THANKSGIVING: A TIME FOR FAMILY Dear Parishioners, Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. Christmas is too commercial with too many expectations. I spend time writing cards and buying gifts and running to parties and throwing them myself. Other holidays come and go and seem to be harried and rushed. Thanksgiving is more laid back. Family time is a real priority. We do not have to worry about a lot of pictures and whether our gift is good enough. My memories of Thanksgiving are of traveling home from college to be with family. Usually, I had not seen them in several months since my seminary was seven hours away. All of my schoolmates would have their cars running on the Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. When the last exam took place, before our break, we would head home relieved to have a few days off. We looked forward to this for days. It was really an Over the river and through the woods experience on those drives home. Perhaps the concept of just pausing to give thanks is appealing. We recall the ways we have been blessed. We remember all the good people who have been saints for us in our life. We miss them, but we thank God that they have shown us the way. We give thanks for a bountiful harvest and that we live in a country that has so much abundance. 1 SHM_Heartbeat_November_2017.indd 2

JOIN US FOR ADVENT VESPERS For Christians the season of Advent invites us to enter more deeply into the enormous loving gift of God-become-human, God-with-us. Jesus came to us 2000 years ago and lived among ordinary people as one with them. Jesus is with us today, in us ordinary people, in a different but very real way, as he promised. The spirit of Advent urges us to reflect on how we can be especially loving, affirming, hopeful persons. A sacred time and place for that reflection? Once again our parish will offer Advent Vespers, with scripture, music, guest reflectors and silence. Come to Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m. on Dec. 3rd, 10th and 17th. We invite you to bring family and friends for this Advent observance. If you want to start your Thanksgiving with prayer I would recommend coming to Mass on Thanksgiving morning. We will have nine o clock Mass that day. Come and be with other parish members on this wonderful holiday. Show God how appreciative you are and pray for our nation. Blessings, Fr. Mark DeSutter Pastor 2 SHM_Heartbeat_November_2017.indd 3

