The Visitor Vol. 44-No. 14 July 23, 2013 A publication of Morningside Lutheran Church, Sioux City, Iowa Writing isn t one of the things in life that I am particularly good at, so each time my name comes up on the rotation to write this article, my anxiety level goes up a bit. Every time I try to start writing, all these thoughts flood my mind and for something that should take 30 minutes to write, it seems like it takes me two hours, and this article is no different. I always wonder, What should I write about this time? Or is there an amazing bible verse or story that has really been speaking to me in the past couple days? Well, as I write this today the only thing on my mind is how thankful I am to be a part of Morningside Lutheran. Some of you know this about me already, but to those of you who don t know me or know my story real well, you should know this church has been my home since my family began going to church. Now why is that important to this article you might ask. It is important because all throughout growing up here there were important people who helped me develop into a follower of Jesus Christ and because of that I chose to go into full time ministry in hopes to inspire other people to follow Jesus. It was because of this church family that I learned about the love and grace of Jesus and how by following him we truly receive the abundant life that Jesus talks about in John 10:10. I am coming into my seventh year of being on staff here at Morningside and this seventh year is one that is shaping up to be unlike any of the six previous ones. As most of you know Ben Anderson has moved to Roswell, New Mexico to take on a new Youth Pastor position, while this is great news for Ben it is sad news for us because it leaves us with a big hole to fill. I will be trying this fall to fill that hole on a temporary basis, but I m going to need help. Just as I remember having such a great church family to help me grow in my faith as a child growing up, I am now asking that same family to come and help shape and grow our next generation of students. We will be having a new class of 6 th grade students joining us this fall in Confirmation and those students need small group leaders. I am asking each of you to pray and ask God if this is something He is leading you to. We really could use six to eight more adults to help on Wednesday nights. There will be other ways to help get involved as well such as: teaching middle school Sunday school, help serve pizza on Wednesday nights from 5:30-6:30, become a substitute small group leader, help lead a high school small group, and many other exciting roles. As for a bible verse that has been exciting me as of late I leave you all with this from 1 Peter 2:9, But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Peace, Paul Peterson MORNINGSIDE LUTHERAN EXPLORER S NIGHT Sunday, August 18, 2013 4:30 Tailgate 6:05 Game Cost $7 per person is your meal, games, and ticket to the game. TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) weekend: I have been to a lot of church things but this was totally different and totally awesome!! We have all grown in Christ s love this weekend and it s a great feeling. Those are only two of the comments heard following a TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) weekend. The next one is July 26-July 28 at Morningside Lutheran Church. It is for students going into their sophomore year of High School through their freshman year of college. It is not too late to sign up. Talk to Paul Peterson or call Julie Garoutte @ 712-276-0200. Morningside Lutheran Library Appeal: Our MLC Library is now well established with much participation and we on the committee are very proud and happy with the enthusiasm shown by this congregation. However, there comes a time when there is a need for new blood. Our committee is in need of new ideas and new inspiration. We know there are many capable members in this congregation that could make a difference in the operation of this library. We are making an appeal to you to step forth in faith and accept this challenge to revitalize what this committee has begun. We have an excellent source of assistance through the auspices of Resource Mate, a technological company that offers all the assistance that is needed to operate efficiently and expertly. They are willing and able to cooperate with us to keep operations easy and efficient with personal and friendly assistance. A limited knowledge of computer use is needed but can be easily accomplished with a minimum of training. After 23 years, the committee is feeling the need to turn this important duty to a new group with an ability to explore new ideas and innovations. We, the committee, ask that you prayerfully consider accepting this appeal. Please contact anyone on the committee or the church office to apply. Thank you and God Bless you. ~The Library Committee: Lois Sakariason, Ruby Pippett, Phyllis Reynders, Leila Agee & Marlene Ahrendt~ Dishes: Many of you have generously donated food for funerals and other occasions at the church. There are dishes that need to be picked up in the kitchen. Please stop by the kitchen and claim any dishes that might be yours. Pictures of the Middle East all look brown and sand-colored. I'm from the jungle where everything is green, or Iowa where there is the beauty of snow. About 4 or 5 years ago, attending Pastor Steve Dornbusch's 'Walking Through the Old Testament', and a couple of his Bible studies, he showed his pictures of the Holy Land and illustrated the Old Testament. The stories came alive. So it's now on my bucket list! Pastor Paul will be traveling with us. He has gone many times before. It will be very beneficial for all of us with his knowledge of the Holy Land. We will walk where Jesus walked. From Bethlehem where Jesus was born to Nazareth and Galilee where Jesus grew up. We will visit Cana, the site of Jesus' first miracle, and the Jordan River where Jesus was baptized. We are planning to see the places where Jesus spent the last week before His crucifixion - Jerusalem, Mt. of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, and the places of His crucifixion and death - Golgotha and His tomb. We will see places that Jesus told about in his parables, like the Jericho road, Mt. Carmel where Elijah prayed and God defeated 450 prophets of Baal with fire from heaven. Pastor Paul and I are making this trip more affordable with a special offer. The price of the trip will be $3899. There is still plenty of time for people to save, but to get the early bird special to save more, a deposit of $500 will be needed by July 25. Contact Pastor Tom or Pastor Paul for more information. ~Pastor Tom~
