Honolulu, HI 96821 808.377.5477 www.calvarybythesea.org Third Sunday of Advent December 14, 2014 7:00 pm God calls us to be a welcoming people! Welcome to people new to faith, to Christians of every flavor, and to long time Lutherans. Welcome to all with no church home, who need strength, want to follow, have doubts, or do not believe. Welcome to new guests and old friends. Welcome to people of every age and size, color and culture, ability and gift, to gay and straight, to old and young, to believers and questioners, and questioning believers. This is a place where we live past the labels, where we are welcome to celebrate and grieve, rejoice and recover. This is a place where our lives are made new. Welcome to worship God on this day!

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP The scripture lessons assigned for today make clear that God turns disasters and mourning into laughter and shouts of joy. So also does "A Play in a Manger, the Christmas musical play presented by the Performing Arts @ Calvary as the sermon. We gather and celebrate our children as they call us to worship and lead us in a foretaste of God s party. SOUNDING OF THE PŪ Please gather as the sounding of the conch shell calls us to worship. RINGING OF THE BELL During the Ringing of the Bell please center your thoughts on Makua God the Creator, Keiki Kane Jesus Christ our Redeemer, and Uhane Hemolele the Holy Spirit our Comforter. GREETING, Kahu Tim Tear open the heavens, and come down. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. CONFESSION OF SIN, Kahu Tim Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who shapes the whole creation, 2

who comes with might and mercy, who fills the hungry with good things. Amen. Let us approach the throne of grace with repentant hearts. Silence is kept for reflection. Creator God, forgive us for we deny our humanity and act as our own gods. We advance ourselves at the expense of others. We elevate personal desires to universal importance. We put ourselves above your command to love and serve. Yet you, O Lord, are the potter, and we are the clay. Remake us into your people. Rebuild what sin has broken, that we and the whole creation may rejoice living in your peace. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! ASSURANCE OF PARDON standing God is patient, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. In the name of + Jesus Christ, I bring you this good news: You are free from all that imprisons you; your sins are forgiven; God heals your broken hearts. Live in peace and harmony as you wait for the day of God. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! PRAYER OF THE DAY standing Stir up the wills of your faithful people, Lord God, and open our ears to the words of your prophets, that, anointed by your Spirit, we may testify to your light; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives 3

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! GREETING OF GUESTS and SHARING OF ALOHA standing The Lord be with you. And also with you. WE HEAR THE WORD LIGHTING OF ADVENT CANDLE 3 ALL SINGING: O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. O come, O Wisdom from on high, Embracing all things far and nigh: In strength and beauty come and stay; Teach us your will and guide our way. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. O come, O come, O Lord of might, As to your tribes on Sinai s height In ancient times you gave the law In cloud, and majesty, and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. 4

ONE: We praise you, O God, for this circle of light that marks our days of preparation for Christ s advent. As we light the candles on this wreath, kindle within us the fire of your Spirit, that we may be light shining in the darkness. Enlighten us with your grace, that we may welcome others as you have welcomed us. Grant this through Christ our Lord, whose coming is certain and whose day draws near. Amen. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION standing Ka Manaʽo ʽIʽo Kā Manaʽo ʽIʽo (Faithful, Faithful Is Our God), by Joe Camacho, arr. John L Bell, 2002 GIA. Music used by Permission (One.License.net A-714410). GOSPEL standing, read responsively John 1: 6 8, 19 28 John's gospel describes Jesus as the "light of the world." John the Baptist is presented as a witness to Jesus, one who directs attention away from himself to Christ, the true light. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah." 21 And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, 5

"I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No." 22 Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said. 24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" 26 John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27 the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal." 28 This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON IN DRAMA, MUSIC and DANCE, Performing Arts @ Calvary, Haley Damm, director A Play in a Manger by Bob Howard, 2014 Little Big Stuff Music The town is preparing their annual Christmas Extravaganza but this year it s going to be bigger and better than ever, a real over-the-top display. The excitement is off the chart as the writer and director and legend-in-his-own-mind, Cecil V. DeVille, calls for pyro-technics, skydiving angels, dancing camels, and more. It s obvious that this year s production will be the greatest ever! But when catastrophe and calamity send those grand plans up in smoke, their epic production becomes an epic fail. Visions of grandeur are replaced with the beauty and power of the simple truth of Jesus birth: The 6

Son of God, born to humble parents, lying in a simple manger, come to redeem. Come and behold Him, born the King of angels! O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH standing With longing and hopeful expectation, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need. A brief silence. 7

Let us pray that the people of God prepare the way of the Lord by bearing witness to the light and giving thanks in all circumstances. Hear us, O God, and Come, Lord Jesus. Let us pray that governments, political leaders, and social service agencies will work together to free all those held captive by poverty, oppression, and disease. Hear us, O God, and Come, Lord Jesus. Let us pray that from the garden of this earth praise and righteousness will spring forth, and fruitful harvests will provide bread to feed all who are hungry. Hear us, O God, and Come, Lord Jesus. Let us pray that you teach us to pray without ceasing as we commend into your care all who are brokenhearted, lonely, grieving, or ill. Hear us, O God, and Come, Lord Jesus. Let us pray that you strengthen the hands of all who serve in this congregation as teachers, musicians, worship leaders, tribe leaders and members, Stephen Ministers, deacons, and volunteers. Hear us, O God, and Come, Lord Jesus. W.H.A.L.E., a time of thanks for answered prayer and prayer requests. Let us pray that you clothe us with the garments of salvation, until with all your saints we behold the fullness of your glory. Hear us, O God, and Come, Lord Jesus. Receive our prayers, faithful God, as we watch and wait for your coming among us in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Anyone desiring individual prayer and intercessions please contact Kahu Tim or members of the Stephen Ministry team at the conclusion of the worship service. SANCTUS standing The Sanctus is sung following, we praise your name and join their unending hymn. In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. In a similar manner, after supper, Jesus took the cup, gave thanks and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. THE LORD'S PRAYER in unison Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 10

At Calvary by the Sea all those who have a relationship with Jesus Christ and those who are seeking such a relationship are invited to experience the real presence of Christ in the sacrament of Holy Communion. You are invited to follow the direction of the Kahu and come forward to encircle the altar area. There are kneelers for those who prefer to kneel. Dip the bread in either the red wine or the white grape juice and then eat the element. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION seated Lord God, we give you thanks that you have fed us even now with the banquet that is yet to come. Keep us alert for signs of your presence in the world around us. Send us as healing oil and sheltering comfort to those in need, and make us bold in testifying to the light of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
