2 The Church of St. George Long Lake, Minnesota WELCOME to... THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE A Letter from the Pastor HEART of a PRIEST Thousands of Catholics venerate the incorrupt heart of St. John Vianney as the reliquary makes a national pilgrimage. The front cover of the February 2019 issue of the Knights of Columbus COLUMBIA magazine displays the picture of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests, holding a crucifix in his hands. St. John Vianney (1786-1859), after many years of difficulty in postfrench Revolutionary times and in studies for the priesthood, is remembered for his gift of listening well and of understanding with the tenderness of Christ in the confessional, a place of Divine Mercy. The people came from everywhere and encountered a saint in the confessional. People came to him for spiritual guidance and were attracted to his teaching which was simple and inspired by the Gospel and the patristics ( early Christian theologians). He spoke in a language that both children and adults understood. He emptied himself in humility and poverty, so that Christ could find a free space to dwell in him. Thank you to all our visitors, guests and extended family members for joining us this weekend. Call the office at (952) 473-1247 or email us at stgeorge@msn.com if you would like more information about the parish or to register. The college level seminary in our Archdiocese is named after St. John Vianney. I attended St. John Vianney Seminary for four years during the early 1970 s. This year the seminary is observing its Golden Anniversary. Here, at St. George Parish, in the new parish confessional on the confessor s side, there are two pictures on the wall, one of St. John Vianney and the other of St. Padre Pio. Both of these holy priests heard many hours of confessions daily, as many as 12 in winter and 18 in summer. So many people came from great distances to make their confessions in the presence of these holy men in early moments in time. I receive much inspiration and encouragement to be a persevering spirit, as I look upon their congenial faces while seated in the confessional awaiting penitents who value the Sacrament of Penance and Divine Mercy in their lives, in these moments in time. These men bore the HEART of a faithful PRIEST and remain true models for the priesthood today. In conclusion, I will now provide some additional, concise biographical information that I found online at the Knights of Columbus Website under the heading of Saint Jean Vianney Relic Pilgrimage. Early Life and Struggles Born in a small village in France in 1786, Jean Vianney and his family suffered through the dark years of the French Revolution, when the faith was attacked, churches were destroyed, and bishops, priests and religious martyred. So dangerous were the times that young Jean had to receive his first Holy Communion in secret from a faithful priest. Yet In his counsel with caring, pastoral remarks, St. John hardship only increased Jean s desire to serve Jesus and his people. Vianney would try to build up poor sinners and encourage After the Reign of Terror ended in France, and them on the narrow road that leads to salvation. Who following the Napoleonic wars, young Jean entered the wouldn t be uplifted to hear that John Vianney said, The seminary, where he met with more obstacles. He found saints don t all start well, but they finish well. studies difficult, struggling especially with Latin, and was about to be dismissed from the seminary when an official of St. John Vianney wrote: Prayer is nothing else but union with God. When one has a heart that is pure and united his diocese interceded. Knowing the young man to be earnest and prayerful, the vicar general asked the seminary rector with God, he is given a kind of serenity and sweetness that make him ecstatic, a light that surrounds him with marvelous some simple questions: Is he pious? Has he a devotion to brightness. In this intimate union, God and the soul are fused Our Lady? Does he know how to say his rosary? The rector admitted that Jean was a model of piety. The vicar general together like two bits that no one can ever pull apart. This said that he should continue his studies and the grace of God union of God with a tiny creature is a lovely thing. It is will do the rest. At Jean Vianney s ordination in 1815, the happiness beyond understanding. vicar general said, The Church wants not only learned priests but, even more, holy ones. The Shrine of Ars, France, has entrusted to the Knights of Columbus the major relic of St. Jean Vianney s The Curé of Ars incorrupt heart for a national tour in the U.S., from November Father Vianney was assigned to the small farming community 2018 through early June 2019. The Knights of Columbus of Ars, whose parish consisted of 260 people. Walking along welcome this special opportunity to offer for veneration a major relic of the patron of parish priests, whose holiness and the road, towing a few possessions in a cart, he integrity is a model for clergy and laity alike. The national tour (Father Juettner s Column Continued on p. 5) does seem not include any visits to Minnesota on its schedule.

Founded by brothers Ray Hoffman, Greg Ehalt and Bill Pollard, the scholarship program started off with a $500 annual offering and has grown to over $2,000 today. The Knights are committed to helping as many of our youth as we can, as they are the future of our parish and beyond. Once again this year, the council is excited to announce scholarships will be offered to St. George high school seniors, current college and vocational technical students, as well as graduates choosing to serve our country. The scholarship program is just one of many ways that our council serves our communities and parish. We have been fortunate enough to have fundraisers help make this scholarship fund a reality and to grow with each passing year. Without the generosity of the parish, this would not be possible. Anyone interested in making a donation to our scholarship fund, please contact Grand Knight, Ed Rundle. Thank you all for your kindness and support of our council. Those interested in applying for this scholarship should look for the scholarship display which is located in the church entrance and on the church website (www.stgeorgelonglake.org). Read through the application and eligibility requirements, fill out the application, and then submit it to the address listed on the attached form. (Father Juettner s Column Continued from p. 1) thanked a local boy who pointed him the way, saying, You have shown me the way to Ars; I will show you the way to heaven. The political turbulence, anti-clericalism and religious skepticism of the age had taken their toll on the village, and the practice of the faith was poor. Father Vianney undertook a life of heroic penance and prayer to draw his people away from sin and closer to God. Known for his wise spiritual counsels and the gift of reading hearts, he soon became a prisoner of the confessional, hearing confessions for up to eighteen hours a day, as people came from across Europe and beyond to see him. He also exercised great charity, building an orphanage for homeless children and receiving beggars with an open heart and hand. Due to his success in bringing souls to Christ, he became a target of the devil, who confronted the priest on various occasions. Undeterred, Father Vianney did not fall for the devil s tricks and dismissed strange events by saying, It s just the devil. Jean Vianney died on Aug. 4, 1859, at the age of 73. Nearly 1,000 people attended his funeral, including the bishop and priests of the diocese. On Oct. 3, 1873, Pope Pius IX proclaimed him Venerable, and on Jan. 8, 1905, Pope Pius X beatified him. St. Jean Vianney was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 31, 1925. In 1929, the Holy Father declared him patron of parish priests. His feast day is August 4. Fr.
