In Depth: The Aldersgate logo was inspired by the Love Sculpture in Philadelphia, PA., to remind us that God is Love and that Love is the Greatest Commandment. Aldersgate In Action In Depth: In Depth: The Breath of God is the name of our current sermon series, which has been inspired by the book Fresh Air by Jack Levinson. During this series, we will explore the Holy Spirit as God s mystical, practical, expansive, unbridled presence in the world. Today s theme, Common Good, is the fifth sermon in the series. You will find the order of worship for today s service on Page 4. Welcome to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where the mission is to raise up deeply devoted disciples of Jesus. You have a place here. Regardless of who you are, where you have been and where you are in faith s journey, you belong here. In Aldersgate In Action, you will find information about various ministries and opportunities. Please, feel no pressure. Just know that if you are looking to grow in your faith and in relationships with God and others, you are welcome and encouraged to do both here. Grace and Peace! Aldersgate United Methodist Church 1741 Sayles Blvd., Abilene, TX 79605 (325) 672-7893 www.aldersgateabilene.org

In the Works Regularly Scheduled Services and Opportunities to Grow and Serve: All are welcome! Please contact the Office (672-7893), if you d like to know more about becoming involved in the activities on the schedule below. Sunday: Mother s Day 9:00 a.m. Traditional Worship 10:05 a.m. Sunday School 11:05 a.m. Contemporary Worship NO EVENING ACTIVITIES Monday: 7:00 p.m. Boy Scouts This Week: Tuesday: 11:00 a.m. UMW Luncheon at Camp Butman 6:00 p.m. Jubilee Ringers Wednesday: 7:00 p.m. Chancel Choir In Depth: Each week, the pages of the In Action will contain updates, news and other information about Aldersgate s music ministry, the children s, youth and college ministries, and opportunities to serve in the Mission Field. (The Mission Field has been identified as four areas of focus in which to share the love of God outside of the church locally: McMurry University (and other Abilene colleges and universities), Bowie Elementary, Our Neighborhoods and Aldersgate Academy). College Ministry: Panama Fundraiser on Wednesday As many of you know, I am leading a trip to Panama in August. The team consists of members of our church and eight students from McMurry University. For some of these students, this will be their first overseas mission trip, which is pretty exciting. I would like to invite you to participate in a fundraiser event on this Wednesday, May 11, at Moe s Southwest Grill (4138 Ridgemont Drive, in front of Lowe s). The owner of Moe s has been gracious enough to schedule this fundraiser for us, of which 60% of the proceeds will go toward funding our Panama trip. So here is how it works: you bring $10 CASH (no debit, credit or checks) and the flyer that is in your copy of the Aldersgate In Action to Moe s Southwest Grill on Wednesday during the normal business hours, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. With your $10 CASH, you will receive any entrée, a side of chips and queso and a medium drink. Just make sure to show the cashier your flyer. (If you forget, that s okay. Just tell them you would like to support the Panama team!) Thank you for all the support you show to both our college students and to Aldersgate s mission! Kyle Watson

Academy Ministry: Teacher Appreciation The goal of the Academy ministry team is to foster genuine relationships between our church family and the Academy staff and its students and their families. The Academy employs 20 dedicated teachers and staff members who care for the 110 students who attend the Academy each week. For these families, the staff members ARE Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Our ministry team would like to present a monetary gift to each Academy staff member in appreciation for their dedication to the students. You are invited to consider participating in this congregational outreach to Academy staff members by making special donations for the Academy staff appreciation bonus. You can designate Academy bonus on your check or send a special donation to the attention of K.B. Woods, the church s financial officer. Donations for this purpose will be accepted until May 11. On your behalf, the ministry team will present the gifts to the Academy staff later this month. Thank you so much for participating in the Academy ministry by giving a monetary gift for staff appreciation bonuses. This is one tangible way we can share with the Academy staff members how much we value their hard work and dedication. Grace and Peace Pam Rosenbaum (Academy Ministry Team Member) Youth Ministry: Senior Sunday Sunday, May 22, we celebrate our graduating high school seniors! This is an opportunity as a church family to show love and support to our graduates. They will be recognized in both worship services. If you know of a graduate who is a part of our Aldersgate community, please let Daniel Mathis know so he or she can be recognized as well. Our graduates will be presented with a gift and Bible as a reminder that whether they stay in town for their next adventure or venture off into new frontiers, their church family will always be there to cover them in prayer, love and support. Also, just a reminder: The Youth group will not meet tonight. Daniel Mathis

