March 2014 Newsletter The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem Peace to you in the Name of the Lord Greetings from Bishop Suheil Dawani Dear Friends, We began the holy season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday service in Amman. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who visited Jordan earlier this month, preached on the importance of prayer, fasting and alms-giving the ancient disciplines of Lent in helping to restore our connectedness with God and with each other. Bishop Katharine s visit was indeed an important time of fellowship, which gave encouragement to our Diocesan parishes, schools and other institutions in Jordan. This month was also a time for meeting with our other Diocesan institutions, including St. Luke s Hospital in Nablus. These meetings emphasized to me the remarkable work that individuals throughout our communities are doing to help parishioners, students and patients. It is in this humble ministry of offering care and hope to those in need that our work reflects the true spirit of Lent. I give thanks for all those who work so hard in this Diocese to make a difference to those in need and thank you all for your continued support and faithful service in His name. Salaam, Peace + Suheil Dawani Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem www.j-diocese.org info@j-diocese.org Editor: The Rt. Rev d Bishop Suheil S. Dawani Page 1

Pilgrimages & Visits Southwell and Nottingham Curates Visit the Holy Land On 1 March, Bishop Suheil met with a group of Curates from the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham in England, who, as part of the important link between the two Dioceses, came to work in parishes throughout the Diocese of Jerusalem. Six women and four men, who have been ordained Priest in the last several years, spent ten days in seven parishes in the West Bank and Israel. The objective of the Curates visit was to experience something of the life of the church here, both in Israel and the West Bank, working with the Priests while in their parish. They wanted to have the opportunity to meet members of the congregation, experience the work in the parish and get involved in whatever way they could. It was clearly a very rich experience for both the Curates and the Priests in the Holy Land, where mutual understanding and sharing took place. The experiences varied a great deal from parish to parish, but for all it was an enriching time. It is hoped that this opportunity to bring Curates to the Holy Land in this way will be repeated bi-annually and will be seen as a mutually valuable time for both Dioceses. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori visits Jordan Bishop Suheil welcomed the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the USA, the Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts Schori, who visited Jordan from 2-8 March. During her week-long mission, the Presiding Bishop met with members of the Jordanian royal family, visited Diocesan churches and institutions, and delivered an address on women s empowerment. Further details on the Presiding Bishop s visit are provided in Diocesan News & Institutions and Parishes. Meeting with Philip Mounstephen, CMS Executive Leader On 13 March, Bishop Suheil met with Rev d Canon Philip Mounstephen, Executive Leader of the Church Mission Society (CMS) based in the United Kingdom. Rev. Mounstephen was accompanied by Mr. Tanas Alqassis, Regional Manager for Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The Church Mission Society is a voluntary society working with the Anglican Church and other Christians around the world. Sharing Perspectives Interfaith Course debuts at St. George s College From 21 27 March, St. George's College hosted an interfaith dialogue course entitled Sharing Perspectives: Muslims and Christians in the Holy Land. Thirteen people (seven Christians and six Muslims), primarily from the UK, attended the course, and lived together for a week as an interfaith community. The purpose of the course was to use the Holy Land as a means for interfaith dialogue, from which course members could take insights back home for use in their respective interfaith communities. This was done in at least three ways. First of all, course members visited the holy sites churches, mosques and various landscapes where they discussed ideas of holiness and the meaning of holy places, including whether holy places can be divided or shared. Secondly, various sessions, including one on Jesus Christ and the Prophet Muhammad, provided forums for theological engagement. The third component of the course was interaction with the local context of the Holy Land. Course highlights included a tour of the Princess Basma Center and a conversation with thirteen teenage students (Muslim and Christian) at St. George's School. A formal dinner discussion on the theme of 'Who is my Neighbour?' highlighted local female voices of Jerusalem, including Aminah Abu Sway and Tala Dawani. An evening dialogue with Bishop Suheil focused on the situation of Christians in the Holy Land, while highlighting the Diocese's commitment to Christian-Muslim relations, which was greatly appreciated by the Muslim course members. Indeed, the course concluded with the realization that Israel- Palestine is perhaps the best model of Christian-Muslim relations anywhere in the world. Sharing Perspectives was facilitated by Bishop Richard Cheetham (Kingston, UK) and Dr Mustafa Abu Sway (Jerusalem), along with college staff, the Rev Dr Graham Smith (Dean) and the Rev Rodney Aist, PhD (Course Director). The dates for next year's course are 19 26 March, 2015. Parishes Ash Wednesday Service Bishop Suheil presided at the Ash Wednesday service on 5 March at Jabal Amman Redeemer Church. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori gave a homily on the disciplines of Lent, of prayer, fasting and alms-giving, as acts of solidarity and justice. Following the service, a dinner was held in honour of the Presiding Bishop, Bishop Suheil and his wife Shafeeqa, where parishioners enjoyed a time of fellowship and interaction with visiting Bishop Katharine.
