Call to Worship The Scriptural call to worship at the beginning of our service is a reminder that, as we gather, it is God who initiates and reveals Himself to us through His Word, and we respond to Him. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy. Psalm 103:1-4 Corporate Confession During this time we acknowledge that we have sinned against a holy God, and we have the assurance that, because of Christ, we have been forgiven and are blessed recipients of God s mercy, grace and love. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Romans 3:23-24 Offering Giving is an act of worship in which we give generously of our substance to further the mission of the church and to bring glory to God. 3

Racial Harmony and a Christian Worldview At Hickory Grove, we are convinced that a Christian worldview should inform how we address various topics and cultural issues. A Christian worldview allows us to think with the mind of Christ and act with the compassion of the cross. When addressing racial harmony, therefore, we seek to do so from a distinctly Christian perspective. We begin with scripture as our chief source for guidance and wisdom, providing us with instruction and illumination. Scripture reminds us that every form of racism stems from sin (Genesis 3:6). Secondly, the cross is God s means of reconciling diverse sinners to God and to each other (Ephesians 2:1 22). We understand our reconciliation with God to involve reconciliation with others. Finally, the church is the family of God, comprising diverse people, adopted by the same Father, and declared to be one new man in Christ (Ephesians 2:15). We will continue to stand by our Biblical convictions and, as we do, we invite you to join us as we champion a distinctly Christian worldview. The New City Catechism The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at helping children and adults alike learn the core doctrines of the Christian faith using 52 questions and answers. Learn more at NewCityCatechism.com. Part 1: God, Creation & Fall, Law QUESTION 10 What does God require in the fourth and fifth commandments? Fourth, that on the Sabbath day we spend time in public and private worship of God, rest from routine employment, serve the Lord and others, and so anticipate the eternal Sabbath. Fifth, that we love and honor our father and our mother, submitting to their godly discipline and direction. Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 19:3 PRAYER Life-Giving Father, we will flourish only when we walk in your ways. You have made us, and you tell us we need rest. Keep us from justifying ourselves through ceaseless work. Give us humility to honor our parents. May we always live by your commands rather than by our own instincts. Amen. Read the full commentary for this question at NewCityCatechism.com. 6
