supporter and a tremendous asset of this ministry. We are fortunate to have someone of her intellect and integrity in our midst. The anonymous donor who loaned us $50,000, interest free. This person s generosity gave us the breathing room we needed to continue to operate until the closing of the Youth Ed building sale. The two individuals who offered to loan us money in the last few, very tight months. Even though we did not have to take them up on their offers, we appreciate their willingness to help out in a pinch. UNITY S FIVE BASIC PRICIPLES OF TRUTH 1. God is everywhere equally present and all good. 2. Human beings are divine; they are expressions of the Christ Spirit within. Their very essence is of God, and therefore they are also inherently good. 3. Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking. Everything in the manifest realm has its beginnings in thought. 4. Prayer and meditation are the direct link with the Mind/Heart of God. 5. Knowing the Laws of Truth is not enough. A person must live the Truth he/she believes. PLEASE REMEMBER UNITY CHRIST CHURCH IN YOUR WILL OR ESTATE PLANNING. REFLECTIONS Unity Christ Church November 2009 Page 4 A Thought & A Prayer: Letting Go, Letting God As we lovingly release the property that served as our youth education building, it is natural to remember and perhaps to grieve. This is a major change for Unity Christ Church. On Sunday, October 18, a time of remembering, blessing, and releasing was held following our Service. Time was given to remembering activities held on the land, including the play ground and lawn. Then we went to the third floor and repeated the process on each of the three floors as well as the basement. Many memories were shared. For those who may have an attachment to this property, and did not attend the ritual on the 18th, you are invited to use this as an example, if you wish to do so, in mentally and emotionally releasing this property to its next useful expression. After giving due time to remembering and releasing, it is time to give thanks for the great blessing this ministry has received in releasing the property, and dedicate ourselves to demonstrating the Kingdom at Unity Christ Church. As Myrtle Fillmore said in her Healing Letters, To be truly healed and quickened by the life more abundant, one must forget the past and the limitations of the past, and offer every thought, every ounce of energy to Spirit, to be used in bringing God's kingdom of light and love and order and beauty and health into the earth, into the lives of all people. This giving is not to be done in human consciousness and might, but in the realization that it is God working through one's soul and body to increase one's life and strength and substance, to fulfill His perfect plan. One's body is to be thought of as the temple of the living God. One's arms and hands are to be thought of, and used, as God's arms and hands, the expression of God-Mind's ideas of power and loving service and splendid work. The executive power of the mind, in its relation to things that we think of as belonging in the three-dimensional world, is expressed through the arms and hands. One should think of whatever one is led to do as being God's work. One should know and rejoice in one's innate ability to accomplish that work. One should realize that one is free to decide wisely, and to do whatever will benefit oneself and others. One should see others in this beautiful spiritual world of activity and bless them (36). We stand at the junction of great possibilities. We must stand firm in faith and love for one another in spiritual community to bring forth that which Unity Christ Church can be. God loves you, and so do I. Martha Mosley Check out my blog, www.revmartha.blogspot.com YOUTH & FAMILY MINIS- TRY Renunciation is the power our youth will study in November. According to Revealing Word, renunciation--a letting go of old thoughts in order that new thoughts may find place in consciousness. A healthy state of mind is attained when the thinker willingly lets go the old thoughts and takes on the new. This is illustrated by the inlet and outlet of a pool of water. The center of renunciation, sometimes called elimination, in the lower part of the abdomen, carries forward the work of elimination of error thoughts from the mind and waste from the body. In a similar vein, in Letters of Myrtle Fillmore, we find, We do not attain this place of life, light, freedom, and love by allowing the soul to dwell upon these shadowy things of the past or by trying to recall the experiences through which we have come. Should we dwell upon such things, we would sink back into them. We must begin at once to rejoice in the light that is come to redeem our sub-consciousness from the shadows of error and fear and superstition and mistakes (58). Releasing, elimination, renunciation, by whatever name we call it, is essential to the health of the mind, body, and emotions. Just as we take in nourishing food, the waste from that food must be eliminated from the body for the body to be healthy. By the same token if we hold on to thoughts and emotions that served us well in the past, but have outlived their usefulness, to remain healthy, we must release these and learn new ways of thinking and feeling. Our children are truly blessed to have these teachings so early in their lives. Thank you Laurie Jill, Karen, Mary, Uriel, Kim, and Juankee for your ongoing work.

