ST. MARY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Dear Parishioners: On Tuesday of this week, the Catholic Church in Cleveland received the marvelous news of the naming of the next Ordinary Bishop of Cleveland, Bishop Nelson J. Perez. Two full pages of this issue are dedicated to providing us with a visual and narrative portrait of our new bishop. I will simply add here that, in conversation with a brother priest, Fr. Bill Thaden, who had the opportunity to concelebrate Mass and share lunch with Bishop Perez on Tuesday, my initial enthusiasm was only increased, as Fr. Bill described an individual with a very personable and joyful demeanor. I imagine that more than a couple of us have been wondering: How long is the work on the exterior of the church building going to continue? While we cannot give an exact concluding date, I can assure you that the crew has been putting in full days we even had a workman here on July 4. We are optimistic that this tuck-pointing of the masonry will stem the deterioration of plaster that is very evident especially in the stairwell leading up to the balcony. Thank you for your patience! Let us continue to pray for the safety of the crewman, and in thanksgiving for their skill. Speaking of work, as is the case each and every summer, our maintenance crew has been hard at it in these days. Beyond the routine daily work, major tasks they are tackling include: painting and comprehensive cleaning of school rooms, completion of an expanded youth space on the upper floor of the chiropractic building, and preserving several architectural treasures in the Bowman Street house prior to demolition (which needs to take place before the start of school). By the way, Habitat for Humanity is going to be able to harvest a tremendous portion of the structure of this building, for repurposing! Please take the opportunity to thank our maintenance staff, when you see them! For several years, men of our parish have been interested in bringing to St. Mary, an initiative called That Man Is You. From the program s website: That Man is You! honestly addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The program harmonizes current social and medical science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints to develop the vision of man fully alive! Fundamentally, as a parish we want actively to support men in their walk with Christ, so that he can be the center of their lives and their vocations. Please pray for this effort during its planting phase. In balance, women of the parish are encouraged to watch for imminent news regarding a fall retreat for ladies. Their team has been in formation for months not just planning but praying actively that sisters in Christ will respond to the invitation to go deeper in relationship with Christ! I believe the graduation party season is winding down! Next weekend, I will be joining my family in celebration of my niece s high school graduation. Kaitlyn was able to travel to Wooster, to celebrate the jubilee. Her commencement was held in June, but Saturday s party will allow more family to gather together. Finally, along with welcoming all visitors to the parish, it is wonderful once again to have several young adults involved in the Ohio Light Opera joining us regularly for Mass!
