School Newsletter January 28, 2019 Walk with God, Talk with God! St. Paul s Lutheran School exists to assist the congregation and community by partnering with parents for the gospel growth of children spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically all through the Life-saving gospel of Jesus Christ. General: GEO BEE: Congrats to our 10 finalists from grades 5-8 this week in our school competition for the National Geographic Bee! They will get to battle one question at a time for the honor of school champion this Tuesday: Carter, Easton, Sam, Kanyon, Natalie, Keller, Judah, Ethan M., Logan S., Trinity. Call Declined: Dear friends: I wanted to let you know that I have turned down the recent call I had received to teach in Sparta, WI. I look forward to my continued work of serving with an amazing faculty and supportive families here in Norfolk! Thank you so much for those who chatted with me about the decision. It is always a challenging time for me and my family when from out of nowhere you have the responsibility to make a potential life-changing decision. Your input was very valuable! Little Lambs Registration: If you have signed up for 2019-20, please get your registration packet to the school office at your earliest convenience. Thank you! Daddy-Daughter Dance: Mark your calendars for our Daddy-Daughter Dance on Sunday, February 10 th from 4:00-5:30pm for all girls Preschool-4 th grade. Please RSVP to the school office by February 7 th. Science & Arts Fair: The Science & Arts Fair will be held at NELHS on Saturday, March 16 th. This event gives our students an opportunity to use their gifts in the area of art, music, science, and so much more! More information will be coming home later this week. Lutheran Schools Week: We will be celebrating Lutheran Schools week February 18-22. Look for a flyer coming home with information about the weeks festivities!

PSG: Our meeting will be scheduled for this Wednesday, January 30 th at 5:30 pm. Play Night: School Play Night is still a long way off, but we wanted to set the date for Friday, April 26 th. It was decided that this area was ripe for mission work, so missionaries were sent to the Apache in what was then the territory of the Arizona. This semester we are giving our Wednesday chapel offerings to continue to help spread the great news of our Savior. Amount collected: $ 54.90 ----------- Total amount collected this semester: $146.61

Sunday Worship Attendance This Week: K = 7 / 10 1 = 8 / 10 2 = 10 / 12 3 & 4 = 15 / 19 5 & 6 = 11 / 17 7 & 8 = 7 / 15 -------------------------------- TOTAL: 50 / 83 (70%) ==================================================================================== Mrs. Mullen's Room (Preschool) MWF Morning/Afternoon Class We will learn of the first miracle this week! The children really enjoy these stories, it makes us feel so pumped when we realize there is no one bigger than our GOD! This group of kids will talk about writing stories and the parts of a story. Also our manners unit continues with great practice happening every day! Tue/Thur Class We will find out how Jesus decided who his helpers would be. This lesson teaches us that we must put others before ourselves if we want to do what is right. The children will be watching for friends who need prayers this week, and we will pick a prayer partner to pray for. All of the classes will attempt to meet people around school and introduce themselves. Shaking hands, eye contact, and so much more! We will be talking about groundhogs as the big day approaches this Saturday. Will he see his shadow for the 3rd year in a row?? Calendars for February come home today! Have a wonderful week walking with Jesus, Mrs. Mullen Mrs. Paulsen's Room (Kindergarten) SUPERKIDS: This week, we will finish learning the letter Rr. We will also start our next unit. This unit will focus on the letter Nn. We will also be spending time this week working on distinguishing between d and b because this is a challenge for children. A great distinction between the two is where you start the letter when you write it. If you spend time writing at home, ask your child to show you the difference. CHRIST LIGHT: We will be learning two Bible stories again this week. Jesus Changes Water into Wine and Jesus and the Paralyzed Man. In both of these stories we see how He provided for His people on earth in miraculous ways. Bible Verse: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7 Hymn of the Week: CWS 754 The Tree of Life MATH: Last week we introduced the card game war. It is a great game to practice number recognition. We will continue playing that this week and have a lot of discussion and fun with the number 100. Monday is the 100 th day of school! We are so excited! THEMES: This week we will be talking about light and shadows. This weekend is groundhogs day and that will be one of the things we talk about. We will also get the projector in our classroom and experiment with that and different objects and lights.