REFLECTIONS Unity Christ Church November 2009 Page 5 UNITY S SPIRITUAL MOVIES Friday, November 13, 7 PM Liberty Heights (1999 R) Hosted by Helen Friedman, Ph.D Writer and director Barry Levinson (The Natural, Rain Man, Bugsy, Sleepers, Wag the Dog) hits high stride with this brilliantly acted, humorous, and relaxed film. It is the fourth in a series of dramas (Diner, Tin Men, Avalon) about his hometown Baltimore, Maryland. Liberty Heights is set in 1954, a time when barriers of religion, class, and skin color separated people from one another. The film is about overcoming these barriers. It s also a time of emergent rock n roll. Appreciation of music is another theme. In this smoothly orchestrated coming-of-age story, Barry Levinson shows how the spiritual practice of openness expands the horizons of two Jewish brothers, Ben and Van Kurtzman, played by Ben Foster and Adrien Brody. The film also stars Bebe Neuwirth, Joe Mantegna, Rebekah Johnson, James Pickens, Jr., Orlando Jones, and Justin Chambers, among others. Coming to terms with "the other" is as critical to the development of soul now as it was in the 1950s. Among the spiritual themes explored in this film are: open-mindedness, humanity, fairness, awe, and wonder. The evening begins at 7 PM with a brief introduction of the film, including spiritual themes; meditation; and then the viewing of the film in full. Afterwards, there is collaborative discussion of spiritual and psychological themes. See you at the movies! PRAYER MINISTRY Unity has its roots in the healing ministry of first Myrtle Fillmore and then Charles. Through prayer and life changes, Myrtle was healed of tuberculosis. Charles saw Myrtle's progress and began to work with prayer and meditation. Eventually Charles restored a withered leg from wearing a nine inch lift in his shoe to wearing a four inch lift. This was after he was an adult. Myrtle's instructions are as pertinent today as they were in 1936 when the following was written in Letters of Myrtle Fillmore: This health law is threefold: spiritual, keeping a person assured of his God-given freedom from all anxiety, worry, fear, and lack; mental, giving him the intelligence that enables him to do that which promotes health and success; physical, forming those habits which keep him making the right use of his faculties, and powers, and the life energy and substance (62). There is a tendency to disregard the harmonious combination of these three elements, one person being very careful to observe the spiritual, another to accomplish results through the physical. Our work is to unify these three and to bring our students into the understanding application of the Truth of being (63). One who remembers and lives by the spiritual promises of the law of health will not worry, or seek to manage other people's affairs, or neglect to feed his or her soul with that which is necessary to keep it unfolding Christward. One who is aware of the mental side of his health seeks to keep himself free from the limitations of the race mind, the opinions and demands of others, the depressions and hurried attitudes that keep the Christ ideas from finding perfect expression through his thoughts and acts. One who is determined that his physical life will show forth the peace and order of spiritual reality and divine intelligence is considerate of his body, and careful in his demands upon it. He sees to it that he understands the physical requirements and that he meets these every day. So you see there is more to our Silent Unity ministry than a formula of words to be said at intervals! We want to help you to live the Christ life here and now, which means to live a life of understanding trust in the good; of joyous activity, mental and physical; of freedom from fear and worry; of loving contact with your fellows, without anxiety as to their apparent shortcomings or selfishness (63). With these words of wisdom from our mother, Myrtle, we hold you in prayer for three-fold health. Blessings from Unity Christ Church Prayer Ministry

REFLECTIONS Unity Christ Church November 2009 Page 6 MEET THE BOARD CANDIDATES FRED BEECROFT My path to Unity was through a friend. I have had a lot of Christian fellowship and spiritual growth at Unity. My commitment to the church is to give of myself where I am needed and capable of helping. Since being at Unity Christ Church I have been an usher and helped with other church activities and taken the class, Lessons In Truth, and took it for a second time recently. When I became a member of Unity Christ Church I felt served by the church and had a church family. I feel my past board experience at Cuba Lakes Golf Course will help me be a good board member. As a board member I will do the job to the best of my ability. My leadership style is group consensus. Being retired, I will be able to devote the time needed as a board member to commit to serving you and our church. I pledge myself to serve our church in a spirit of cooperation. JUANKEE McKINNEY My attraction to the Unity movement started in 1979 while living in Kansas City, Missouri. However, I did not attend a Unity Church until I moved back to St. Louis and came to Unity Christ Church in 1984. I became a member of UCC in 1990. During this time, I have served in a number of positions such as teaching in the Youth Education Department where I initially taught the 4-6 year olds and later the Youth of Unity. I served on the Board of Trustees from 1992-95 and in 2000. My third term on the Board of Trustees was 2006-2009. Over the years I have taken numerous classes at UCC. Currently, I lead the Spiritual Support Groups, am the team leader for the Platform Assistants. I am also one of the leaders of the Sunday morning meditation. I am a member of the PAT (Prosperity Action Team) and have served as a member of the Financial Alternatives Committee. In the last year, I have returned to the Youth Education Department, where I now teach the Uniteens. In my professional life, I have a private practice where I work as a Psychologist. I will commit myself to fully serve Unity Christ Church from a Consciousness of Truth by focusing on manifesting the Highest Good for our Church. MEG McCLELLAND I have been a member of Unity Christ Church since 1989 but I have had a Unity mind for as long as I can remember. I have always felt that God is within me. I was so happy when I found UCC and the Unity Movement and to discover there were many people who also thought as I did. I have served UCC in many different ways: a sponsor of Y.O.U. (Youth of Unity, 14-18 year olds); helped with rummage sales; taught the Quest class twice (a year-long commitment each time); served a term (elected in 1999) as a Board of Trustee member; currently serving on the Planning Team, for the past 18 months, preparing recommendations for the Board to move the church forward; just beginning as a Small Group Ministry leader to study parables with church congregants. I ask for your support to elect me to the Board of Trustees where I can use my spiritual gifts while decisions are made to grow and strengthen our church, and our spiritual community, as we move into the future. I commit myself to serve in a consciousness of cooperation and Truth. RICHARD HUGHES I have been a member of Unity Christ Church since 2007. I was called to Unity by my experience with others who followed Unity and the need in my own life to achieve spiritual fulfillment. From the writings of Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, Emilie Cady as well as worship services and classes at Unity Christ Church, I feel that I have experienced and continue to experience substantial spiritual growth. As a trustee I hope to support the church that has supported me and to assist our church to thrive and continue to offer spiritual support and enlightenment to our congregants. I have participated as a member of the Financial Alternatives Committee and am presently a member of the PEP Team and the Finance Committee. What I offer our church is to dedicate myself to the diligent pursuit of my duties as a member of the board of trustees in the spirit of the principles of Unity. I am committed to serving our church in a spirit of harmony and cooperation.
