The Revelation OF The Name

Transcription:

The name of God or the HaShem Deuteronomy 28:58-59 58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; 59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. The Hebrew word transliterated for name is Shem: a primitive word [perhaps rather from <H7760> (suwm) through the idea of definite and conspicuous position; compare <H8064> (shamayim)]; an appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, character :- + base, [in-] fame [-ous], name (-d), renown, report. Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary The Hebrew word transliterated for THE LORD is YHWH: from <H1961> (hayah); (the) self-existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God :- Jehovah, the Lord. Compare <H3050> (Yahh), <H3069> (Yehovih). Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary The name of God or the HaShem is what is known as the tetragrammaton or the transliteration of the four letters YHWH, or YHVH, or JHVH. Since the ancient Hebrew language that the scriptures were written in did not contain vowels and for fear of taking the Lord s name in vain, the Jewish people stopped speaking the name of the Lord out loud. And thus the actual pronunciation of God s name is no longer known. So when the Jewish people pray to the name of God or the HaShem they pronounce it as an expression using the word Adonai. Adonai meaning Lord of which is used to invoke the attribute of divine mercy. To ensure that the name of the LORD was not taken in vain by the Jewish people the Masoretes or Jewish scribes placed the vowel points for Adonai under the letters of the tetragrammaton. Thus when the Jewish people saw the name of God or the Hashem, which is the tetragrammaton with the vowel points under the letters for Adonai, they were reminded not to speak the name of God but rather to use the word Adonai in place of the name of God. Thus when the name of God or the HaShem is spoken in the English language we either say YaHWeH, YaHVeH, JeHoVaH, YeHoVaH, or YeHoWaH. And the vowel points that are used for this English pronunciation is taken from the Hebrew vowel points for Adonai. Remember that the Hebrew language has no separate letters for vowels. The pronunciation of the Hebrew words were dependent upon oral tradition or long established usage. You may be wondering how the Hebrew language today could exist if there were no vowel letters in their

alphabet, and after their Jewish temple was destroyed in AD 70 the Israelites were scattered abroad and thus the Hebrew language was not being spoken anymore? The answer is the scribes realizing that the Hebrew language was being lost came up with a system of vowel pointers that allowed them to record the vowel sounds without altering the original Hebrew text by placing these vowel pointers above and below the letters in the text. So have you ever wondered why in the Old Testament the English word Lord is written as LORD with each letter capitalized? The answer for this is that the translators followed after the Jewish tradition of not speaking God s name out loud and thus also used the word Lord which was translated from Adonai. So that the reader would be aware of this they chose to capitalize each letter of the word LORD. When in reality the word LORD should be translated as Jehovah of which comes from the adding of the vowel points of Adonai to the tetragrammaton. So when we read the verse, I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images, (Isaiah 42:8) you are suppose to recognize from the all capitalized letters that the word LORD is not his name but rather a pointer to his name which is YHWH or our English translation Jehovah. So in reality this verse reads Jehovah: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. This use of the word LORD in place of Jehovah takes place over 6500 times in the Old Testament. Again, the reason for the loss of the pronunciation of the name of God or the Hashem was do in part to the following verses of scripture which in turn caused the Jewish people to stop speaking the name of God, and since the Hebrew alphabet only includes consonants and no vowels the correct pronunciation was lost. Exodus 20:7 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Leviticus 24:16 16 And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to death. However the Jewish people believe that when their Messiah comes they will achieve a state of perfection and at that time they will pronounce the name of God or the HaShem. Zechariah 14:9 9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one. But the Messiah already came!!! And his name is Jesus!!! Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (Matthew 28:18) I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. (Isaiah 43:11)

So when we hear names like Jehovah-jireh, we must remember that the name of God or the HaShem is always linked to what he is doing for his people within their covenant relationship. In the case of Jehovah-jireh we see that it is Abraham that give to Jehovah this name. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. (Genesis 22:13-14) However Jesus is our provider today! We must not forget that Jesus is our all in all! He is our everything!! And from this point forward this will be shown to you. Jehovah-Jireh, the LORD will Provide. Genesis 22:8, 14 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (John 1:29) But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. (Hebrews 10:12-14) Jehovah-Rapha, the LORD that Healeth thee. Exodus 15:26 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5) And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. (Matthew 8:14-17) Jehovah-Nissi, the LORD is our Banner (victory). Exodus 17:15 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (Genesis 3:15) Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:14-17) But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57) For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4-5) Jehovah-M'Kaddesh, the LORD our Sanctifier. Exodus 31:13, Leviticus. 20:8

Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (Hebrews 10:8-10) Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh. (Hebrews 10:19-20) Jehovah-Shalom, the LORD our Peace. Judges 6:23-24 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. (Ephesians 2:13-18) Jehovah-Raah, the LORD is my Shepherd. Psalms 23:1 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. (1 Peter 2:21-25) Jehovah-Tsidkenu, the LORD is our Righteousness. Jeremiah 23:6 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (2 Corinthians 5:19-21) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Romans 8:1-4) Jehovah-Shammah, the LORD is There (ever present). Ezekiel 48:35

Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell. (Colossians 1:14-19) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:20) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. (John 14:16-18) El Shaddai, The Almighty God. Genesis 17:1 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:8) El Elyon, The most high God. Genesis 14:18 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. (Ephesians 1:19-23) By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. (Hebrews 7:22-26) El Olam, The everlasting God. Genesis 21:33 Jesus Christ fulfils this for us today - But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. (Micah 5:2) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4) I am he that

liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. (Revelation 1:18) Therefore we the people of the New Testament are doing an injustice to God when we do not do all things in the name of Jesus. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (Colossians 3:17) This includes the singing of songs as well as to water baptism. Jesus, God manifested in the flesh, fulfilled all of the attributes of God as he is both fully man and fully God and therefore we are to do all things in Jesus name which is giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:19-20) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38) Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) (Acts 8:15-16) And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. (Acts 10:48) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 19:5)
