Volume 11 Issue 6 February 2019 Victory Baptist Church 1830 Wilmington Hwy. Jacksonville, NC 28540 Dear Victory Family of Faith, We are now beginning the second month of 2019, it is time to start shopping for Christmas almost. Can someone please explain how time passes by so fast? I know if you have been in any of the stores shopping since Christmas you have been overwhelmed with red hearts and chocolate candy. They can mean only one thing, this must be the month of Valentines. What do we really know about Valentine s Day? According to romantic legend, Valentine was a kind-hearted Roman priest who married young couples against the wishes of Emperor Claudius II. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. The Roman priest reportedly was beaten and then beheaded because of his actions on the orders of Emperor Claudius II, on or about the year 270 AD. He was beheaded on the 14th of February. There are claims that the Roman church may have decided to place St. Valentine s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to Christianize the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Did you know that Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine s didn t begin to appear until after 1400? (Who 2 Biographies). What a way to say I love you, a card that someone else wrote for you to buy, with a box of candy to share. No wonder it doesn t always last. This world has truly perverted what love really is. If love seems to be ever-changing because of feelings, circumstances, or even social standards, there must be some way to find the real meaning of love. The best place I can think to look would be to the One who is love. Zephaniah said that God will rest in His love. Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. God described Himself to Moses as a God, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. That s someone you can really trust. Steadfast love is unchanging. Love does not adjust because of feelings, it is everlasting. It does not stop because of our failure to express our love. Just as God chose to love us, we must choose to love others with no expectation of return. God has called His Church to be givers of love. Since we are His Church, (only those that are born of God), we are the ones that have been called to be givers of love. First Corinthians 13:4-7, tells us what love looks, feels, and acts like. Paul paints a beautiful picture of love to the church in these verses. I ve chosen for our memory verse this month. Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. Don t let the month of February be the only time of the year that we show appreciation for the one s we love. Never forget that God rest in His love for us. We need to rest in His love as well. In Christ love, Bro. Damon