MORE: As many of you have seen, we are having Parent/Teacher conferences next week. There is a sign up sheet outside my classroom and I will send out a sign up genius. Please reserve a spot in one way or another. Conferences are a great way to catch up and get an update on your child! January Bookit!s will be due on Friday. I will be sending home new calendars that day as well. Thank you for putting in your January book orders. School gets free books when you order. I will be sending home a February order form this week. It will be due February 15 th. Thank you to those who came to sing on Sunday. The children sounded great! God s blessings on your week! Happy almost February! Mrs.Paulsen Mrs. Spreeman (Grade 1) Happy Monday and Happy 100th Day!! Zero the Hero blew in for the day to celebrate. It s his favorite day of the year. :). I hope you had fun making the 100 day displays. It s fun to see if 100 seems like a lot, or not. Thank you to those that could be there to sing yesterday. You all sang so well. What a great reminder for everyone that God is our Good Shepherd. This week we will work more with adding super-e to words to make the vowels say the long sound, add s to words to make them plural, learn doubles plus one math facts, and keep tracking the weather with our line graph. It s interesting to see the effect the wind has on the temperature. Our mitten building experiment was fun and a great learning activity. Ask your child how his/her mitten turned out. Some children are going to try wearing their mitten out to recess. Our Bible lessons this week will teach us that God freely gives us salvation, and that we thank God for that by freely giving gifts to him. HOMEWORK MONDAY: read lesson 12B The Parable of the Vineyard Workers / wksht / memory Ephesians 2:8,9. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. TUESDAY: Supershort and spelling wksht WEDNESDAY: Read Superkid story and wksht. THURSDAY: read lesson 13B The Widow s Offering / wksht / memory 2 Corinthians 9:7b God loves a cheerful giver Caleb will turn 71/2 on Friday! Happy Half Birthday, Caleb! Caleb will also be our tea party host on Friday. Please bring a poem to share with the class. Keep working on BookIt! goals. If you ve reached the January goals you can bring your sheet in this week. February goals and February book orders will be coming home later this week. Next week we will get together for parent teacher conferences. Watch for a sign-up sheet in your child s folder. This week in Christlight we will hear The Parable of the Rich Man and Poor Lazarus and The Rich Young Man. In these lessons Jesus teaches lesson on the danger of possessions.

In Language Arts we will be talking about possessive nouns, oo and ue words, reading Dear Mr. Blueberry and making inferences. Some of our students will have their work on display there. Stop by and enjoy some creativity. Daddy/daughter dance: Sunday, February 10th from 4:00-5:30. It will be a wonderful, magical time! :) Conferences: Please look for a sheet coming home on Tuesday for signing up. Christ Light: This week our lessons are Mary and Martha & The parable of the great banquet. Last week we heard how Jesus healed 10 men of leprosy. Ask us how many came back to say "thank you". Memory for Tuesday is the 3rd commandment (we've already done it a few times), while Friday's memory is Psalm 119:105. Spelling: Unit 20. Pages 132-133 are due on Wednesday; pages 134-135 are due on Friday. Math: 3rd will be learning to write numbers to 1,000 using words, as well as, adding and subtracting multiples of 100. 4th grade continues to work more and more with fractions. Science: Our next unit is on fossils. **Later this week we will be getting some more information about the science project for the Science and Art Fair in March. Language: We finished our unit on writing compare and contrast essays. Do you notice that writing is flowing more easily? We will be working more with plural verbs--some are irregular. Ask us what that means. Reading (3/4): We are wrapping up our play, Red Writing Hood. Our test is scheduled for Thursday. **We will be taking some time to practice for our performance on Wednesday, Feb. 13th (starting around 1:30). BOOK REPORTS: Our author letters are due on Tuesday, February 5th. AR: How are our points coming along? These last two quarters, AR will be a grade on the report card. (20 points is a B; 25 is an A.) Reading (5/6): We are done reading the play, Anne of Green Gables. Our test is scheduled for Thursday. **We are hoping to make biscuits on Friday--it ties in with the story. Art (3-6): Norfolk Daily News hosts Design and Ad for local businesses. We will be creating an ad for a business we like. Senior Art (7/8): Our drawing unit is starting. We will learn more about portraits, still-lifes, and Pop Art. **We are also working on art journals this semester.

Creative Writing (7/8): Our new assignment is to finish the ending to a story that I'll read aloud. "If God is who for us, who can be against us?" Romans 8:31 Mr. Brown's Classes (Grades 5 & 6) 5-6 ChristLight Our stories for this week are Mary Honors Jesus and Jesus Rides into Jerusalem. The overall theme the students will focus on is: Jesus is the King, who came to give his life for us. This same Jesus from children s Bible stories is also our Savior and King. We too can honor him as our King by singing songs of praise and worshiping him with our gifts of money and service. ****Memory Treasures: Mark 10:45 2 Corinthians 8:9 5-6 Spelling This week students are working on LESSON 21. 5-6 Social Studies We will be finishing our first decade of the 20 th Century, The 00 s, this week. Students continue working on their 20 th Century pictorial booklets as well. Our next decade will focus mostly on WWI. 7-8 U.S. History 7 th graders are on their way to learning the President s Song. In class we are finishing learning about Washington s and Adams presidencies. Also this week we will learn what happened in our country under the helm of President Thomas Jefferson, and they will also be starting a history project of their choice. 3-4 Social Studies We are currently learning how important local government is and will soon be discussing our national government. 5-6 Music We are taking a break from hand chimes and will be starting something new. Our new unit is about musical instruments in the orchestra: percussion, brass, woodwinds, and strings. 7-8 Music This week we finish our studies of American composers and begin learning about one family of instruments more depth: percussion. Together in Christ, Mr. Brown Mr. Paulsen s Classes (Grades 7 & 8) Religion: Our reflections are finishing up and we will be starting a new unit this week on the Prophets of the Old Testament. Reading: Paul Fischer is battling against his former school and finding out more and more just how strange Tangerine County can be. Math: We are working with multiple concepts involving plotting data in a variety of ways. English: We are continuing our study of parts of speech: this week we continue our work with adverbs.