HONORING VETS SETON TO HONOR VETS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10 Seton will celebrate a Veterans Day Mass on Friday, November 10 to honor all military veterans, as well as those currently serving, both active and reserve. Veterans, active duty military, and reservists and/ or their spouses are welcome to join us at this 9 a.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Moline. We want to thank all for their service and pray for them at this special time. Please join us afterward in Fellowship Hall for a reception sponsored by the Seton Students. RSVP by calling Kelly Clark at 764-5418 SACRED HEART CELEBRATES MASS & HOSTS DINNER, NOVEMBER 11 Join us in recognition of our military on Saturday November 11 at our 4 p.m. Mass. In addition to patriotic music being sung at the Mass, a special Prelude song called Armed Forces The Pride of America by Gilpin and Clark will pay tribute to all those who have served our country. As each military branch is acknowledged we will ask our veterans to please stand and be recognized. We are called to be one as our Lord is one in us and what better way to do this than at the heart of The Eucharist. Following the Mass the social committee will sponsor a social time and a dinner for all veterans and parishioners. This will give veterans a chance to talk about their experiences in the military with other veterans in our parish. Veterans like to talk about the good times they had in the military with others. Just watch their smiles when they are talking about some of their experiences. The dinner will be catered by Hy-Vee with the menu being Roasted chicken, Roast Beef, potatoes, mixed vegetables, salad and dessert. The veterans and one guest will be free, all other adults and children will be $7.00. If anyone has some time on Saturday, November 11 at 9 am we could use some help with setting up tables and decorating. Please just come to the hall. FAMILY TO FAMILY: A LABOR OF LOVE For November s Ministry Spotlight, we spoke to Julie Appleman, of the Family to Family ministry. Family to Family helps provide Christmas gifts for needy families. As this is their busiest season, we appreciate Julie taking the time to tell us more about this important ministry. How does your ministry help the parish? Any money left over from the donation from our parish members are put in a special account to be used during the year for emergency assistance to the needy. When where, and how often are your meetings? Meetings take place in the Lee Parish Center, usually from the middle of September on. There were about five meetings in October, and meetings are held about twice a week from the beginning of December until delivery. What is the most rewarding part of your ministry? Helping the less fortunate at Christmas time, and seeing the smiles on people s faces when they pick up their presents. Seeing how generous our parish is, in donating their money and gifts, is also rewarding. What part of your ministry do you look forward to the most? All the members of the Family to Family are so kind and understanding. They work hard and love doing their part to help the less fortunate. Who should join your ministry, and why? The work we do is hard - but very rewarding. We are hoping that at least two new parishioners will volunteer for next year. I m getting older, and will be retiring from this ministry before too long. But I would love to meet and train anyone who is interested in helping. If you are interested in joining the Family to Family ministry, please contact Julie Appleman at (309) 797-1696. ALL THE LITTLE CHILDREN: A YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE Our Youth Ministry has grown in so many ways this year! We have an amazing group of kids and volunteers. Without the volunteers we could not have accomplished so many things! Many of the children participated in the All Saints Mass in many different roles before heading over to Culemans Fellowship Hall to host their Hallowed House. These young children have performed many acts of kindness, including cleaning up the parish grounds and making cards for the home bound. These kids are amazing and it doesn t stop here. On December 2nd, the youth and other volunteers will watch your children for a donation at Culemans Fellowship Hall from 5 10 p.m. The children will watch the Polar Express, have hot cocoa and enjoy activities that go along with the Polar Express theme. We will even make them dinner. Our goal is to give parents a date night, maybe finish up their Christmas shopping or just having time to themselves in this busy season. And to top that off, we are working with a restaurant that will donate a percentage of the proceeds of dinner that night if you mention our group. The very next morning, on December 3 we will be making Advent wreaths during family day at Religious Education. We will deliver some of these wreaths to the homebound so they have their own Advent wreaths, since we know they may not be able to attend our Advent Wreath making day. Later in the season we will take cookies to the home bound and sing Christmas carols! We have multiple activities going on presently. The Youth Min istry meets every Tuesday night from 6 pm - 7:30 pm in the St Francis chapel. However, if your child cannot make weekly meet ings we have plenty of fun opportunities that your youth can participate in. Weekly meetings aren t required, we just encourage the youth to come whenever they can! In order for the children to go on pilgrimages and mission trips, which they do do multiple times a year, we have to raise funds! We currently have two opportunities for you to help. We have Quad City Dining Guides for sale for $35 and they do make wonderful gifts! The other wonderful opportunity we have is a ben efit play on November 8 at 7:30 pm. We are selling tickets for Miracle on 34th Street at the Playcrafter s Barn Theater. The tickets are $13 each. If you can t make the date, but would like to support us, you can buy tickets for families that would like to go, but may not be able to afford to take their entire family to see the play. If you have questions, would like a dining guide or to purchase tickets, please call Ivy Padula at (309) 762-2362, ext 210. If she is not in the office, be sure to leave a message and she will get back to you as soon as possible! If you see our youth around, say Hi, and get to know them. They love our parish and are excited to be involved. Please continue encouraging the children when they are speaking in front of parishioners. It is not an easy thing to do, and they need to know how much we support them. Make them feel welcome and remind them they are an important part of our parish family! 4 SHM_Heartbeat_November_2017.indd 5

POPE FRANCIS: COURAGE IS NEEDED FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD TO GROW To help the Kingdom of God grow, courage is needed to sow the mustard seed and mix the yeast, in the face of many who prefer a pastoral care of conservation without dirtying their hands. Pope Francis made the point in his homily at Mass recently in the chapel of the Vatican s Casa Santa Marta. The Pope took his cue from Luke s Gospel where Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed and yeast, which though small, have a power within to grow. 5 In his Letter to the Romans, the Pope said, St. Paul speaks about the many anxieties of life that are nothing compared to the glory that awaits us. Commenting on the struggle between suffering and glory, the Pope said, in our sufferings there is in fact an ardent expectation for a great revelation of the Kingdom of God. It is an expectation that belongs not only to us but also to creation, that is frail like us whoa are yearning for the revelation of the children of God. This inner strength that leads us to hope for the fullness of the Kingdom of God, the Pope pointed out, is the Holy Spirit. SHM_Heartbeat_November_2017.indd 6

And hope, the Pope said, is the gift of the Holy Spirit who is in us and leads us to liberation, to great glory. This is why Jesus says that inside this tiny mustard seed there is the force that unleashes an unimaginable growth. It is the same within us and in creation, the Pope pointed out. It is the the Holy Spirit that bursts forth and gives us hope. The Pope noted that in the Church one can see both the courage and the fear to sow the seed and mix the yeast. There are those who feel secure with a pastoral care of conservation, that denies the Kingdom of God to grow. The Pope admitted there is always some loss in sowing the Kingdom of God. One loses the seed and gets hands dirty. He warned those who preach the Kingdom of God with the illusion of not getting dirty. Comparing them to museum custodians, he said they prefer beautiful things without sowing that allows the inner force to burst forth, and without mixing the yeast that triggers growth.