The Breath of God: Common Good 1 Corinthians 3:1-17 Sermon Notes I JUST WANT TO Competiveness in Corinth Worldly and Merely Human? We, together, are God s Temple! Getting Our Perspective RIGHT Questioning Ourselves Perhaps, then, our prayer for the week could be: God, open our eyes to see how your Holy Spirit has fallen upon them, just as it has on us. Daniel Harris Our Mission: Raising Up Deeply Devoted Disciples of Jesus

Senior Adult Ministry: Fellowship Time The first Senior Adult Ministry event has happened and it was great!! Approximately 25 people gathered for lunch and games. We found out that like in most places, the domino players take advantage of other people! We started by playing a get-acquainted game to find out something about each other. We learned that we have lived in many places and have led interesting lives. What a joy to be in this group! We decided that we had so much fun that we will begin meeting on the fourth Thursday of each month at noon for a fellowship lunch and game time. If you are interested, mark your calendar. Our next event is a trip to the Fandangle in Albany. Get ready to celebrate western heritage. More details will follow later. Grace and Peace Reed Justus SPRC: Introducing Mary Lust The Staff/Parish Relations Committee is pleased to introduce Mary Lust to you as our new Director of Administration effective, June 20, 2016. Mary recently has relocated to Abilene with her husband, the Rev. Jeff Lust, who is a United Methodist pastor and the new chaplain at McMurry University. Mary lived in Albuquerque, NM, her whole life until moving to Abilene. She comes to us with extensive experience in church administration. She has been working in United Methodist churches for the past 14 years, with the last 12 years being focused on church administration. Since 2011, she has served as the Director of Ministries and Operations at Central United Methodist Church in Albuquerque. Mary is very excited to be part of our staff and church, and we look forward to welcoming her and her gifts for ministry as we continue raising up deeply devoted disciples of Jesus. Mary and Jeff have 5 children between them. Mary s son Ray and his family (wife and 3 kids) live in Phoenix. Mary s son, Zach, lives in Albuquerque, and Mary s daughter, Kelsey, lives in Flagstaff, where she s a student at Northern Arizona University. In the Word: First Recommendation by Pastor Steve Last Fall, a series of Vision Huddles gave you the opportunity to share with the members of the Futuring Team how you see God at work at Aldersgate. Our discussion included many positive stories of growth as we have pursued our mission of raising up deeply devoted disciples of Jesus in the past several years. As we processed this information, the 13 members of the team discerned that God was calling us to recommend to the Administrative Board that Aldersgate officially adopt the mission statement and several clarifying statements that support and explain the mission. On May 1, the board agreed and unanimously adopted the recommendation. The first of the clarifying statements follows Disciples of Jesus A disciple is a follower. In the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus tells his followers to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything he had commanded. For this reason, we at Aldersgate recognize baptism as an outward sign of God s grace, love and forgiveness working in all disciples, and we are committed to follow the command of Jesus to love God and to love people in everything that we do. We seek, as individual believers and as a community, to live in such a way that the transforming love and life of Jesus is evident in every interaction we have with the people whom God places in our path. Baptizing is linked to believing and receiving God s grace, love and forgiveness. Therefore, Aldersgate engages in ministries that encourage and help us to renounce the darkness of evil and put our whole trust in the grace of God for forgiveness and transformation as we invite people to join us on the journey of faith of trusting in and following Jesus. Teaching to obey everything that Jesus commanded means that Aldersgate will engage in ministries that help disciples adopt the true narratives about God, self, others and the world that will empower us to live out the values of the Jesus in our everyday lives. We seek to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus, and we encourage people to allow their lives to be deeply shaped by the teachings of Jesus. As your pastor, I am committed to leading our church through the lens of this mission. Raising up (making) disciples was important to Jesus, and it is important to us! In 2016, we are reading through the Bible together using the Bible Project reading plan that includes introduction videos for each book of the Bible and daily readings. They have the Bible divided into 16 sections or chapters, all designed to help you get a feel for the Bible, Old and New Testaments, as one long story from creation to Christ s ultimate return. We will publish the daily readings in the In Action each week. You also may find them at http://thebibleproject.tumblr. com/readscripture along with the suggested videos. The videos are available on the website or you can have them sent to your e-mail inbox as they come up in the cycle. There is also an app for your smart phones. Tim Mackie, one of the founders of the Bible Project, says, We want to help you learn how to read the Bible as you actually read through the entire thing for yourself. Let s begin this journey through the Bible together.
