Discussion Questions If at times we are dealing with souls determined to handle life without God, how might this notion influence the way we provide SoulCare? How can every psychological problem (excluding physiological problems) be a problem of the flesh? Following are the three scriptural supports for Crabb s three-legged stool model for spiritual direction. In your own words, summarize the three legs described in these passages: Proverbs 20:27 Psalm 73:23-24 1 John 2:26-27 In view of the Old Testament, the New Covenant, and Paul s example, what characteristics should a wise person have? To what extent do you exhibit each of these characteristics? If you feel called to become a spiritual director, Dr. Crabb suggests some steps to take in order to discover your calling. Which do you plan to pursue, if any? CC204 Course Study Guide 2015 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 4 11

Quiz 1. Dr. Crabb uses 1 John 2:26-27 to develop a vision of a spiritual community with spiritual direction. Based on this passage, he suggests Christians experience all of the following, except: A. God will speak to us from the center of our beings. B. We will not need anyone to teach us theology, because we have the Holy Spirit. C. We delight in God in the core of our being. D. When we fulfill the deepest desires of our hearts, we will obey God 2. That which Dr. Crabb calls psychological dynamics presumes which of the following? A. Innocence B. That there is no such thing as an innocent self C. A natural bent toward evil D. That there is no such thing as evil 3. What is the purpose of the three-legged stool Dr. Crabb describes? A. It is the model used to counsel someone who is dealing with soul hunger. B. It outlines the approach most effective spiritual directors use to counsel someone who has a psychological problem. C. It outlines the three-step process that every spiritual director must follow. D. It is the foundation on which we can build a model of spiritual direction. 4. How does Dr. Crabb define a spiritual director? A. Someone who provides wisdom to enter the darkest places in the human heart and to discover, to discern, and to encourage the release of the divine life within B. Someone who has been through the appropriate training and has gained a great enough level of experience to be able to guide people through dark nights of the soul C. Someone who has faced the same struggles in life as the person they are providing spiritual direction for, and, therefore, is able to now effectively walk that person through the journey D. None of the above 5. What does Dr. Crabb suggest Psalm 73:23-24 tells us? A. That we can rely on the experiences we have had in the past to wisely walk through our present experiences B. That wisdom comes from studying the Bible C. That we are always in God s presence and He will show us how we are to respond to difficult situations D. That everyone has relational problems CC204 Course Study Guide 2015 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 4 12

6. Where does Dr. Crabb believe we currently are, generally, in our churches? A. We are vibrant, thriving communities of like-minded individuals. B. We are groups of individuals who often struggle alone. C. We are doomed for failure. D. We are groups of wise, sacred companions. 7. Which of the following is one of the steps Dr. Crabb suggests taking if you are feeling called toward being a spiritual director? A. Begin to make a list of struggles you ve had and how you coped with them so you can share these experiences with those whom you will be directing. B. Find a good program in your area that will allow you to become certified. C. Meet with a few other people who share your sense of calling. 8. A wise person in the Old Testament: A. Listened to God, not the culture B. Spent time in the presence of God C. Knew God so well that wisdom came directly from God to them 9.
