PENTECOST SUNDAY ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God s promises in the Feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all His disciples to share His forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Galatians 5:16-25. Gospel As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23) or John 15:26-27; 16:12-15. The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:4 THE BREATH OF GOD The breath of the Almighty gives me life. Job 33:4 The only way we are able to live a life of faith, a life full of love, peace, joy, and power is by the Holy Spirit. We see this most clearly in the lives of the Apostles. They had every advantage in being with Jesus and hearing Him preach and seeing the many miracles that He had done, and yet, even with that advantage, they were frightened men living their faith in a locked room before they received the Holy Spirit. What took place in that upper room changed the lives of these men and women and would change the course of human history. THE FEAST OF PENTECOST Brothers and sisters No one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit. There are different forms of service, but the same Lord. There are different workings, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. On this great day, we recall a new life given to the Apostles and the Church, we see the signs of tongues of fire, hear the noise, and feel the wind which accompanied the Spirit. That same Spirit has directed the Church through twenty centuries with great blessings, trying difficulties, but always manifesting an abiding presence. How true that is for us today. We may ask, what are the gifts present and needed by the Church today? We may wonder about the service which the Church can provide to our needy world. We may look to observe the Spirit at work among us. Yes, the words of Paul are manifest today. But, we also must ask, What am I doing to use the gifts I have received, or what service can I provide, or what work needs to be done, and, if I don t do it, it will always remain undone. We pray that the Spirit of Pentecost will awaken us. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit. Galatians 5: 22-25 Sacred silence, holy ocean, gentle water washing over me; help me listen, Holy Spirit, come and speak to me.

A LOVELY DESCRIPTION (please read slowly and try to visualize!) Archbishop Fulton Sheen had described the Holy Spirit as the beautiful space that exists between God the Father lovingly looking down at Jesus, His Son, and Jesus the Son lovingly looking back up at God, His Father. THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Isaiah told us the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Is 11:2. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. The power of the Holy Spirit has been described in many ways. St. Thomas Aquinas categorized these gifts into what we now call the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Here is a brief description of each gift that we receive at our Confirmation: Wisdom To see things as they truly are in an openminded manner. Understanding A heart that accepts, cares, listens, forgives, and understands. Knowledge The ability to comprehend the truths of the universe. Wonder & Awe in God s Presence/Fear of the Lord A sense of the greatness and majesty of God together with a deep realization of God s nearness. Reverence/Piety A deep respect for God, for others, and for all creation. Right Judgment/Counsel The ability to make good and wise decisions. Courage/Fortitude The strength to do what is right in spite of challenges. PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Christ Jesus, before ascending into Heaven, You promised to send the Holy Spirit to Your apostles and disciples. Grant that the same Spirit may perfect in our lives the work of Your grace and love. Grant us the Spirit of Fear of The Lord that we may be filled with a loving reverence toward You; The Spirit of Piety that we may find peace and fulfillment in the service of God while serving others; The Spirit of Fortitude that we may bear our cross with You and, with courage, overcome the obstacles that interfere with our salvation; The Spirit of Knowledge that we may know You and know ourselves and grow in holiness; The Spirit of Understanding to enlighten our minds with the light of Your truth; The Spirit of Counsel that we may choose the surest way of doing Your will, seeking first the Kingdom; Grant us the Spirit of Wisdom that we may aspire to the things that last forever; Teach us to be Your faithful disciples and animate us in every way with Your Spirit. Amen. THE WILD GOOSE DISCOVER A DEEPER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT Would you like to discover a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit? The Wild Goose is now on Formed.org. In this humble, beautiful series, Catholics are invited into a more profound and life-giving relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Wild Goose reveals the simplicity and mystery of this relationship. The Wild Goose was a term that the ancient Celts had for the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit has been given to us not as a possession to be tamed or controlled, but rather as a Person who will lead us to the Heart of God. Just go to FORMED.org, to access our free subscription and enter our Parish Access Code, PV8JMK, and you ll find the best Catholic programs, full-length Catholic feature films, dozens of inspiring e-books, all just a click away, and all free! GOD IS LOVE 1 John 4:8 This simple statement is the beginning and the ending of our pilgrimage of Faith. God is Love and the Lord s Love is perfect, passionate and unconditional. There is nothing that we can do that would cause God to love us more and nothing that we can do that would cause Him to love us less. We are able to come to experience the beauty and freedom of God s Love by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God reveals the Love of the Father that changes us. When we experience God s Love we come to understand in a powerful way that we are in fact lovable. God s Love reveals our beauty and goodness before Him. TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION - LATIN AMERICA & HOME MISSIONS In Latin America, the Church continues to point the way to Christ as the source of hope and healing, both within the family and in society. Many family and catechetical ministry projects funded by this special collection offer families and communities a way to strengthen, affirm, and celebrate their life together in faith. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered Home Mission territories because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Located in the Deep South, Appalachia, and the Rocky Mountains, these dioceses lack the resources to provide their faithful with basic pastoral care, including the sacraments, religious education, and ministry training. These two crucially important and worthy causes need our support and encouragement. Please be as generous as possible to this special collection. NEXT WEEK S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Next week s Second Collection will help offset our Archdiocesan assessment for the Catholic School System in New York. Thank you for your continued support.
