ST. JOSEPH MESSENGER May 2015 It was right before the season of Lent and I went on a seminary visit to Mexico City, to visit one of our twenty seven young men studying for the priesthood, Rodrigo Mayorga. It was a great trip to visit for the first time this new seminary that the diocese will be using for seminary formation, but also to see how Rodrigo is doing. I am happy to say Rodrigo is doing well and he enjoys his studies. Mass Times Saturday 5p.m. Sunday 10a.m. Monday No mass Tuesday 6p.m. Wednesday 8a.m. Thursday 8a.m. Friday 8a.m. Holy days Ascension of the Lord [Thursday] Reconciliation Saturday 4:00-4:30 or by appointment One night Fr. Joe Pins and I joined the seminary community for Compline, or night prayer. At the end of night prayer the lights are turned off in the chapel except one shinning on an image of Mary, in this case an image of our Lady of Guadalupe. Then we began to sing in Latin the Salve Regina or the Hail Holy Queen. As I was prayerfully singing this ancient Marian Hymn the thought came to me, isn t this wonderfully unique all of us men in this chapel are all in love with the same woman, Our Blessed Mother. The month of May is a special month for us in the parish where we are all encouraged to express and show our love for the same woman, Mary. This love for our Blessed Mother does not draw us away from Christ quite the contrary as St. Louis De Montfort conveys it, our devotion to Mary allows us to love Christ in more intimate and devoted way. In our love for Mary she reveals to us her greatest love and our love, which is Jesus Christ. Throughout this month of May let us cultivate this loving Marian Dimension in our spiritual life, so that we will be able to love and encounter Christ in ways that we cannot imagine. There are several ways we can cultivate a beautiful devotion to our Blessed Mother, so that she can lead us to her son, our savior. First, we can use the Sacred Scriptures to allow Mary to move us toward Jesus? We can use the gospel of Luke and allow the passages of the: Annunciation, Visitation, Presentation, the Nativity and her own Magnificat to speak to our hearts. We can go to the gospel of John and reflect on the words of Christ from the cross or Mary s words at the wedding feast of Cana and allow them to speak to us. Praying the Scriptures with Mary will lead us to a greater love for her, but also a greater love for Christ. We cannot forget to encourage the meditative prayer of the Rosary that not only reflects on Mary s important role in salvation history, but also through her motherly love helps us to focus on the life of our Savior. Saint after saint pope after pope has held up this beautiful prayer for our devotion and our spiritual wellbeing. Praying the Rosary helps all of us get closer and closer to Christ. Please consider this Marian prayer throughout the month or join the parish every Saturday before the vigil mass in the recitation of the Rosary. Another way that we can nurture our devotion to Mary is by praying with holy images of our Blessed Mother. By just reflecting on a picture or a statue of our heavenly mother we can be reminded of her intercessory role, her maternal dimension, her fidelity, her obedience to the will of God and her perfect discipleship par excel lance.
We also grow in our devotion to Mary by studying the Marian teachings that our Church has faithfully handed down to us throughout the ages. By studying Mary s Assumption, Immaculate Conception or Mary s maternity it always leads us back to who Christ is our savior and our Redeemer. This heavenly mother of ours is a woman of faith that needs to be ruminating upon. She needs to be reflected on. She is strong and gentle at the same time. She is courageous and trusts in the Lord. May all of us throughout this month of our Blessed Mother allow her motherly love to help us know Christ s love in a new and more powerful way Through Mary to Christ.
