FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 11:25-30 Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light. As you read these words from the Gospel today; how do they make you feel? Perhaps it depends on the kind of week you had. Maybe it could depend on, if you are a parent, how difficult it was to get the whole family to church on time. Perhaps there was a lot of frustration and anger on the way to church because that darn train gate just came down and when you arrived at the crossing, you were already running late. Or maybe your spouse was not moving as fast as you would have liked so you could actually get to church on time. We all come to church from many different locations mentally, physically and spiritually. Every one of us comes into the Gathering Space carrying our own baggage, our own personal junk. Jesus is watching each of us come to the altar, and perhaps he is smiling, wondering why we make it so darn hard on ourselves. He is indeed very glad to see us and wants us to trust him. There is no better person than Jesus to have our backs. His offer is so simple and yet so difficult all at the same time: Can we be people who surrender ourselves to the care of the Lord? Are we ready to be fitted with his yoke that is custom-fit to ease the burdens we each have? Well I am sure we all would say, yes, but do we REALLY believe it is that simple? I believe it takes a good sense of humility and a realization that we don t have to go alone. But at times, we seem to put on the martyr rope and see how many people will come to tell us how strong we are and pat us on the back and tell us to carry on. Well you know what? To me, that takes up a lot of unnecessary energy that just leaves you empty and alone. Jesus gives us a simpler way, but it calls us to a true sense of humility and a surrendering of our ego. We must turn in our martyr badge and allow Jesus to give us a helping hand. It doesn t mean that things magically get better but it does mean that we have Jesus walking with us. He is there to guide us and lift us when the world seems to be falling in on us. Everyone has issues and problems in their lives. Sometimes, we see and hear of other situations and we feel that they aren t as important as our problems or that they aren t as in need of the Master s help. Wrong! We all need the help of the Good Shepherd, our compassionate Savior. Sometimes we call on him and sometimes he calls on us. No matter who is calling, we are all part of his family. We are called to take on the burden of the cross and be Christ for others. Other times, Christ comes and helps us carry our cross when things get tough. It is important to always depend on the Lord. He will not leave us alone wandering lost in the world. Turn to him for he is near. Trust that is yoke is light and his burden is easy. God loves us despite our sins. Trust in him and he will not let you down. Have a great week! I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... Share a Lunch Thank you to all contributors of SAL in June! SAL will next meet at 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 23rd in the Pavilion. Please come join us! We will be preparing about 300 peanut butter sandwiches and packing lunches. (Lunches are distributed at Reach Out Lakota and St. Francis- Cincinnati.) In addition to the peanut butter, bread, fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, or cups), snacks, and juice boxes needed for the lunches, we welcome other non-perishable donations, too. The pantries are in particular need of cereal, flour, sugar, cooking oil, canned meat & fruit, and personal care items. (Please note that we do not have access to a refrigerator so please refrain from donating natural peanut butter or highly perishable fruit.) Donations can be dropped off during our meeting time or in advance at the parish office. Thanks again for your support! Please contact Diane Claytor at 779-6895 with questions. The St. John Stephen Ministry: Caring for you The St. John Stephen Ministry has trained Christian caregiving men and women who can listen with a warm heart and show God s love to those in our parish, and in our community, who are hurting. Through the help of a Stephen Minister, he or she brings the presence of a caring Christian friend to walk through and journey with us in those tough times. Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God s love with those who need it most: the lonely, the depressed, the hurting, and the grieving. Is God calling you to reach out to a Stephen Minister? Or is He calling you to reach out for someone you know? Now is the time to get the help you need to find healing and peace. Call Scott Steinke at the Parish Office at (513) 777-6433 ext. 115 to find out more about how a Stephen Minister can be there for you. Serving with God at Mass Are you interested in becoming a Liturgical Minister at Mass? These are the ministries of Altar Attendant, Hospitality Minister, Extraordinary Minister, Sacristan, and Lector. This summer is the PERFECT time to start having you, and your entire family, get involved a little more at Mass. All of our current ministers will attest to the fact that it is a wonderful way to participate more fully in the Mass each weekend, and a great way to feel more connected to the parish. Now is the time to get in touch with me and find out more about how you can become part of this ministry! Training for any ministry will be at your convenience and takes just an hour of your time. So don t hesitate to start the summer off in this ministry! Contact Scott Steinke at 513-777- 6433, ext. 115, or ssteinke@stjohnwc.org for any and all information and upcoming training. Reach Out Lakota Supply Sunday On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of non-perishable food, or a toiletry item, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Place items in the basket with the sign Reach Out Lakota Supplies. Thank you for your support of this community organization. Do you know someone who has drifted away from Catholicism? Have you, or someone you know, drifted away from his/her Catholic faith? If you would like to return to the Catholic Church, we have a ministry to help welcome you back. If interested, please contact Deacon Jerry Barney at 777-6433, ext. 121 or jbarney@stjohnwc.org. 8

On the first weekend of each month the K of C leads the rosary before all Masses. The rosary will start 20 minutes before Mass except for the 11:30 a.m. Mass. At the 11:30 a.m. Mass, the rosary will begin at 11 a.m. Come and join us as we lead the rosary. We have much to be thankful for and you can also include any special intentions. 9
