Old Greenwich, THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL United Church Connecticut CHURCH OF GREENWICH of Christ Founded in 1665 The Fourth Sunday in Lent 10 March 2013 10 o clock in the morning * * * * The First Congregational Church of Greenwich declares itself to be open and affirming; open to all for participation, membership, leadership and employment, and affirming of all who wish to join us as children of God. We continue to give thanks for God s guidance in our journey of faith.

W E warmly welcome you to worship this morning at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich as we continue our journey through the season of Lent. We pray that this time together will be a tonic for your spirit and an opportunity to feel deeply the graceful peace of God s love. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all cell phones and other electronic devices. *All who are able please stand. Seating of latecomers. PRELUDE This Is My Father s World CALL TO COMMUNITY Please sign and pass the red book. The Palmer Handbell Choir Arr. Anna Laura Page Mary Fike, flute Rev. Avery C. Manchester CALL TO THE SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING MOMENT OF OPPORTUNITY Keep the Faith PRAISING GOD CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP Michael Row the Boat Ashore The Cherub Choir Traditional Donald Haviland, director CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Come to the source of all truth, to the author of life. People: We dare approach our Creator in humility and thanksgiving. Leader: God calls us away from the worship of things, from idols that block our view of grace. People: God is unknown to us only when we have closed our hearts to love.

Leader: In Christ, God comes to us again saying, I will not leave you desolate. People: We need God s Spirit, listening to us and healing our lives. * HYMN In the Cross of Christ I Glory Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 157 OPENING PRAYER (in unison) Gracious God, we gather as ministers of your good news to explore the unsearchable riches of Christ. We take seriously the mandate you have given us, to receive the gospel promises and become members of the Body of Christ. In all the ways we have neglected your call to us, we ask forgiveness. Encounter us again with your extravagant grace, and encourage us to confront the powers that destroy our connection to your Spirit. Give us boldness and confidence to follow where Christ would lead us. We pray in Jesus name, whose prayer we pray together, LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *RESPONSE New Century (black) Hymnal 208 (verse 1) God loved the world, and loving gave a wondrous gift, the lost to save, that all who would in Christ believe should everlasting life receive. HEARING GOD'S WORD FIRST LESSON Al Primo 1 Kings 19:9-12 And there Elijah came to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, What are

you doing here, Elijah? He said, I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the people of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thy altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. From RSV SCRIPTURE ANTHEM Prayer of St. Francis The Children s Choir Carol McClure Vance Briceland, piano SECOND LESSON O Mark 4:35-41 n that day, when evening had come, he said to them, Let us go across to the other side. And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? From NRSV * HYMN Blessed Jesus, at Thy Word Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 212

Music Notes: The Chancel Choir sings a beautiful setting of the Latin chant, Ubi Caritas. The most familiar musical setting is by Maurice Duruflé. This new version is by James Biery, who is Minister of Music at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church in suburban Detroit. He previously served at the Catholic cathedrals in Minneapolis and Hartford. Jim's wife, Marilyn, is also a well-known composer and was Craig's successor at his church in Royal Oak, MI where he served for 15 years before coming to Old Greenwich. Retaining the flowing feeling of Gregorian chant, Jim says this about his setting: "Using sumptuous harmonies, it features a recurring statement of the text, Where true love and charity are found, God is there. The chant-like verses inspire us to set aside petty quarrels and to experience, as one family, God's limitless and pure joy." The translation is: Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ's love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him. Let us fear, and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart. Where charity and love are, God is there. As we are gathered into one body, Beware, lest we be divided in mind. Let evil impulses stop, let controversy cease, And may Christ our God be in our midst. Where charity and love are, God is there. And may we with the saints also, See Thy face in glory, O Christ our God: The joy that is immense and good, Unto the ages through infinite ages.
