Church Life It s increasingly common for Christians to ask one another the tough questions: How is your marriage? Have you been spending time in the Word? How are you doing in terms of sexual purity? Have you been sharing your faith? But how often do we ask, How much are you giving to the Lord? or Have you been robbing God? or Are you winning the battle against materialism? When it comes to giving, churches operate under a don t ask, don t tell policy. We lack communication, accountability, and modeling. It s as if we have an unspoken agreement: I won t talk about it if you won t, so we can go right on living as we are. Think about it. How does a young Christian in the church learn to give? Where can he go to see what giving looks like in the life of a believer captivated by Christ? Why are we surprised when, seeing no other example, he takes his cues from a materialistic society? We re to consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24). Shouldn t we then be asking how we can spur one another on toward giving? From The Treasure Principle Connect Church 2018 Israel Tour is now filled. Please pray for this tour group as they prepare for this upcoming fall trip. God s Word - Time With God Today s SOAP - Elder Clayton Hutcheson Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:9-12; 6:12-19 David became king of Israel at the age of thirty and reigned forty years. Early in his reign he defeated the Philistines twice, conquered the Jebusites and took Jerusalem. Hiram king of Tyre built David a palace in Jerusalem. David took thirty thousand young men and went to Baalah in Judah to bring the arc of God to Jerusalem. In transporting the arc, at one point it looked as if the arc would fall from the cart. Uzzah reached out and touched it while steading it. God struck him dead for touching it. David was afraid of God at that point and took the arc to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite, instead of Jerusalem. God blessed that house. David saw those blessings and moved the arc to a tent in Jerusalem he had specifically prepared. There was a great celebration, sacrifices to God, and David blessed the people in the name of Almighty God. Observation: God blessed David in several ways, but at the center of all these blessings was David being faithful and obedient to God. When all was said and done the blessings provided a great opportunity to celebrate what God had done for David and the nation of Israel. Application: God blesses those who are obedient to him. It is disrespectful of God when we fail to give God the glory for what he does in our lives. God was blessing the nation of Israel and its people. They had a reason to celebrate and David led the celebration. We cheat those who do not know God when we fail to celebrate and give him the glory for the blessings in our lives. Prayer: Dear God may I never fail to give you thanks for the blessings in my life. In doing so may I have opportunities to tell others how they can have a blessed life through accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Amen. How Do I SOAP? Scripture - Read the passage of Scripture for the day and allow God to speak to you. Write down a verse which spoke to you. Observation - Write your observation as to what is happening in the text. What do you believe is the point of the passage? Application - Write down how the Scripture passage applies to your life today. Prayer - Ask God to help you use this Scripture for greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say! Now, write it out. S.O.A.P. Scripture Observation Application Prayer Grab your Bible, a pen, and a notebook. Get ready to hear from God through His Word! Celebrated Scripture 9 David took up residence in the stronghold, which he named the city of David. He built it up all the way around from the supporting terraces inward. 10 David became more and more powerful, and the Lord God of Armies was with him. 11 King Hiram of Tyre sent envoys to David; he also sent cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. 12 Then David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel. 12 It was reported to King David: The Lord has blessed Obed-edom s family and all that belongs to him because of the ark of God. So David went and had the ark of God brought up from Obed-edom s house to the city of David with rejoicing. 13 When those carrying the ark of the Lord advanced six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened calf. 14 David was dancing with all his might before the Lord wearing a linen ephod. 15 He and the whole house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of the ram s horn. 16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the city of David, Saul s daughter Michal looked down from the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. 17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings in the Lord s presence. 18 When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of Armies. 19 Then he distributed a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake to each one in the entire Israelite community, both men and women. Then all the people went home. 2 Samuel 5:9-12; 6:12-19 CSB Main Point God s work and presence are to be celebrated by His people.
