Reflection over the past year with all it brought and anticipation over the new year with wonder about what it might bring. As I reflect over this past year Teresa and I continue to give thanks to God for the opportunity to serve here in Murphysboro and the blessing this congregation has been in our lives. The wonderful new relationships we have received, the involvement in ministries and mission, and the special traditions which are a part of this congregations life. One of those wonderful traditions is the passing of prayer blankets or shawls through the congregation some Sunday mornings as we worship. It may be for the celebration of the gift of new life for a child or grandchild of our congregation or it may be to focus our prayers around an area of deep concern for one of our members. While these situations are in many ways opposites they enlist in us one of the fundamental responses of what it means to be a part of a faith community; we rejoice in others joys as we also share in each others burdens. As I watch the blankets move across the congregation I think of the parent or grandparent who wraps a handcrafted blanket around a precious baby knowing that the gentle hands of faithful people surround them with love and support. Or to consider the person battling illness or injury who in a moment of chill pulls around them a blanket remembering those who love them and hold them up in prayer. I cannot help but believe these moments bring a kind of comfort and or joy which can only come to those who know what it is to be a part of a community of faith. As with any ministry which responds to personal need one of the real challenges is to make sure we connect with every person or situation. The coordinator of this ministry is Kay Lirely and I know she would appreciate your help in making sure we respond to each appropriate situation. Also if you would like to support this ministry by either knitting or crocheting a small blanket please contact Kay for more information. For me personally I look forward to each Sunday that I start a blanket around and witness the response of our congregation as we touch the lives of others through a blanket. Your servant in Christ, Larry A. Gilbert

The Beacon Page 3 MOMS Do you find yourself threatening, repeating your instructions, or raising your voice in an attempt to get your children to obey? Are you discouraged because it seems you just can't reach the heart of your child? Through personal experience and the practical application of Scripture, Ginger Plowman encourages and equips moms to reach past the outward behavior of their children and dive deeply into the issues of the heart. Ginger's candid approach will help moms move beyond the frustrations of not knowing how to handle issues of disobedience and into a confident, well-balanced approach to raising their children. Scarlett Pierson will lead the Don t Make Me Count to Three! and Wise Words for Moms both by Ginger Plowman. This class will meet every TWO weeks to allow busy moms time to participate. The Nursery will be available. Class begins Tuesday, January 24th at 6:30 and ends Tuesday, April 17th. Please contact Scarlett at 573-587-9106 or o_hara6@yahoo.com for more information. The sign-up sheet is at the north entrance of the church. Appreciation I wish to add my voice to those who have thanked this congregation for its generous friendship. You have been a blessing to me during these recent weeks, and we have together made a joyful noise unto the Lord. An editor has encouraged me to develop some of my notes about faith poetry, Christian poetry. So I will be very focused on that project during the next 3 or 4 months. Let s continue to pray that we find a regular, 52-Sunday-per-year organist. As I wrote in an earlier letter (to a limited audience), if you see someday an aging madwoman on the organ bench, a bat perched on each shoulder, her fingers curling into the keys, her feet marching to Zion over the pedals she may still be good for occasional music-duty as a substitute. I give thanks for our time together; it is a blessing to be with you. (Judy Little) Dear Members of the Congregation, It takes over one thousand people to make Spirit of Christmas work each year. Yet, here it is, the end of another Interfaith Council Spirit project, and thanks to your congregation s support, over 1000 gifts will be delivered in time for Christmas to the many less fortunate who reside within our communities. From the youngest of babes, to the very elderly, your generosity in time and money has assured that many of God s children will experience a better Christmas this year. Surely the willingness to come together, regardless of faith, and work for the goodness of humanity is God s gift to us this holiday season. Thanks to Him, we are indeed united as one. In His Service, Paula Lyle, Coordinator, 2011 Spirit of Christmas Project

The Beacon Page 4 The Library Corner: News from the UMC Library Are You Feeling Devotionally Challenged? Our spiritual selves, just like our physical bodies, need nourishment on a regular basis preferably daily! Daily prayer is our lifeline to God, but we may still find something is missing from our spiritual diet. What that something may be is the food for thought that we can get from reading some sort of daily devotions. Many people find that the Upper Room publication with its daily Bible verses and short meditations written by a variety of individuals helps give them different perspectives. Other people s spiritual insights and experiences encourage us to reflect on our own lives as well. If you d like to try the Upper Room, you will find copies of the magazine on the table at the back of the north sanctuary. We have both regular and large print copies, and each one covers two months of the year. Another way to nourish our faith lives is by using one of the many different devotional books that are published each year. Devotionals, like any other book, can vary widely in quality and in the amount of spiritual nourishment they provide. Try the Church Library it has a sampling of different devotionals, and it just may be that one of them will give you the spiritual food you need! Some devotionals will be on display on the Library table in the upstairs hall, and downstairs in the library. Sample titles for you to try: A Guide to Prayer for all God s People (daily Bible readings, reflections on the theme for the week, and invitations to pray and to write your thoughts in a journal) Miracles: a 52 week devotional Made for Each Other: Devotions for Newly Married Couples Faith for a Lifetime: Daily Inspiration for Women of Faith Experiencing God Day by Day Devotional Journal Do you have a favorite devotional that you d like to recommend to others? Let us know! We may be able to purchase a copy, or we may just list devotional recommendations so that others can look for their own copy. Tell Trina Eaton,, or Susan Patterson if you have something to recommend. Thank you! Meals on Wheels A big thank you to every one that has delivered Meals on Wheels. To the regulars who we can depend on every month and also to the ones that have filled in. It is greatly appreciated a great job well done. Joan Bastien We have a very dedicated and reliable couple that is retiring from delivering Meals on Wheels. We need someone that is willing to deliver Meals on Wheels on Thursdays. If interested call the church office at 687-2317 or Joan Bastien at 684-6005. A Time to Ponder New Year s Eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another 12 months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights. Hamilton Wright Mabie

The Beacon Page 5 On Sunday, December 18 th, the Chancel Choir treated Carl Herzog, choir director, and Min Yu Koh, accompanist, to a Christmas luncheon at Houlihan s. The lunch was also a farewell party for Min who graduated from SIU with her Master s Degree and is moving to Miami, Florida. Min has made her transition easy for us by recommending Hyun Ji Oh as the new accompanist. Luckily Carl, who will graduate in May, will be staying with us through the rest of the choir season. The choir has felt so blessed to have these two talented young people leading them. We will miss Min and wish her well. What My Church Means to Me What the church has meant to me is somewhat difficult to explain in simple words. It has always been a part of my life from my earliest existence to this present time, and has always been pointing The Way. Even the building holds a special place in my heart. When one needs a friend, a prayer just to feel the touch of a kindly hand or just to feel God s holy presence, the church is the place to go. To me, the church will never cease to be a teacher, a comforter, and a place of worship; a channel to God and family - all marching, marching to Zion-God s heavenly home. To me the church is a symbol of love, where Jesus, our Savior, with outstretched hands gave His life on the cross for All - and even me. By: Myrtle McKinnie (12-2-11)
