Hugh Wetzel Dies Hugh Wetzel, Urbana IL passed away peacefully at his home Friday, December 13, 2013. There was no service or obituary, but his wife, Dottie asked for donations to be made to the Illinois 4-H Foundation in his memory. For those of us who were a participant in one of the International 4-H Exchange programs, Hugh was the one who was in charge of the IL IFYE programs. This included IL IFYE Rep; IFYE Ambassador, Host Family, or any other names that was associated with International 4-H Programs. For nearly 60 years Hugh provided leadership and guidance to the learning, living, and sharing experiences for thousands of youth and families throughout the state of Illinois, the nation, and the world. He retired in 1982 as State Extension 4-H Youth Development Specialist. During his tenure he work closely with staff at the USDA to form the International 4-H Youth Exchange Program. He was chairman of the State 4-H International Programs Committee and member of the National 4-H Congress Program Committee and National 4-H Conference Committee. He also helped establish the 4-H link with the National Junior Horticulture Association. Hugh was a 4-H member in Madison County, IL. Hugh was inducted to the National 4-H Hall of Fame October 3, 2014 at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Maryland. Hugh was one of 20 significant contributors to the youth development movement that was honored with this induction. At our Annual Meeting on March 29 th those in attendance will discuss how our Association would like to honor Hugh. FROM THE PRESIDENT: Illinois IFYE is working on the National IFYE Orientation program. You will recall that we hosted this program last year in Bloomington, IL. This year it will take place in conjunction with the National IFYE Association Conference in Sparks, Nevada. We are excited about this new venture. We have a committee of 6 Illinoisans who plan to be in Sparks for the National IFYE Association Conference along with 2 new IFYE s from Kansas who will be working with the Illinois Teaching Team. We are looking forward to also having Alan Lambert, the new National IFYE Program Director working alongside us this year as he prepares to take over the Orientation in the future. Plan to meet us in Pontiac, IL for the annual Illinois Spring IFYE Meeting. Besides seeing the sights of Pontiac, we will be sharing our experiences at the World Conference in Thailand. The Land of Smiles welcomed us to their country with open and caring arms, sharing with us the beauty of their culture and teaching us a bit of their way of life. Hope Heslop, IL IFYE President

2014 National IFYE Conference The National IFYE Conference will be June 19-22 in Sparks NV (near Reno) at John Ascuaga s Nugget. All registration information is on the National IFYE Web site www.ifyeusa.org The IL IFYE Association made a commitment to conduct the National IFYE Orientation for 2013 and 2014. Last year it was held in Bloomington IL. This year Illinois will conduct the orientation June 18-22 nd prior to and during the National IFYE Conference. Hope Heslop is chairman of the IL Orientation Committee. As of now Hope, will be assisted by Crystal Yonker, Jonna Burck, Toni Frank, Paul Rice, Bev Hornickel and Larry Wachtel from Illinois. Also two recent returning IFYE s from Kansas, Karla Funk and Matti Kuykendall have joined the teaching team. Our Sympathy The IL IFYE Association extends its sincere sympathy to Virginia Wilking Oost, Decatur IL whose mother, Mary Elizabeth Wilking died on Tuesday January 28, 2014. Virginia was an IL IFYE from Macon County in 1988. The IL IFYE Association also extends its sincere sympathy to Susan Herrin of Belleville IL whose mother, Carolyn Herrin of Bristol IL, died February 26, 2014. Susan was a 1975 4-H Labo Participant to Japan. The IL IFYE Association also extends it sincere sympathy to Bill Fugate, Fairbury, IL on the death of his mother, Beradine Fugate on February 27, 2014. Bill was an IFYE to Denmark in 1963. Editor s Note: I only know of these deaths if someone sends me a note of information. So if I have missed someone, please let me know.

IFYE Fellowship One of the side benefits of the IFYE Program are the opportunities to make many friends from all over the world and really get to know them. Over the New Year s Holiday of December 29, 2013-January 1, 2014 several IFYE s and friends of IFYE s gathered in Northeast Indiana for Wonderful Winter Weekend fellowship, thanks to Betty Jo and Jon Roberts. The group decided there should be another Wonderful Winter Weekend fellowship opportunity this year and decided it should be in the Springfield IL area with headquarters in Sherman IL. So mark your calendars for December 29, 2014-January 1, 2015 for this event. You can come for one day, two days or all 4 the choice is yours. More details of the event will be announced in the fall.
